Although the name had changed, the way of addressing remained the same, so Jufeng quickly caught on and transformed into a sycophantic figure.
“Boss, I am Ju Feng.”
Jufeng wore a sly smile as he handed over a pack of cigarettes, not particularly expensive, but it was the Interviewer's favorite brand.
Seeing that Jufeng was quite considerate, the Interviewer took the cigarettes without a word and tucked them into his pocket, then smiled and said, “Hmm! You look strong enough to handle the work in Mining. You’re hired.”
Jufeng thanked him repeatedly but did not leave immediately. Instead, he pulled out another pack of cigarettes from his pocket and leaned in closer to whisper in the Interviewer's ear, “Boss, you see my wife here? She’s built for hard labor and can hold her own against any man. Heh heh, things are tight at home right now, and it’s tough finding work in these chaotic times. What do you think...”
Jufeng deliberately elongated his words to give the officer less time to think. The officer hesitated upon realizing it was a woman, but he was reluctant to return the cigarettes.
After pondering for a moment, the Interviewer stuffed the second pack into his pocket as well and patted Jufeng on the shoulder, saying, “No problem, you both are hired. You probably want to bring your wife along to avoid feeling lonely at night!”
Others present during the interview chuckled in agreement, and Jufeng laughed along heartily. However, no one noticed the fleeting glint of coldness in his eyes.
For Hua Cheng and his companions, their interviews were much simpler; being former soldiers meant they didn’t need to prove their strength for Mining work.
After the first round of interviews came the second round of identity verification, which posed no concern given the powerful capabilities of the Cosmic Police.
The final interview was with Yang Fang, which essentially involved casual conversation followed by signing contracts and assigning locations. He assigned Jufeng and his group to an area under a Terrorist leader to facilitate their work.
After some time spent on checks, it was nearly noon when Jufeng's group finally passed. They organized their belongings according to their assigned rooms and began work after lunch.
The vast mine stretched far and wide, meaning everyone worked in different areas. After changing into their work clothes, Jufeng and Vera arrived at their designated spot where six people were stationed to supervise. From their stances and demeanor while speaking, it was easy to identify who was in charge.
Since it was their first meeting, if Jufeng rushed in with flattery right away, it would come off as too obvious and raise suspicion. Therefore, he needed to create an opportunity for himself to catch the attention of the leader named Li Kang.
Of course, all of this would take place later.
In the following days, Jufeng and Vera went about their tasks methodically while also observing Li Kang’s temperament and daily habits—everything from how often he used the restroom to how many times he inspected the mine and at what times. In truth, everyone has habits; with careful observation, one can always find patterns.
Three nights after entering the mine, Jufeng and Vera returned to their dormitory to rest. For someone skilled in martial arts, mining was not a significant challenge, but it was still somewhat unusual. Romain could tell that Vera was slightly out of her element.
Perhaps it was because she had endured hardships before; she had always been hands-on and unafraid of hard work. However, after being the leader of the Blazing Axe for so many years, having not lifted a finger for a decade, suddenly being thrust into such heavy labor would evoke sympathy from anyone who saw her.
Especially for someone as remarkable as her.
After returning to her room and taking a shower, Vera lay down fully clothed, which had become her sleeping habit since they began "cohabitating."
Romain also took a shower. As he looked at Vera's back lying on the bed, he felt an inexplicable flutter in his heart.
He gently sat on the edge of the bed and reached out to touch Vera's delicate fair skin on her foot, the only part of her body untouched by the dark color of the mine.
Vera sensed Romain's movement and was about to turn away to escape when she suddenly realized that her body was immobile. This realization sent waves of panic surging through her.
Once she felt Romain's actions, she managed to calm down a bit, though her cheeks still flushed with embarrassment, hidden beneath her dark skin and hard to detect. She couldn't tell if it was due to shyness or anger.
Romain placed one of her feet on his lap and bent his fingers, pressing on the acupoints on the sole of her foot with his knuckles. With a hint of helplessness, he said, "Why do you put yourself through this? You might as well stay on Earth comfortably as the leader of the Blazing Axe, living in luxury."
With Romain controlling her body in an unknown manner, Vera could neither move nor speak. She decided to close her eyes, hoping that what she couldn't see wouldn't trouble her.
However, the rhythmic pressure continued to invade her heart, and Romain's voice filled the room, impossible for her to ignore or evade.
Romain continued speaking without concern for himself: "A woman should take good care of herself and look beautiful every day so that a man can cherish her in his palm and love her freely. That way, life is not wasted..."
His voice suddenly turned into a lullaby. Vera tried to muster her strength to stay awake but found that once she closed her eyes, she no longer wished to open them. The sensations beneath her were increasingly soothing—slightly warm and then suddenly cool—overall very comfortable, making her truly want to sleep.
Romain spoke for an unknown length of time that night; Vera didn't know because she quickly drifted off into a deep slumber. The only thing she could confirm upon waking was that her body felt relaxed and free from the slight soreness it had before.
After getting up and going about their usual work, Romain did not mention what had happened the night before, and naturally, Vera did not bring it up either. However, regarding serious matters, Romain had made some plans.
"This afternoon, I plan to take action."
At the breakfast table, Ning Pangzi suddenly raised his head at the words, looking serious as he quietly said, "Brother Jufeng, but we haven't had a chance to inform Brother Hua and the others yet."
Jufeng shot Ning Pangzi a glance, feeling a bit helpless as he replied, "It's not like we're going to kill someone. What do we need to tell them for? This afternoon, I will create an opportunity to get close to Li Kang. When the time comes, don't be nervous and cooperate with me, got it?"
Ning Pangzi nodded, somewhat understanding. Jufeng glanced at Vera, feeling reassured.
The morning passed quietly, and by afternoon, Jufeng kept checking the time. At three o'clock, Li Kang would come to inspect the mine as usual, and that would be Jufeng's moment to act.
As the time drew closer, Jufeng observed the preparations he had made in the mine and confirmed everything was in order. He perked up his ears to listen. Before long, footsteps could be heard from outside the mine; Jufeng knew that Li Kang had finally arrived.
