“After the fall of Magellan Star, it seems you've been busier than ever.”
Jufeng's calm voice echoed in Ganwen's ears. They were using the emergency communication network established during wartime, accessible only to senior management in the government and military.
Ganwen felt an inexplicable sense of fear creeping in as he listened to Jufeng's words, as if the pressure of Jufeng standing right beside him was palpable.
Gathering his thoughts, Ganwen confirmed that there was indeed no one else in the room before slowly asking, “Yeah, I've been extremely busy lately. Liu Lei's United Nations is already on shaky ground. For us, this is the best opportunity. After the three-month delay for the elections, our chances of winning have risen to seventy percent.”
Ganwen spoke calmly, but Jufeng could detect the suppressed excitement beneath his words. However, Jufeng felt an inexplicable resistance to this enthusiasm.
Unable to pinpoint why, Jufeng revealed the purpose of his call.
“I called to ask you to investigate something for me. I believe Cao Ke's large-scale invasion of the Magellan Star System isn't straightforward; there must be more going on behind it. Can you check if Liu Lei has had any unusual activities recently?”
As Ganwen listened to Jufeng's request, his body suddenly tensed up for no apparent reason. He paused and then asked uncertainly, “Why do you think that? Isn't their collusion with Longshu obvious enough? Is there something else?”
Jufeng shifted his stance in the command room and replied steadily, “Perhaps it's really not that simple. My initial feeling was that Cao Ke was targeting me, but after interacting with him a bit, I realized it might not be so straightforward. It seems I'm just an accessory; his true purpose for staying here is more significant than mine.”
This wasn't just Jufeng's inflated self-importance; looking at the entire Magellan Star System, Cao Ke's presence here had lost any benefit.
He wouldn't attack civilian planets; the rest of the military was united, and he couldn't find any advantages. Thus, Jufeng became his only target for retaliation.
Yet Jufeng had a strong feeling that this matter was not as simple as it appeared.
Ganwen swallowed hard and finally said after a long pause, “Alright then, I'll help you investigate. By the way, I want to remind you that Cao Ke doesn't have much power here anymore; it's not worth pursuing him. It would be better to return to Near Earth Star and wait until after the elections when we can reorganize the Magellan Star System.”
Ganwen's advice was politely declined by Jufeng. After hanging up, Jufeng suddenly felt that Ganwen seemed different now. This strange feeling had begun since he saw him at the military-political joint conference.
Perhaps Ganwen had been too tense with all the election matters lately. Jufeng thought this way and figured Ganwen might not have much time to assist him, so he called Liu Gulang instead to entrust him with the same task.
Before the results of the investigation were revealed, both armies had no choice but to temporarily head to the First Army's Border Defense to prepare for any unexpected events. At the same time, they contacted the stationed troops in various locations, instructing them to immediately notify Jufeng if there were any signs of Cao Ke's forces.
Of course, if possible, perhaps Cao Ke would continue to issue challenges! However, the likelihood of such a situation was extremely slim.
The journey to the First Army's border took three hours. As the two armies approached, the First Army appeared on high alert.
"Pan Commander, how can you completely ignore me just because of that incident with the beard? I have important news to share. I believe Cao Ke's next target might be your First Army. Why not let us assist you?" Jufeng said eagerly as he looked at Pand Zhong on the screen, but naturally, he did not receive a warm response.
"Go take your nonsense somewhere else. Who doesn't know that Cao Ke is after you? What kind of ridiculous talk is this? Didn't you see each other three days ago? How was it? Did you enjoy falling into an ambush? Hmph, get as far away from me as possible. I will guard my border; you can go play wherever you want."
Pand Zhong said this and immediately cut off the communication network, leaving the screen completely dark and not even giving Jufeng a chance to plead again.
Ikeda Kenji stepped out from a corner with a smile on his face and said, "So it was you who pulled his beard? It looks like it has grown back nicely."
Ouyang Chang had been standing next to Jufeng from the start and even began to tease when facing Pand Zhong.
"You don't know; it used to be much thicker than now. He probably got scared of the general and those hairs he pulled out never dared to grow back."
With several leaders from both armies gathered together, the other skilled mecha fighters were unwilling to be idle and went off to Sparring in the back. This served as a foundation for communication, allowing both armies to become more familiar with each other quickly.
Jufeng sighed softly; he knew that Cao Ke was hiding in the shadows and must be planning something significant. Perhaps everything he had done from the beginning was in preparation for this grand scheme.
But what exactly was this grand scheme?
The uncertainty about the unknown left Jufeng restless lately. Ikeda Kenji and Ouyang Chang noticed Jufeng's unusual mood and could see that his spirit was not uplifted.
"Don't worry," Ikeda Kenji said as he walked over to Jufeng and patted him on the shoulder in comfort. "No matter what plans Cao Ke has, his tail will eventually show itself. In no time, everything will become clear, and when that happens, we will respond accordingly; we will definitely manage."
Cao Ke was alone in a foreign land, and the energy and equipment he carried had a time limit. Ikeda Kenji was aware that his time to remain quietly in the Magellan Star System was running out. Whether he forced his way back to the Large Magellanic Cloud or resorted to pillaging in the Magellan Star System, he would eventually reveal himself, and that would be the moment when their forces would meet again.
Jufeng understood what Ikeda Kenji meant, but only after facing Cao Ke did he realize that without making some judgments in advance, one could easily suffer a crushing defeat.
The three continued discussing military strategies when suddenly news came from the Near Earth Star. Both Ganwen and Liu Gulang's messages arrived almost simultaneously.
These messages were crucial. Jufeng and his companions had been eagerly awaiting any clues that might come back. He held a strong belief that this information would provide him with an answer.
Even if it was vague.
Without wasting any time, Jufeng rushed to the communication room and opened the channels for both individuals.
