Two phone calls connected simultaneously, but it was not intended for a three-way conference. Ganwen was unaware that there was a third person on the line with Jufeng.
"Jufeng, I've been investigating this matter thoroughly, but I haven't found anything unusual about Liu Lei's behavior. I think you're overthinking it. Cao Ke is simply trying to bribe a spy and plans to eliminate our government in one fell swoop. He just didn't expect us to resist so fiercely and manage to escape," Ganwen said.
Listening to Ganwen's voice, Jufeng's brow remained furrowed. He stayed silent, and the room was unusually quiet.
"Jufeng, can you hear me?" Ganwen asked when he received no response, thinking it might be due to poor interstellar signal.
Jufeng replied gravely, "Oh, I can hear you now. It seems I was overthinking things. In that case, there's nothing more to discuss. I'll continue looking for Cao Ke and see how he plans to return to the Large Magellanic Cloud."
Ganwen's tone lightened a bit as he said, "Thanks for your hard work. I heard from the Military Affairs Department that they calculated a route where Cao Ke is most likely to leave. You should take your troops there; the First Army is safe, and there's no need to waste time elsewhere."
Jufeng paused at this, surprised by Ganwen's choice of words.
He chuckled slightly and said, "Is the sun rising in the west today? Councilor Gan is starting to understand military matters?"
Ganwen appeared embarrassed by the comment and stammered, "I don't really understand military affairs; I'm just saying whatever..."
With that, their conversation ended, leading into a series of unproductive exchanges. Jufeng hung up the phone and paused for a moment before Liu Gulang's voice echoed in the room.
The first sentence was startling.
"Brother Jufeng, our investigation has revealed that Ganwen seems to have some issues."
Upon hearing this, Jufeng showed no surprise; in his mind, he had already labeled Ganwen with suspicion. He couldn't pinpoint exactly what he doubted but felt strongly that Ganwen was hiding something from him.
"You too."
Liu Gulang paused for a moment, seemingly organizing his thoughts, before saying, "I've looked into the situations regarding Liu Lei and Ganwen. Liu Lei is indeed fine; he has been busy with the election issues. However, just before you returned from the border to Magellan Star, Ganwen inspected the border, specifically in that area of Longshu."
Upon hearing this, Jufeng's mind began to race with chaotic thoughts; he couldn't make sense of it all.
"Longshu is associated with Pand Zhong. How could he have any connection with him?"
Liu Gulang replied, "That's what I thought too. Not long after that, Longshu turned against us. There must be some deeper connection here. Additionally, there's another detail: during the attack on Magellan Star, there were zero casualties among the Senior Management of the New Wave Party, while some elites from Liu Lei's side were killed outside. So I believe this isn't just a matter of luck. Brother Jufeng, you need to be cautious!"
With that, Liu Gulang's words came to an end, leaving Jufeng with endless uncertainty. His already uneasy feelings grew even more restless, like a rabbit hopping around in excitement.
Jufeng thought about the First Army not far away and felt that this might be their last chance for a face-to-face meeting.
Back in the command room, Ikeda Kenji and Ouyang Chang were present. They looked at Jufeng's expression and felt a heaviness in their hearts.
"What’s going on?" Ikeda Kenji asked.
Jufeng replied uncertainly, "The situation may have developed beyond our expectations."
"That’s possible. Cao Ke’s actions might be colluding with Ganwen."
As soon as these words were spoken, everyone present gasped in shock. Ouyang Chang was particularly stunned.
"General, how could this be possible? How could the New Wave Party do something like this? Aren't we allies?"
After saying this, Ouyang Chang felt his own words were somewhat ridiculous. In this world, where are there purely loyal allies? Once the connection of interests is lost, everything is meaningless.
Ikeda Kenji was relatively more composed, directly addressing the core issue.
"What is Ganwen's motive?"
Jufeng sat down, his brow furrowed, lost in deep thought. "If nothing unexpected happens, it should be for the upcoming election. Cao Ke's sudden appearance has dealt a heavy blow to Liu Lei's prestige, making the election more favorable for the New Wave Party. Otherwise, if they proceed as planned, their chances of winning in three months will be even greater."
Jufeng racked his brain, seemingly unable to think of any other factors. Ouyang Chang, upon hearing this, seemed to recall something and added, "In that case, there are indeed some discrepancies. Ganwen approached me even before I realized the situation, and it was he who strongly recommended the Dragon Breaker Army to protect the United Nations' departure. Otherwise, we might have ended up fighting like the Xiao Hu Army."
Ouyang Chang's words undoubtedly added to the layers of mystery. However, all evidence seemed to point towards one question: Ganwen was indeed involved in the attack.
Concealing this from himself did not change the fact that it was still an unforgivable act.
The First Army belonged to Liu Lei; did this mean that Cao Ke and Ganwen's next targets would be the First Army?
Doubt always requires reality to substantiate it. Fortunately for Jufeng, reality did not keep him waiting long. Just two hours after the call, problems arose at the First Army's Border Defense base.
Cao Ke's forces had appeared, and on another front, the entire Border Defense line was under relentless attack from the Suihuan Army against the United Forces.
Facing off against the First Army was none other than the Scorpion Army.
Far away in the Magellan Star System near Earth Star, civilization knocked on Ganwen's office door.
He received Jufeng's call and listened to what Jufeng had to say, which made him extremely angry.
A voice from inside called out for him to enter, and civilization pushed open the door.
Ganwen was busy handling the documents in front of him, while a graceful secretary stood nearby, observing. Her sparkling eyes were fixed on the renowned Wenming, and suddenly a sense of doubt arose within her. She wondered why Wenming seemed particularly indifferent today.
Ganwen set down his pen and instructed the secretary to leave. Once the door was closed, he asked, "Did Jufeng send you?"
After finishing the call with Jufeng, he realized that he had not managed to keep his affairs hidden from Jufeng. In truth, he had no intention of hiding anything; he simply found it difficult to voice his concerns and did not want to deceive Jufeng. He could only hope that Jufeng would investigate and uncover the truth.
Wenming heard Ganwen's words and felt that his uncertainty about Jufeng had been confirmed to a large extent, yet he still did not understand.
"What is this all about?"
Ganwen interlaced his fingers and leaned back in his soft chair. The stress of recent times had taken its toll, leaving his hair noticeably grayer and giving him an older appearance.
"The government needs to rejuvenate itself, which requires some necessary measures. We can no longer afford to wait; if we delay any further, the United Nations will be powerless against Huankezhao. Therefore, we must take some extreme actions."
Wenming looked at Ganwen, who spoke with conviction, and his anger grew even more intense. He raised an eyebrow and asked, "What about the innocent civilians, the soldiers, and the Xiao Hu Army?"
Ganwen's expression darkened at the question. "It's similar to the saying that one general's success comes at the cost of countless lives. However, the death of the White Horse War God was an accident. He was too stubborn; he had a chance to escape."
"Bang!"
With a single punch from Wenming, Ganwen and his chair were sent flying across the room until they crashed into the wall behind them.
The office door burst open as a dozen burly men rushed in, ready to attack Wenming.
However, Ganwen firmly waved his hand, and those men had no choice but to retreat reluctantly.
"Don't think you can cover up your sins like this. The blood on your hands will never wash away. One last question, what is the next plan?"
Ganwen, struck by Civilization's punch, felt blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. Being a frail scholar, he was no match for such force.
He coughed violently, as if trying to expel his lungs, and after a while, he began to recover slightly.
"The final agreement is to eliminate the First Army. You need to tell Jufeng immediately that Cao Ke and Xiao Ji have mobilized a large military force; they won't gain anything there. Don't worry about it anymore, just come back quickly!"
Civilization looked at Ganwen with disdain, rarely showing such contempt. "You are not even close to Brother Jufeng; you will never be!"
With that, Civilization slammed the door and left.
