Jufeng and Yang Kan were upstairs, enjoying drinks and engaging in lively conversation. Under Yang Kan's enthusiastic demeanor, they quickly became familiar with each other and were having a great time.
Seeing that the mood had settled, Jufeng casually decided to ask a question. Originally, he had planned to use more forceful methods, but he needed to find the right opportunity. Now that the moment had arrived, he took the chance to probe a little.
"Brother Yang, you seem to be doing quite well now. What did you do before?"
With the alcohol flowing, Jufeng filled Yang Kan's glass again and casually continued the conversation.
At this point, Yang Kan had already opened up quite a bit to Jufeng. Eager for talent, he naturally responded with sincerity. When reminiscing about the past, he couldn't help but mention his experience in forming the Wolf Fang Gang, which brought forth some proud memories.
Upon hearing this, Yang Kan, buoyed by the effects of the drink and encouraged by Jufeng's earlier nod of approval, felt quite pleased with himself and replied softly with a hint of pride.
"Brother Yang has someone backing him."
Jufeng raised an eyebrow at this revelation, hesitating before saying, "So Brother Yang comes from a prominent family!"
Curiosity was evident on his face, but he refrained from pressing further, showing that Jufeng knew how to gauge the situation appropriately.
Yang Kan felt satisfied; someone capable and discreet was ideal for a reliable subordinate.
After building anticipation, he slowly continued, "I did some work for Huankezhao before and made quite a bit of money. I invested almost all of it into the Wolf Fang Gang. Thankfully, with Brother Jufeng's help, we've truly gained an advantage!"
Jufeng humbly deflected the praise, attributing his assistance to Yang Kan's own merits. He smiled broadly while feeling reassured about his suspicions.
It seemed that Huankezhao was indeed pulling strings behind the scenes; ensuring the safety of this Witness was now paramount.
Jufeng continued to enjoy his conversation with Yang Kan while secretly plotting to find an opportunity to lure him away.
However, just as he was deep in thought, suddenly the window on the second floor shattered with a loud crash, and a figure swiftly appeared before everyone.
Jufeng did not turn around immediately, for he had sensed the presence of that figure just a second before the window shattered.
Having collaborated countless times and often being inseparable, the aura was incredibly familiar to him. He also knew that Chen Tan Hua should be safely downstairs, waiting for his signal. However, since he had appeared here against all odds, it meant something unexpected had occurred below.
Thus, Jufeng's first instinct was to reach for Yang Kan.
No matter what the unexpected situation was, subduing Yang Kan to achieve his goal was of utmost importance. Yang Kan had been enjoying a pleasant conversation with Jufeng when suddenly, without warning, Romain's hand appeared. Yang Kan was caught off guard and found himself restrained at a vital point, unable to move.
“ Jufeng, what do you mean by this?”
The effects of the alcohol that had slightly intoxicated Yang Kan vanished in an instant, as if he had been doused with a bucket of cold water, leaving him completely sober.
Jufeng let out a cold laugh, tightening his grip on Yang Kan's neck. He spoke in a chilling tone, “What it means is not important; what matters is that if you don’t behave and listen, I can’t guarantee you’ll live to see the next second.”
Hearing Jufeng's words and feeling the pressure on his neck confirmed to Yang Kan that he was in danger and that his life was no longer in his own hands. A hint of worry crossed his brow.
Jufeng had no time to consider Yang Kan's reaction. He shouted at the crowd surrounding Chen Tan Hua, “If you don’t want your boss to lose his life, it’s best for all of you to behave.”
Seeing Yang Kan held captive by Jufeng, the subordinates of Wolf Fang Gang instinctively stepped back. Jufeng took Yang Kan hostage and moved to join Chen Tan Hua.
With a worried expression, Chen Tan Hua whispered, “I noticed some Gunner members coming up from downstairs.”
Jufeng furrowed his brow upon hearing this; he hadn’t expected these Gunner members to be so relentless. Huankezhao’s response was indeed swift.
Exchanging glances with Chen Tan Hua, Jufeng then leaped out of the window while holding onto Yang Kan, followed closely by Chen Tan Hua.
The members of Wolf Fang Gang hesitated due to concerns for Yang Kan’s safety and dared not act recklessly; only two people could leap from this second floor. However, before they could jump down themselves, gunshots rang out from outside the door, followed by someone kicking it open.
Suddenly, more than a dozen Gunner members appeared. Once they entered the room, they ordered everyone to raise their hands above their heads. The leader glanced at the shattered window, slammed his fist against the wall in frustration, and then dispatched several skilled subordinates to continue the pursuit while he made a phone call.
"Report, the operation at Wolf Fang Bar has failed. The target is on the run and requires support."
...
After leaving Wolf Fang Bar, Jufeng and Chen Tan Hua found their escape route far from easy. One reason was due to the presence of Yang Kan, a burden they had to carry; the other was the sudden influx of police officers appearing from all directions, searching for them on every street corner. Despite it being night, their progress was still arduous.
After wandering around, they were forced into a district. Judging by its scale and the appearance of its buildings, it seemed to be a medium-sized area. However, once inside, it felt like an ocean of depth. Although their pursuers had not yet located Jufeng and Chen Tan Hua, they had surrounded the district.
With no gaps in the encirclement, the two of them, along with the restrained Yang Kan, found themselves with almost nowhere to escape. The greenery in the district was decent, but the sparse trees were hardly suitable for hiding.
Jufeng recalled an incident when they were shot at in Canglang's Floating Life; only five of them had managed to escape into hiding after that ordeal. Their chosen refuge had been a girl’s home in that district who had just returned from work.
Thus, he and Chen Tan Hua discussed their options. With no viable alternatives and realizing how quickly the police were responding with overwhelming force beyond their expectations, they decided to temporarily seek shelter in a residential building.
This was a random event; which house they chose would depend on fate.
Given Yang Kan's presence as a liability, they could only opt for a lower floor and would need to enter through a window. Along the way, Chen Tan Hua and Jufeng destroyed nearly all surveillance cameras they encountered before selecting a nearby lit window to enter.
The two worked together to leap onto the second floor from outside. Chen Tan Hua gently tapped on the window and hid in a corner where he wouldn’t be seen, waiting for a response from inside.
In just a moment, the curtains inside were slowly drawn open. It was dawn now; such a soft sound could easily be heard by those within.
From his position, Chen Tan Hua could only see a cascade of long hair—revealing that it was a girl. She glanced around but saw nothing amiss and prepared to turn back inside.
Chen Tan Hua couldn’t let her leave like that; he swiftly tapped again.
The girl stopped in her tracks as she turned to leave, then suddenly spun around and approached the window once more, peering out again, but it seemed she still found nothing. After a moment of hesitation, she slowly pushed the window open just a crack.
But for Chen Tan Hua, that small opening was already enough.
In an instant, five fingers blocked the gap, and with a firm twist of her hand, the window swung wide open. Then, a figure swiftly leaped into the room, pinning the girl to the ground.
Jufeng followed closely behind, quickly turning to check outside to ensure no one was watching before he turned back.
However, the scene before him left Jufeng momentarily stunned. Chen Tan Hua was atop the girl, and several seconds had passed without either of them moving from their positions.
He slowly approached, observing Chen Tan Hua's awkward profile and the girl's bewildered expression, and suddenly found himself unable to suppress a quiet laugh.
"This is truly fate. We just parted ways at the hotel, and you've found your way home directly. You two carry on; I'll just take a look around."
