"Ah!" A piercing scream echoed through the air, shaking the ground as if tolling a death knell for the entire Gathering Place. The smoke hung thick, stained with the blood-red traces and the foul stench of Zombies.
Zombies, like the most vicious demons, were eroding human life. Their first stop was the Inner City, which at this moment was at its peak fighting strength, with nearly twenty thousand warriors gathered at the Training Ground.
They had received word that Zombies had invaded the Gathering Place through the Underground Passage. The entire army was gearing up, clad in thick Cotton Armor and wielding crudely made weapons. These weapons were far superior to those used by the Exploration Team, crafted from pots and pans by members of Smelting Village and the Search Team. Their captain wielded a weapon made from kitchen knives obtained through smelting.
These weapons could be considered formidable. At the very least, everyone was using standardized weapons of uniform specifications, unlike the hodgepodge used by those in the Gladiatorial Arena and Search Team.
Naturally, some of their spears had been modified from rebar, with two-meter-long shafts and sharp tips glinting coldly, all meticulously crafted by blacksmiths.
Of course, these individuals were all those who had found little success within the City Guard.
They shared a common name... cannon fodder.
Now they had gathered together to form the front line against the Zombies, while others stood ready for battle at any moment.
"Brothers, let's take down those vile Zombies!" The crowd roared with fervor; no one hesitated. They had no choice but to press on; there was no way out now. The Inner City lay at the heart of the Gathering Place, usually considered the safest area—no one had expected this invasion or perhaps had subconsciously overlooked it.
On the city walls stood countless Zombies, with Second-Level Zombies leading the charge.
The City Guard members watched in horror.
"Charge! Move up!" The wealthy were the first to flee, abandoning everyone else to fend off the Zombies while they themselves made a hasty escape, not even daring to glance back. If they had turned to look even once, they would have already met their end in a Zombie's jaws.
"Quickly, get up there and hold those wretched Zombies back! Otherwise, I'll send someone to feed your families to them!" A rotund merchant commanded his twenty or so guards to resist the approaching Zombies while he fled without a backward glance.
The guards all had family members held hostage by wealthy merchants. If they turned back now, it was likely that none of their loved ones would survive.
"Brothers, let's go! Let's perish together with those monsters. After all... we still have family." Tears streamed down their faces, filled with endless nostalgia.
Perhaps in their hearts, their loved ones were more important than their own lives. Their brave sacrifice became a lifelong anthem of bloodshed.
"Charge!" With tears of determination, the captain of the guard, Ge Er, led the charge, swinging a steel rod that created a flurry of light as it struck down upon the Zombies.
At that moment, they feared neither death nor injury. In front of him, the Zombies fell one by one, their heads shattered and lifeless on the ground.
"Leihong!" One of the guards was drenched in blood, with at least two Zombies clinging to him. These Zombies tore a bloody chunk of flesh from his body and greedily devoured it.
Behind him stood another guard—his younger brother. Just moments ago, he had thrown himself at a Zombie that was lunging for his brother, only to be dragged into the horde and torn to pieces.
His last shout contained only two words: "Survive." Then he breathed his last, leaving nothing but bones behind.
"Leihong, I command you in the name of our captain: survive. Represent all twenty-five brothers in our team and live on. We all have family with Boss Luo, but you don’t; you must live. The Brothers don’t need you to accompany them in death," Ge Er said in a commanding tone to Leihong.
Then everyone charged fearlessly into the horde of Zombies one after another. Each person's final words before death were:
"Leihong, live on for the Brothers. You must carry on as if all five of us are still alive; live as your brother would."
Time and again, whenever Leihong tried to step forward, his teammates would push him back, only to rush into the Zombie horde themselves, buying precious time against the advancing threat.
Even though that time was merely prolonging the inevitable feast for the Zombies.
"Get lost! Do you want our brothers to die in vain?" As the twelfth person fell victim to the Zombie's jaws, Ge Er glared at Leihong with bloodshot eyes. Then, he charged into the horde of Zombies with the remaining eleven brothers.
They surged forward like a wave crashing against the rocks, only to dissipate into mist.
"Brother, Captain Ge Er, Fan Changlong, Lin Zhi... I, Leihong, swear to live on for all of you. I will make something of myself. I will take down every single one of these damned Zombies." Rubbing his crimson eyes, Leihong stumbled back into the crowd and gradually vanished.
The ground was stained with blood as more and more Zombies surged madly from the Sewers. Fortunately, the terrain was narrow, and the Zombies lacked the intelligence to navigate around obstacles.
The Sewers had become the only escape route for the Zombies and their sole source of food.
The battle ahead had begun to lose its intensity. The most ferocious Sewer had fallen silent, while in the other three Sewers, Zombies continued to crawl out only to be consumed by flames.
The Sewers were cramped, with Zombies packed closely together. Gradually, the fire began to spread inward, filling the air with thick smoke and a foul odor reminiscent of charred flesh.
Among them, one Sewer remained untouched by flames and devoid of Zombies; aside from the initial few that had emerged, all others had vanished.
"What do we do now?" The Butchers in the Gladiatorial Arena were momentarily stunned by the absence of opponents. They never expected such a situation where Zombies were gradually disappearing. The intersection of the four Sewers was eerily empty—this felt like the biggest joke in the world.
"We should look for a chance to escape. I think something has happened at the Gathering Place," said Left Guard, pointing towards the Inner City.
There, cries echoed through the air amidst swirling smoke. Flickering lights danced in the sky, but what dominated were the shrill cries of Zombies—sounds that resembled a broken gong and instilled fear in their hearts.
"Let’s go! We need to find that Big Boss who bought us; he has plenty of supplies. Sticking with him will ensure a better life," Left Guard was the first to propose.
However, his voice faltered as within the Gladiatorial Arena, what had once been a united group of fifty split into two factions. About ten people stood beside Left Guard, while over thirty others gathered together, looking at him as if he were a fool.
"Crazy man, I know that hideously ugly woman used to be your Boss. If you want to die with her, that's your choice, but you should at least give the Brothers a way out, right?" The burly man at the front of the crowd spoke sternly.
"Now, we are preparing to join the City Guard. I believe they will provide us with a good life. As for you, it's best if you run away quickly. The Gathering Place is chaotic right now, and no one is here to cause trouble. Otherwise, Zhang Xiao Leader's people would have already come; they won't give you any chance to live." The burly man continued to mock.
The people behind him wore smiles on their faces. Although they had betrayed Zheng Yifan, they cherished the weapons he had provided them, holding them tightly in their hands and close to their chests.
These weapons were worth a fortune; selling them would be enough for a year of their drinking and revelry.
"We walk different paths and cannot conspire together. You take your sunny road, and I'll take my narrow bridge. I only hope that, considering our shared hardships, you will let us pass." Left Guard said resolutely, his gaze fixed intensely on the burly man across from him.
"Fine, you can go." With that, the burly man slowly retreated towards the side of the Gladiatorial Arena.
Left Guard and his group followed the path leading out of the Gladiatorial Arena.
As for those Fences, in the absence of guards, they could easily reach in and trigger the mechanism.
These Fences were originally designed to fend off Zombies; their target was not humans. As long as they gave the Gladiators a glimmer of hope, they wouldn't take reckless risks. After all, the City Guard had nearly twenty thousand men.
Left Guard led his people away, gradually moving further. Their destination was the VIP box where they needed to find Zheng Yifan and Han Rui. Then they would go to retrieve their friends and family who were pledged outside the Gladiatorial Arena.
