In the midst of the bustling crowd, under the watchful eyes of many, Jufeng seemed oblivious to everything around him, his gaze solely fixed on the woman kneeling before him. It was not an act of desperation, but rather one that came from the depths of his heart.
"It may seem abrupt, but you know as well as I do that we are no longer the young people we were eight years ago. Now, caught in the whirlpool of current events, time has not afforded us many opportunities to enjoy the fleeting beauty of life. Therefore, I must seize every moment."
"Now that you have appeared, I have come to my senses. So, with a bit of audacity, I kneel here in front of so many people. Look at those men around us; their fierce glares could almost devour me. They wouldn't be so heartless as to reject me, would they?"
What had started as an emotional moment quickly turned playful again. Vera's tears sparkled at the corners of her eyes and burst into countless shimmering stars with a light chuckle.
"Seeing you like this, if I don't agree to your proposal, it would be quite a blow to your pride—after all, you are the Boss of Global Top Fifty!"
"Promise me, Wind, that you will never abandon me and let me stay by your side."
Vera gently took Jufeng's wine glass and then fell into his embrace.
There were no tokens of love, no diamond rings or flowers—just a few heartfelt words that melted away their past.
The two held each other tightly amidst the envious and jealous gazes of those around them.
It was unclear who started clapping first, but soon the applause spread like a yawn in a sleepy afternoon—contagious and widespread.
In the distance, those unaware of the situation began to clap as news of the proposal circulated, offering their blessings.
At any time, a proposal is filled with admiration and well-wishes; even passersby stop to smile because marriage is one of the most beautiful things in the world, and fate often makes hearts flutter.
The applause thundered as Jufeng and Vera embraced passionately in front of everyone, reminiscent of classic princes and princesses from centuries past.
The sound drew everyone's attention, transforming the chaotic venue into a unified atmosphere. As the applause continued to echo, a melodious tune began to play softly in the background.
Every time the United Nations held a conference in the past, such music would fill households through their televisions. Huankezhao opened with this melody, its meaning as clear as the moonlight.
The music pulled everyone’s thoughts from the sweetness of love back to reality. Tonight was Huankezhao's stage; Shangguan Wangyu was supposed to be the main character. Yet this young man's proposal had emerged just as the banquet was about to begin—wasn't it somewhat overshadowing?
Some cunning schemers seemed to catch a whiff of intrigue in the air.
Jufeng and Vera slowly parted ways amidst the music. Jufeng looked at Vera, whose face was slightly flushed, and said apologetically, "Do you think my proposal at this moment feels a bit conspiratorial?"
Vera smiled gently and replied, "I'm not a naive girl anymore; I understand the intentions behind this. Can't it be explained as a win-win situation? I know your feelings are genuine, and that's enough for me. Why must we insist on the purity of the proposal? From now on, I will be the wife of the wind."
Jufeng took Vera's hand and softly said, "Holding your hand."
Vera responded gracefully, "Growing old together with you."
The melodious music was approaching its end, and the banquet was about to begin. In front of the venue stood a square platform with several people below it, all core members of Shangguan Wangyu's team.
Among them was a middle-aged man in his forties, with a lewd expression that made even his smile seem tainted by a sense of filth.
He stood beside Shangguan Wangyu, having just shifted his gaze from the holographic image in his hand, and addressed Shangguan Wangyu.
"Your Highness, this fool is investigating you in secret. He really doesn't know his place. Does he think that by staging a scene in our venue he can change tonight's outcome? I believe Your Highness has already thought of a way to make him suffer tonight—perhaps even shatter him completely and sell his beloved into a brothel to vent your anger."
The middle-aged man was named Weiso. He had once been one of the secretaries to the United Nations Secretary-General and had navigated through political waters skillfully, contributing significantly to Shangguan Wangyu's rise to power. In front of outsiders, he was extremely formal, but since Shangguan Wangyu ascended to the throne, he no longer concealed his true nature and became increasingly reckless.
Shangguan Wangyu did not particularly like Weiso; however, within his camp, he had yet to find a suitable replacement for Weiso. Otherwise, his head would not be resting so securely on his shoulders.
Shangguan Wangyu smiled slightly and replied politely, "You are right, Lord Weiso. Such a person truly deserves to be punished severely. If we do kill him later, we should first send that beauty to you for your enjoyment."
Weiso eagerly anticipated this response from Shangguan Wangyu. Seeing that the prince had genuinely fulfilled his wish, he immediately broke into a beaming smile and nodded repeatedly, saying, "Thank you, Your Highness! Thank you!"
As soon as he finished speaking, Cao Ke appeared from the side. While Shangguan Wangyu was willing to play along with Weiso, Cao Ke harbored no fondness for him and showed no restraint in his disdain. Thus, Weiso felt far more apprehensive towards Cao Ke than towards Shangguan Wangyu. Upon seeing Cao Ke approach, he quickly acknowledged the prince and turned to leave.
"Are you really planning to play seriously? The outcome is hard to predict. If I were you, I might just capture him right now. The result is more meaningful than the process."
Cao Ke thought about how Jufeng could create such a spectacle of a proposal in this setting. Remembering how Jiang Xue's sister had died on the operating table eight years ago because of Jufeng, he couldn't help but feel a surge of loathing towards him. How could a man not be loyal in love? If Jiang Xue were willing to give her heart to him, then in this life and beyond, she would be the only woman for him.
Shangguan Wangyu noticed Cao Ke's change in mood and couldn't help but laugh. "It's rare to encounter an interesting opponent; if we can play with him, why not? Besides, even if he leaves, what does it matter? I'm not afraid of either the Universal Police or the United Nations; why should I fear just one person?"
From any angle one looked at it, Jufeng could not compare himself to the Universal Police or the United Nations. Even though he was the king of the Underworld on Earth and owned a Global Top Fifty enterprise, compared to Shangguan Wangyu's power over a Star System, they were worlds apart.
Cao Ke originally thought that a thousand-mile dike could collapse because of an ant's nest. However, seeing the rare excitement on Shangguan Wangyu's face, he ultimately swallowed his words.
The melody came to an end, and the venue fell into silence, so quiet that one could hear a pin drop.
The curtain of the banquet was finally about to rise.
Shangguan Wangyu slowly walked up to the high platform, then scanned the vast crowd with a sweeping gaze, remaining silent for a moment.
It was unclear who started the applause first, but soon it spread rapidly, becoming deafening and echoing throughout the hall.
This was the second round of thunderous applause.
