“ Jufeng, aren't you curious? How I can foresee your arrival here today?”
Hundreds and thousands of mechs soared through the night sky, exuding a chilling and terrifying aura.
Jufeng did not stop; he simply listened to Xiao Ji's words, his mind swirling with thoughts. With a hint of amusement, he replied, “I don’t quite understand what you mean by that, Miss Xiao. Are you trying to sow discord? That seems rather petty.”
There was a deeper meaning behind Jufeng's words, leaving the truth ambiguous.
Xiao Ji snorted in response, saying, “General Ju, that’s quite a bold statement. If you truly had any certainty, would you even bother to engage with me? And let me warn you, don’t call me ‘Miss.’”
Xiao Ji disliked being addressed with terms that carried a sense of gentleness or delicacy; this was why even her closest subordinates referred to her as General.
Jufeng had already anticipated this reaction. When he pulled Vera down and refrained from advancing recklessly, all the potential reasons and possible outcomes were well within his considerations.
“Miss Xiao truly has keen insight; you even know what I’m thinking. Am I harboring a worm in my belly? And about the term ‘Miss,’ I still think it’s more polite this way.”
Xiao Ji’s beautiful eyes widened in anger as she glared at Jufeng ahead of her. In fury, she pressed several buttons in rapid succession, sending dozens of shells flying out.
The subordinates of the Scorpion Army watched the barrage of shells rain down and dutifully coordinated their efforts. Unfortunately, the shells were too far from Jufeng and his group; they either fell short or were intercepted by Qi Fa and others.
Watching the enraged Xiao Ji, Qi Fa mused that indeed there was a difference between how women and men commanded troops; everything seemed to be dictated by personality!
Jufeng laughed heartily and continued to provoke Xiao Ji, “Miss Xiao, my wife has been wanting to spar with you again. It’s unfair that we’ve taken advantage of your territory today. I’d like to invite you over to our place; we’ll treat you well.”
The sharpness of his words was evident, causing Xiao Ji's chest to rise and fall violently as her tight military uniform seemed on the verge of bursting.
After a moment, she ordered a halt to the pursuit; continuing like this would yield no results. Moreover, time was tight, and there was no opportunity to notify the nearest battleship group.
In the end, she left behind only one statement.
“ Jufeng, remember this: I will take my revenge for today. I simply cannot stand the presence of scoundrels in the military, especially those who think they are clever. The truth is just as you suspect; I hope you can survive the internal pressure. A good invitation, don’t forget! Hmph!”
Xiao Ji finished and immediately closed the communication, leading everyone back.
Jufeng and his group stood among their main forces under the starry sky and hurried back. Xiao Ji's last words were not without purpose— Jufeng thought to himself that it could only be someone like Pand Zhong.
The mission was assigned by him, and military secrets could not be leaked to others. If anyone had informed Xiao Ji, it could only be Pand Zhong.
Jufeng was furious. He allowed differing opinions but could not tolerate them using such methods to endanger his life and that of the Dragon Breaker Army.
Warriors do not die on the battlefield; they die in the schemes of politicians. How could Jufeng accept that?
So he rushed back, determined to seek justice for the Dragon Breaker Army, for the fallen Dragon Elder, and for himself.
At the same time, he received news that further fueled his anger.
On the front lines, Wen Yun's second and final consolation visit went very smoothly, a perfect ending. Originally, they were supposed to stay one night and return the next morning. However, fate seemed to prevent them from returning without incident.
There are many types of front lines; Wen Yun's consolation visit took place in a densely populated area. Among the passersby attending the consolation visit concert were many people who stayed at a hospitable inn offering free accommodations.
As night deepened, many had already fallen asleep. Meanwhile, on another distant border where it was also night, Jufeng's group had just engaged in fierce battles, and extraordinary events were unfolding there as well.
Chen Tan Hua and Sisi had just finished discussing self-defense techniques and the reasons behind Long Night’s insomnia. Just as Sisi’s head touched the pillow, she noticed a man climbing onto her bed from behind.
Sisi's first reaction was to employ the self-defense techniques Chen Tan Hua had taught her and which she had been practicing recently. Faced with such a situation, her instinct was to roll forward to escape danger.
However, the theory Chen Tan Hua had taught her seemed ineffective; just as her body began to move, it abruptly halted. Someone covered her mouth from behind.
"Don't panic, it's me."
Hearing the familiar voice beside her, Sisi felt her recently tightened heart relax. This voice belonged to her master, Chen Tan Hua, whom she had heard the most lately.
However, as she relaxed for a moment, Sisi suddenly felt a wave of inexplicable tension wash over her. Why was Brother Sanlang here in the dead of night? Did he want something more intimate? But what should she do…
A man entering a woman's bed in the middle of the night could lead anyone to think wildly. Chen Tan Hua sensed Sisi's tense body and quickly whispered an explanation, "There are thieves outside."
In these chaotic times, it was normal to encounter some petty criminals, but Chen Tan Hua's words were military jargon, meaning someone was targeting them.
What they sought was not wealth but their lives.
Upon hearing this, Sisi realized she had misunderstood and felt a flush creep up her face. Understanding the gravity of the situation, she steadied her mind and prepared herself to respond to the unexpected crisis.
Listening intently to the sounds outside, Sisi noticed some noises that were different from the usual night sounds.
"Brother, what should we do? There are only about thirty soldiers left here. Can we handle this?"
Sisi's expression grew serious; this was her first mission since becoming captain, and now encountering such an emergency naturally made her anxious.
Chen Tan Hua listened to the sounds outside and estimated that there were at least twenty or thirty thieves approaching from their direction. The layout of the inn made it clear how many there could be.
"To be safe, when we get a chance, Sisi, you need to send out a distress signal immediately. The nearest station can arrive in five minutes; we'll be fine."
With Chen Tan Hua's reassurance, Sisi felt much less tense. Soon after, there was a subtle sound of a door being pushed open.
It was delicate and light; someone deep in sleep would likely not notice it. However, neither of the two in this room was asleep.
The silenced pistol fired several shots towards the bed, and feeling that the situation was about right, the two people who entered the room stepped closer to check what was happening.
As they approached, they suddenly lifted the blanket, but aside from some feathers scattered from the broken bedding, there was no sign of anyone.
The two realized something was wrong, but it was already too late.
Chen Tan Hua leaped out from under the bed, a dagger appearing in his hand seemingly out of nowhere. Without mercy, he swiftly slashed it across one of the intruder's necks.
As for the other one, he was already ensnared by Sisi's self-defense technique. After dealing with the first intruder, Chen Tan Hua turned and struck again, sending the second one into oblivion.
Sisi had killed before, so she wasn't particularly shocked by the violence.
Chen Tan Hua gave Sisi a thumbs up, and she smiled back at him. In that atmosphere, she resembled a lily blooming on a desolate battlefield.
