Civilization and Jiang Xue left the floor, walking down the staircase of Huankezhao, taking the elevator down to their dormitory. The building, made of synthetic transparent glass, offered an expansive view, with a myriad of commercial buildings standing in succession and a bustling street filled with a tide of people.
Outside, the sunlight was just right, while inside the elevator, Jiang Xue was feeling delicate.
At first, Jiang Xue had no extra thoughts about Civilization; she merely regarded him as a simple bodyguard, someone to rely on for physical strength. However, as time passed, she began to realize that Civilization was not just a brute. He was thoughtful and handled matters with a gentleness akin to water, yet at times he could be as tough as steel. He was a young man who understood boundaries well. By Jiang Xue's side, he never overstepped, making it easy for her to develop a fondness for him.
Moreover, what was even more important was Civilization's extraordinary learning ability! Forgive Sister Xue for using such terminology to describe a man, but it truly wasn't an exaggeration. After entering the beginner level, during his idle moments, he began studying mechas and made rapid progress. Initially, Jiang Xue thought of him merely as a distraction from her own life. However, one day when Civilization asked her a question, she was astonished to discover just how impressive he was; having only been exposed to mechas for a short time, he could pose such insightful and profound questions.
The conversation went as follows:
"Are you sure you've never studied anything about mechas before?"
"Well, technically I did come across it once. I saw your textbook in Tong Bailong's room by chance and flipped through a couple of pages before putting it back."
"…"
At that moment, Jiang Xue turned her head away and decided she didn't want to talk to this man anymore.
Of course, that was just a fleeting thought and quite impractical. Civilization always managed to show Jiang Xue surprising things; it felt like every moment spent with him was a new transformation. Now that two months had passed, her understanding of Civilization had become more comprehensive.
Thus, when she faced him now, she no longer exhibited the same carefree liveliness she had around Jufeng; instead, shyness began to creep in.
In the narrow space with just the two of them, Civilization always appeared calm and unruffled while Jiang Xue found herself searching for topics to discuss.
Jiang Xue said softly, "I feel really bad having to trouble you every time something like this happens."
The phrase "a beauty brings disaster" is certainly an accurate judgment under specific circumstances; at least it had been well validated over these past two months. Civilization smiled gently—not overly cheerful nor cold—just right like the warm spring breeze that opens the blossoms of early spring.
He replied, "Miss Jiang doesn't need to be so polite. It's my duty to protect you. To put it bluntly, this is how I earn my living. So if you keep being this polite, I might feel embarrassed."
Jiang Xue understood this reasoning naturally; however, she could no longer regard him as an ordinary bodyguard. It had long been evident that Jufeng's attitude toward him was far from that of a boss and employee; there was mutual respect between them that transcended what Civilization expressed verbally.
Jiang Xue nodded lightly, not wanting to display any feminine airs, but in the face of civilization, it inevitably showed through.
This topic could not continue, so Jiang Xue sought another conversation starter.
“How is your mecha piloting skill now?”
Civilization's extraordinary learning ability was not only reflected in the manufacturing of mechas but also in their operation. During her research process, Jiang Xue needed some firsthand data, which referred to the real-time simulation data from a Mecha Pilot. Therefore, there was a profession within Huankezhao known as a mecha tester, which naturally came in different levels for measuring data at any time.
However, as trainees, Huankezhao would not provide testers for them since they were not yet at the beginner level. Yet Jiang Xue's skills far surpassed those of her peers, making her in dire need of a tester. She initially planned to return to the headquarters of Zongheng Express to seek one out, but not wanting to reveal any connections, she decided to try it herself. To her surprise, the results were unexpectedly good. She advanced to the first rank and reached the upper segment of Scarlet Level. Now, two months had passed, and even Jiang Xue was uncertain about what level she had achieved.
After pondering for a moment, Civilization said, “You’re probably at Blue Rank Upper Level now. The later stages of mecha piloting are quite difficult; improvement isn’t something that can be achieved quickly. It might take another half month to reach Azure Level.”
Upon hearing this, Jiang Xue was utterly shocked. She raised her head and looked at Civilization with astonishment, questioning, “Are you sure you’re not just trying to show off?”
Civilization was taken aback by her words and seemed to realize what Jiang Xue meant. Feeling somewhat awkward, he scratched his head and chuckled, “I’ve been working in isolation and didn’t know what the normal progress looks like. I thought it would be quick at first but slowed down later because my abilities weren’t sufficient.”
It was no wonder Jiang Xue reacted so strongly; after all, achieving Blue Rank Upper Level in just two months was a feat typically reserved for those with exceptional talent. For ordinary individuals like those in the Cosmic Police Ironclad Corps—such as Chen Long and many others—it took five or six years to reach Blue Rank Upper Level. If Civilization had made that statement in front of them just now, he might have faced a collective backlash.
What a blatant display of disdain!
Seeing that Civilization didn’t seem to be lying, Jiang Xue realized she had misunderstood him and fell silent for a moment. Engaging in conversation with someone like him truly left one with little choice but to remain quiet.
After a while, the elevator reached the ground floor. A man and a woman walked side by side out of the imposing Huankezhao and into the outdoors, stepping into freedom.
From above, the world below seemed so small; now having descended into reality, she realized she was merely a part of this transient existence.
Jiang Xue watched as people came and went like threads weaving through a loom. Suddenly she felt that she had already spent two months at Huankezhao. During these two months, she had been immersed in models and numbers; now that her beginner phase was coming to an end and she was about to enter Intermediate level, it felt almost surreal.
“I spoke with my sisters yesterday; I heard Feng is coming back soon, and they are likely returning to Earth.”
Civilization keenly sensed a hint of nostalgia in the woman’s tone beside him. He thought for a moment but didn’t know how to offer comfort.
After a long pause, he finally spoke a carefully considered but somewhat impulsive statement.
"They have gone back. I will always be here to protect you."
There was not much commotion, but Jiang Xue suddenly felt, for the first time in her life, that there was a man who provided her with more security than her father.
A sudden breeze blew by, causing Jiang Xue to instinctively tighten her clothes.
"Thank you. I will talk to Huankezhao and make you my exclusive test subject. I believe we can be together without any exams."
The two exchanged smiles and stepped forward, disappearing into the crowd.
