Cook felt increasingly desperate, fully aware that the vice president was right.
But what did it matter? Even if their products were far inferior to the Virtual Helmet, they still couldn't produce anything.
Apple's internal technological accumulation was still formidable, far exceeding everyone's imagination. If it came down to a life-or-death situation, they could still manage to create a super smartphone that surpassed their global competitors.
However, before Apple could apply these technological advancements to the next generation of products, they had already become outdated. The patents piled up in Apple's patent library had thoroughly turned into worthless scraps of paper.
"What about Google? Do they have this technology?" Cook suddenly recalled his fellow struggles in Silicon Valley.
Despite the fierce competition with Android, Apple and Google had secretly colluded quite a bit. At least regarding the S System, Apple's appropriation of Android patents had been exposed countless times. If it weren't for Google's covert patent permissions, Apple wouldn't dare to be so audacious.
Even with Apple's pride, they had to admit that in this rapidly changing technological era, the S System had already lost its competitive edge.
The most advanced Android System had long surpassed the S System. However, since the United States did not allow High-End Android to be licensed to other countries, Apple's System could still thrive.
In fact, every time Android and Apple competed, it was an unfair match. The Android camp would feel aggrieved, realizing that they were always competing with Apple from a disadvantageous position. Their predecessor, Next-Generation Android, was tightly controlled by Google and not authorized for them.
When Apple updated their System and made another upgrade, Google finally showed some goodwill by providing the next-generation Android upgrade. But compared to Apple's latest version, Android still lagged behind significantly.
Google's manipulation of global manufacturers forced many mobile phone manufacturers to rise up and develop their own Systems based on open-source code.
Being choked by others on the System front, these manufacturers were not made of clay; everyone has their limits.
Thus, various Android variant Systems began to emerge on the world stage. Google soon realized something was amiss and started licensing their top-tier Systems to them. However, having learned from past mistakes, they could no longer expect these manufacturers to abandon their hard-earned Systems just to suffer another loss.
So now while Apple's System dominated the market, various domestic Android variant Systems were also highly anticipated. Android belonged to Google, but these Systems merely utilized open-source code to create their own versions. Therefore, any claims that all Android Systems belonged to Google were utterly ridiculous.
In reality, only the native Android System truly belonged to Google. As for the open-source variants like Mi and Huawei's Systems—sorry, those are theirs!
The collusion between Apple and Google extended beyond just the System aspect. Numerous examples could be found in various fields where both companies conspired against the world.
This also led to the realization that Apple could not produce a substitute for the Virtual Helmet, and the first thought was of their neighbor, Google.
The vice president shook his head. "Google doesn't have that kind of technology either. Their most advanced virtual technology is merely an enhancement of existing VR products on the market; it simply cannot achieve this effect."
"What should we do then? Just sit and wait for our demise?" Cook asked, frowning.
The vice president shook his head again and explained, "Sir, Google has proposed a highly feasible plan. They want to lead a coalition with Qualcomm, Intel, Microsoft, and us, pooling our respective technological expertise to create a commercially viable virtual device."
"Nonsense! Are they expecting to get our decades of technological accumulation for free?" Cook erupted in anger.
This proposal was indeed as feasible as the vice president had suggested. The technological prowess of the major players in Silicon Valley could undoubtedly change the world. Even if they couldn't create a product as perfect as the Virtual Helmet, producing an inferior version would still be possible.
However, there was one glaring issue: who would be foolish enough to share their decades of technological accumulation for free?
Unreservedly, that technological foundation was Apple's cornerstone in the world. Even if they managed to create this device, without that foundation, how could Apple maintain its standing globally?
Even if their market value plummeted now, Apple could still survive. Even if their products failed to sell later on, with their technological accumulation, there might still be a chance for revival. But if they foolishly shared their technology like this, Apple would inevitably face destruction.
Without technology, Apple would truly only be able to sell nostalgia.
The vice president nodded, finding Cook's reaction unsurprising.
"Yes, sir. The other companies have also rejected Google's proposal."
"Not rejecting it would be foolish. This is just a temporary crisis; it's not yet time to fight desperately," Cook said dismissively.
Unexpectedly, the vice president dropped another bombshell: "But sir, Google has submitted this proposal to Mr. President. It seems Mr. President is quite optimistic about this coalition of Silicon Valley powers aiming to seize control over the Virtual Era and may push for its implementation."
"Damn! What are these politicians thinking?" Cook was rarely this angry.
Typically known for his polished demeanor, Cook felt an unprecedented surge of fury for the first time.
"Damn that guy, why is he trying to be president instead of focusing on his real estate? He must have taken some dirty money from Google. He must be out of his mind to pass this bill."
The Vice President ignored Cook's words. There were some things Cook could rant about, but he couldn't. He was a smart man, knowing that some things were better left unsaid; leaking them would only bring him trouble.
After a while of cursing, Cook seemed to have lost his energy. He regained his usual determination and said with enthusiasm, "Gather the tech department staff; I need to hold a general meeting. By the way, issue a statement that Apple, with its decades of heritage, will never fall behind in the Virtual Era. Look forward to our next product!"
The Vice President was taken aback and curiously asked, "Sir, are we going to reveal information about the next product? We just held the Autumn Launch Event not long ago..."
"Let's forget about the Autumn Launch Event," Cook sighed deeply.
The Autumn Launch Event had catapulted Apple's notch screen iPhone into fame. Those days were among the best times for Apple. It was hard to imagine that just a month after the iPhone's hot sales, they faced a life-threatening crisis.
Was it Nokia or Motorola that last faced such a situation? Cook couldn't quite remember...
