In the vast Assembly Hall, amidst a crowd as bustling as the mountains and seas, Jufeng, having transitioned from a state of eager anticipation to his thirties, found himself attending such a large-scale conference for the first time.
During the hierarchy of seating arrangements, Jufeng was fortunate enough to sit relatively close to the front, allowing him to catch a glimpse of the esteemed Commanders on stage. As for Ouyang Chang, despite being the Master of the Dragon Breaker Army, he could only occupy a middle-to-back position, his view limited to the large screen above rather than the distant podium.
Vera's situation was even more dire; she was far removed from the proceedings. Fortunately, her presence there was solely to accompany Jufeng.
The tiered Assembly Hall resembled a judgment hall where individuals were categorized by their rank.
Bored, Jufeng listened as several Commanders took turns delivering reports. Their messages revolved around the current tense situation and how advanced their equipment was, capable of handling any unexpected events. In essence, it was all for the benefit of the journalists on either side and the weary masses behind them.
In this dull interlude, Jufeng's gaze fell upon the War God, Chen Ziping, seated further ahead. Observing his half-closed eyes and relaxed demeanor made Romain chuckle inwardly. The temperament of this War God bore some resemblance to his own.
Unbeknownst to Jufeng, not long ago, Chen Ziping had expressed similar sentiments about him. Fate seemed destined to intertwine these two remarkable figures separated by years; as Chen Ziping's era approached its conclusion, Jufeng was on the rise.
In a sense, this could be seen as a form of legacy. However, judging by Chen Ziping's current state, it might still take some time before he truly passed the baton.
As several Commanders bombarded the media with information, it soon came time for Zhang Huwei to speak. This boisterous and passionate soldier spoke plainly and without hesitation, even forgoing a draft in favor of straightforward language.
Clearly, this was not the first time the media had experienced such an event; they showed no signs of surprise. While Commander Zhang spoke eloquently, taking care not to miss any details in his delivery, it was evident that he was a figure of great interest to the public each year.
After Zhang Huwei finished speaking, it was Pand Zhong's turn at the podium. Jufeng's attention instantly waned; he turned away and focused elsewhere.
In that brief moment, Jufeng muttered something that caused a nearby general to stifle a laugh.
"That old man’s beard grows pretty fast."
Jufeng had gained his reputation in the Military largely due to an incident at Pand Zhong's headquarters where he single-handedly overturned an entire guard unit and even pulled out quite a bit of Pand Zhong's beard hair. Such a glorious achievement had been talked about in Military circles for quite some time.
Thus, when the general beside Jufeng arrived and saw the nameplate on their table, he realized how fortunate he was to sit next to such an idol. Upon hearing Jufeng's comment, he nearly burst into laughter, almost causing a disaster at the meeting.
Quickly covering his mouth, he composed himself immediately. The general acted as if nothing had happened and continued listening intently to Pand Zhong’s speech. The speed of his reaction left Jufeng feeling somewhat impressed.
Meetings generally have a peculiar ability: they can induce a state of hypnosis. It surpasses even the most skilled hypnotist swinging a pocket watch in front of you. Without anyone realizing, it lulls people into a drowsy stupor.
Finally, just before Jufeng was about to rest his head on the table, the morning meeting came to a perfect conclusion.
Lunch was naturally taken care of at the United Nations Assembly Hall, and the food provided by the United Nations was undoubtedly excellent.
Jufeng and Vera found Civilization and Jiang Xue in the cafeteria. Jiang Xue was rubbing her sleepy eyes, looking utterly exhausted.
The table was filled with prepared dishes. After sitting down, Jufeng looked at Jiang Xue and teased, “So, did you sleep well?”
Jiang Xue rolled her eyes at Jufeng helplessly and replied in a delicate voice, “I came here to attend the meeting seriously, unlike you. Vera, did he drool while sleeping?”
Vera shook her head and smiled gently, “I was too far away to see clearly. However, there were quite a few people around me who were sound asleep.”
Hearing this, Jiang Xue's face flushed slightly, clearly embarrassed as she too had been in a deep slumber. Civilization smiled faintly and picked a piece of vegetable for Jiang Xue’s bowl, which touched Vera.
As they chatted together, Ouyang Chang naturally joined in, making it seem like they were all one big family.
In the middle of their meal, Jufeng suddenly looked up and spotted a familiar figure. He then stood up, briefly explained something to Vera and the others, and left his seat.
The United Nations Assembly Hall was bustling with people and lavishly decorated; even the restrooms had an ambiance reminiscent of Winding Path to Tranquility.
Jufeng navigated through the crowd, pushing open doors until he arrived at a serene area. A faint fragrance lingered in the air, making it hardly resemble a restroom.
Looking at the figure before him, Jufeng smiled and said, “I didn’t know there was such a place in the United Nations Assembly Hall! Truly luxurious. How did you find out about it?”
The person turned around; it was Ganwen, whom he hadn’t seen for two years. He still exuded elegance and appeared remarkably capable.
However, his expression seemed somewhat off.
Jufeng was momentarily taken aback, unsure why Ganwen looked at him with such an expression.
"I have a habit of seeking out less crowded restrooms, so whenever I arrive at a place, I tend to walk a bit further to find a quiet one. That's how I ended up here."
His tone was relatively neutral, and Jufeng chose not to respond, knowing that Ganwen had more to say.
He continued, "General, it seems you've been doing well at the border these past two years. Have you become so comfortable that you've forgotten who your companions are?"
Ganwen's sarcastic remark should have angered Jufeng, as he had done nothing wrong. However, he understood why Ganwen acted this way; he had thought about it earlier but had forgotten until now.
"Is it about this morning?"
Ganwen scoffed, "You know the answer already."
Jufeng smiled lightly and walked over to the window where a potted plant sat, its faint fragrance adding to the fresh atmosphere.
"When did our Councilor Gan become so impatient? You can't even see through such lowly tactics from the enemy. It's truly disappointing."
Upon hearing Jufeng's words, Ganwen suddenly realized something. During lunch earlier, someone had informed him about Liu Lei's meeting with Jufeng that morning. He immediately thought of the negative implications but hadn't taken the time to think it through.
Now that he had the chance to reflect further, he couldn't help but feel deep regret. It turned out that Liu Lei's actions were merely a simple method of sowing discord.
Ganwen took a deep breath and said, "I'm sorry; I was too impulsive. With the elections approaching, I've been increasingly anxious, like a tightly drawn bowstring—any slight disturbance makes me think too far ahead. Please don't take it personally."
Jufeng could see the weariness etched on Ganwen's face and reassured him, "Don't worry; I won't overthink it. It's just concerning to see you in this state. You shouldn't collapse before the final results are even in."
Ganwen shook his head, indicating that he was fine. They chatted about various trivial matters from the past two years and recent trends, making Jufeng realize just how challenging life as a politician could be.
After exchanging a few more words, Ganwen was the first to leave; he still had many matters to attend to and could only manage two or three hours of sleep each night.
Jufeng leaned against the window, idly playing with a potted plant while digesting Ganwen's words. Suddenly, his phone vibrated in his pocket.
He took out his phone and saw that it was a call from Liu Gulang.
Liu Gulang was someone who understood the importance of timing. He knew that Jufeng was in a meeting, and if he was calling, it must be something urgent.
Jufeng frowned slightly and answered the call.
"Brother Jufeng, there's been an incident on Earth. Chuyang has been captured by Huankezhao."
With a snap, Jufeng broke off a branch from the potted plant.
