The sound of footsteps grew closer, and moments later, a figure appeared—it was Yang Fang, accompanied by two lackeys.
Due to the routine inspections that occurred regularly, everyone had grown accustomed to it and no longer stopped to avoid reprimands as they had at the beginning.
Jufeng discreetly signaled Ning Xin, who understood the cue. With a slight nod of her round head, she subtly moved two steps toward the exit of the mine.
At that moment, Yang Fang was deep inside, conducting his inspection, while his two lackeys remained behind him.
The timing was perfect!
The mine was dimly lit. Vera went through her usual motions, driving her automatic pickaxe into the rock wall beside her. Based on countless past experiences, nothing unusual should happen. However, today was different.
Jufeng had been planning for a long time and was already confident in his strategy. He had set traps throughout the mine during the mining process; the rock wall was no longer solid and secure. The spot where Vera struck was precisely the trigger point for the entire Web of Protection. If Vera exerted more than double her usual strength, the trap would activate.
Thus, just one second after Vera made her strike, the ground began to tremble.
This is bad; it's going to collapse! This was everyone's first reaction. Driven by an instinctual desire for survival, they bolted toward the exit of the mine like wild horses breaking free.
The workers already near the edge of the mine naturally took advantage of their position and escaped first. However, those trapped deeper inside faced a grim situation. Ahead of them stood obstacles, with no way out.
Yang Fang was among them.
The earth shook, rocks fell, and dust filled the air. Yang Fang's two subordinates remained somewhat loyal; instead of fleeing immediately, they ventured deeper to find Yang Fang. But unexpectedly, they encountered a large figure blocking their path—a hefty body squeezed them out. In this precarious moment, driven by their will to survive, all they could do was stomp their feet in frustration.
Amidst the chaos, Jufeng seized Vera's arm and flung her away. Naturally, it wasn't too forceful; she landed safely. However, just a few seconds later, the trembling mine was on the verge of collapse. Finally, one last tremor became the final straw that broke the camel's back—there was a deafening roar as the mine caved in.
Just a second before, Yang Fang was trapped beneath the impending collapse, unable to move as the shaking ground and the pushing crowd jostled him. At that critical moment, a figure suddenly lunged forward, pulling Yang Fang into the mine and plunging them both into darkness.
Lying on the ground, amidst the roaring noise and flying debris, Jufeng and Yang Fang fell into a brief unconsciousness. Time passed—how long, they could not tell—until everything faded away, returning to calmness, and the earth became gentle once more.
Yang Fang found himself beneath Jufeng, serving as an uncomfortable cushion in the dark void where time seemed to stand still. Slowly, he began to regain consciousness.
As he awoke, he struggled to open his eyes, but it felt as if he had not opened them at all. The world he saw with his eyes open was the same color as the space he had seen with them closed. After several attempts, confirming that he was indeed alive and his eyes were open, he began to slowly piece together his memories.
He realized he had been unfortunate enough to be caught in a mine collapse. Although Interstellar Space had made rapid technological advancements over the past two hundred years, some dangers could only be mitigated but never entirely eliminated.
In that moment before the collapse, it felt as if he had one foot in the realm of the dead when someone had lunged at him and saved his life.
With this thought, Yang Fang gradually became aware of his surroundings and confirmed that a young man was pressing down on him—likely the same person who had acted heroically moments before.
Yang Fang attempted to sit up and wake Jufeng, but as soon as he focused his mind on moving, excruciating pain shot through his limbs. The force of that earlier impact must have been quite severe.
Little did he know that Jufeng had intentionally rewarded him for his efforts. Supervising was exhausting; it was better to rest for a while.
Moments later, Jufeng finally regained consciousness. He stirred slightly on top of Yang Fang, seemingly dazed as he tried to recall what had just happened. Suddenly, Yang Fang's voice broke through from beneath him, startling Jufeng.
"Brother, be careful moving; there's someone under you!"
Hearing this, Jufeng quickly scrambled off Yang Fang, appearing to regain clarity. He then anxiously asked, "You’re Supervisor Yang, right? I’m so sorry! I just woke up and feel a bit dizzy. Are you... okay?"
In the darkness, Jufeng could only speak in a general direction. Yang Fang bitterly smiled at the words, thinking to himself, "Damn it, my luck is really terrible. I just arrived here for a few minutes, and it collapses right when I show up. Is this fate just messing with me?"
Cursing inwardly did no good, and since Jufeng had saved his life, Yang Fang naturally spoke kindly to him.
"I'm fine; I just seemed to hit a rock when I fell over earlier and can't move much. Come over and help me sit up."
Jufeng responded with an "Oh," fully embodying his role as he felt around in the dark until he found Yang Fang's body and gently helped him sit up.
It had been a while since the collapse, and the sounds in the mine gradually shifted from rustling to noisy commotion. The miners trapped with them were slowly waking up, and soon complaints and cries filled the air.
Jufeng helped Yang Fang lean against the wall before moving away to search around the mine. Before long, a faint light appeared in the pitch-black cavern, causing everyone who had adapted to the darkness to shield their eyes.
It turned out that Jufeng had found one of the wall lamps that had existed in the mine before. When the ground shook violently, the lamp had fallen as well, but now Jufeng had picked it up again, and it was still usable.
He walked back to Yang Fang with the lamp in hand. Yang Fang couldn't help but nod inwardly; this guy who had saved him was indeed clever, unlike the others who were wallowing in self-pity and tears, seemingly devoid of any useful thoughts.
Earlier, when things were too critical, Yang Fang hadn't had time to see Jufeng's face clearly. Now, under the weak light, he began to examine him closely.
He had a youthful and handsome face that looked barely over twenty, with bright eyes that radiated intelligence.
"What’s your name?" Yang Fang asked weakly.
Jufeng placed the lamp in front of him, squatted down opposite Yang Fang, and chuckled as he replied, "My name is Ju Feng; I'm the one who works alongside women."
Yang Fang had no impression of Ju Feng's name, but now that he saw him working with a woman, he certainly remembered. The woman was quite dark-skinned, with countless freckles on her face, which was a pity given her figure.
Yang Fang had always been curious about why a man would bring a woman to work, and now that he had the chance, he decided to ask.
Jufeng hesitated for a moment before saying, "To be honest with you, I used to be involved in the underworld for a while. But then I got into some trouble with the law and had to run away. This woman stayed by my side during my tough times. I thought, even though she’s not the prettiest, I shouldn’t treat her poorly, so I’ve kept her around."
Hearing this, Yang Fang felt somewhat relieved; it turned out Romain had experience in the Underworld, which explained his agility. Otherwise, he might have had some doubts. But then he thought about it again—how could a military undercover agent bring a woman along? Once he figured that out, his gaze toward Jufeng became even more eager.
"Don't worry, we'll be going out soon."
Jufeng chuckled and replied, "I'm not worried. Unlike these people here, they have no prospects at all."
Yang Fang looked at the anxious miners and couldn't help but laugh a few times as well.
