"Quick! Go!" In the corridor outside the VIP room, Zheng Yifan pulled Han Rui as they fled, grateful that there were fewer people around to prevent a stampede.
Zheng Yifan already held an Adamantium Shield, a weapon reminiscent of Captain America's emblem. He had casually retrieved it from beneath the sofa, a move that made Han Rui's facial muscles twitch in surprise.
She definitely hadn't seen Zheng Yifan hide the shield under the sofa!
Before she could think further, Zheng Yifan charged ahead into the wide corridor, dragging her along as they ran outside.
At that moment, changes were occurring in the Gladiatorial Arena; in the distance, chaos in the Inner City could be faintly seen.
But he couldn't afford to dwell on that; he had to get Han Rui out as quickly as possible and blend into the crowd to meet Su Qin and leave the Gathering Place. Perhaps before leaving, he could search for those fifty subordinates he had just acquired—an invaluable asset.
"Roar!" The sound of Zombies echoed from the Luxury Box, and one by one, they began to reveal themselves.
Zheng Yifan had never faced them directly; his experience battling Zombies was nearly nonexistent, but he had no choice but to confront such monsters.
However, combat was often unavoidable. A dozen Zombies slowly approached along the corridor.
"Captain, hurry! Take them down!" Han Rui showed no fear as she grabbed her short knife and charged at the Zombies.
In previous battles escaping the city, she had killed several Zombies and knew their ferocity well. If she turned to flee now, there would be no chance of survival.
Those Zombies never seemed to tire; they relentlessly pursued their prey, draining your stamina until you had no strength left to resist when they caught up.
With only a dozen of them, Han Rui believed she could hold them off long enough for Zheng Yifan to escape. If possible, she hoped Zheng Yifan could help take care of Su Qin.
The blade of her short knife gleamed brightly. After casting aside all hesitation, she felt her movements become more agile. With a swift motion, her knife sliced through the head of the nearest Zombie, followed by five more closing in behind it.
She abandoned all thoughts of retreat and prepared to take one last Zombie's life, hoping her sacrifice would buy a few precious seconds for those greedy Fellows lingering nearby.
At that moment, a flash of blue light streaked through the air.
Though he had never received formal training, using the Adamantium Shield felt instinctual. With a flick of his wrist, he swung the shield in a wide arc, cleaving through five Zombies at once before it arced back through the air.
Zheng Yifan extended his left arm and caught the Adamantium Shield as it returned, positioning it in front of Han Rui.
"This is a man's job; women should just watch," Zheng Yifan said with a faint smile, raising his shield in front of him and charging a few steps toward the Zombie.
Han Rui stood behind Zheng Yifan, watching this man who was several years older than him. He felt an inexplicable heat on his face, as if a warm current was flowing through him.
As Zheng Yifan advanced, his muscles tightened and contracted, the body enhanced by the Super Soldier Serum far exceeding the limits of an ordinary person. Every movement he made carried immense destructive power.
The terrifying face of the Zombie loomed before him, its decaying features marred by age spots, with clumps of blood caked at the corners of its mouth, a testament to its cruelty and ruthlessness.
His stomach twisted slightly; he could only endure it and squint as he approached.
Mixed Martial Arts, Aikido, Taekwondo... all were futile efforts. Any technique that might bring him into contact with the Zombie was merely asking for trouble—a suicidal act.
"Roar! Roar!" During the battle, the Zombie had already caught the scent of humanity. Although it wasn't as enticing as blood, it still served as a guide for the Zombie.
A dozen Zombies quickened their pace and lunged toward Zheng Yifan.
At this moment, Zheng Yifan had no weapon in hand—only a shield—and facing the Zombies left him feeling vulnerable.
Now he understood; in movies, Captain America looked cool and heroic because he was the protagonist, facing human opponents and could easily find firearms lying around.
But here he was, without even a handy weapon. Engaging in close combat with Zombies was nothing short of seeking death.
"Here!" Sensing Zheng Yifan's predicament, Han Rui threw his dagger toward the Zombie.
He didn't have confidence that it would land directly in Zheng Yifan's hand.
The dagger flew forward, its blade slicing through the air like lightning, aimed at one Zombie's cheek.
In perfect sync, a flash of white light zipped past his ear. Zheng Yifan instinctively reached out with his right hand and caught the dagger, thrusting it forward in one smooth motion.
The dagger pierced through the Zombie's skull; he twisted his wrist and pulled it out. The brain matter inside the Zombie's head had turned to mush as it convulsed on the ground, clawing aimlessly at nothing.
Even with its brain destroyed, the Zombie's organs continued to function; it would only stop moving once its body rotted away from lack of brain activity.
This reality made Zheng Yifan wary of getting too close to the Zombies. After all, if they managed to grab him even slightly, he might truly find himself unable to survive.
With the dagger in hand, his body moved with newfound speed. He weaved between Zombies while using his shield effectively. It was as if he could predict their movements, always managing to block their attacks.
In the back, Han Rui watched as Zheng Yifan charged into the midst of the Zombies, a short knife dancing across their bodies. He either smashed their skulls or severed their heads, leaving them to convulse helplessly.
The speed had reached a point where only shadows could be seen. Ordinary Zombies were unable to get close at all.
"Kill!" At this point in the battle, Zheng Yifan felt his blood boiling, a slight tingling sensation in his arms, as if his nerves were experiencing a mild numbness.
The more intense it became, the more power he could unleash.
The strength granted by the Super Soldier Serum had not been fully realized before, lying dormant within his cells. But now, in the heat of battle, that boiling blood released all its potential.
For a moment, Zheng Yifan appeared surrounded by a faint blue smoke, like a celestial being, and the Zombies before him gradually became familiar.
It was the automatic memory judgment enhanced by the Super Soldier Serum. Almost instinctively, each of Zheng Yifan's attacks targeted their joints and cervical vertebrae.
As long as he severed the cervical vertebrae, the Zombies would completely cease their convulsions, as if the energy provided by the Zombie Crystal was forcibly interrupted.
Han Rui observed Zheng Yifan's movements closely from behind. He stealthily gripped a mop handle and jabbed at the still-twitching Zombies on the ground, waiting for them to stop before using a clothes hanger found in the Luxury Box to extract the Zombie Crystal s hidden outside their cervical vertebrae.
Those crystals resembled tumors nestled within the Zombies' necks. Once the Zombies lost their lives and their bodies began to decay into liquid, the Zombie Crystal s would slowly reveal themselves.
