“Buzz! Buzz!” The alarm at the Hope Gathering Place shook the ground, waking the Survivors from their slumber. Rubbing their sleepy eyes, they felt a sudden tightening in their hearts as the loud siren blared.
This was a Level One alert, signaling a nationwide mobilization order.
What did nationwide mobilization mean?
It meant that everyone, from the elderly to toddlers just learning to walk, could potentially be called into battle at any moment. Members of the Explorer Alliance within the Gathering Place collectively entered a wartime state; no one was allowed to continue exploring. Teams formed into larger units, and those units combined into legions, all responding to orders.
Of course, they would also briefly enjoy a temporary Military Merit system, allowing them to exchange for anything they desired from the military supply chain. If they didn’t find what they wanted, they could even customize their own Psychic Weapons.
After all, there were plenty of good things available in the Gathering Place. Even if you used Military Merit to seek companionship, there would certainly be someone willing to entertain you, perhaps even providing some food or other amenities.
In the Hope Gathering Place, Military Merit was the most robust currency for exchanging power within the military. This was a rare opportunity not to be missed.

As long as they achieved victory in battle, they could gain military rights, becoming the guardians of the Gathering Place and earning the privilege to exchange Essence. Moreover, if they fell in battle, this right could be passed on to their families, allowing them to enjoy the glory their loved ones had earned in life.

Each arrangement was the culmination of months of thought by Zheng Yifan. He had little experience dealing with Zombies; what he faced were merely numbers. Compared to the total Zombie activity in Hansui City, his situation was insignificant. Who knew how many Zombies had gathered in Hansui City? It was located on the edge of an economically developed area, while further north lay several Large Cities where millions or even billions of Zombies could potentially emerge.
The strategy had been set, and almost no one raised any objections. They responded calmly, with Zheng Yifan determining all the major directions while the specifics were left to them.
However, a dispute arose during the execution of the plan to intercept the Advanced Zombies.
The main point of contention was Pu Qiang. In Jiang Direction, he was the primary defensive force, yet Zheng Yifan wanted to personally lead the Guard Camp warriors to intercept the enemy.
This was simply an insult! When had Pu Qiang reached a point where he could only passively take hits?
His loud voice echoed, shaking the entire Ecological Sphere. Unfortunately for him, he ultimately could not win against Zheng Yifan, who silenced him with a single statement.
"Don't talk nonsense if you haven't become a Fourth-Stage Esper!" That one sentence left Pu Qiang speechless; not only was he not a Fourth Stage, but he hadn't even reached Third Stage. Although he utilized superior Essence and had the potential for powerful evolution, it did not affect his speed, which relied on his own efforts.
Were there any Superpowered Individuals in Gathering Place? Zheng Yifan didn't know; he had never encountered one. However, many Second-Stage Espers were already touching the edge of that threshold, and he believed that given them a few months, they could cross it.
After the meeting concluded, Gathering Place mobilized completely. Each department operated at maximum speed; hardly anyone walked slowly; even the slowest were jogging.
Efficiency was paramount now. Zheng Yifan led five hundred warriors from the Guard Camp into the central area of Gathering Place.
These were his strongest fighters. Their Superpowers might not be the most powerful, but their distribution was absolutely comprehensive.
Zheng Yifan even wanted them all to enter Superpower Academy for further training. Unfortunately, Wu Yingzhou and Shi Laonian had yet to finalize methods for cultivating Superpowered Individuals and their combat techniques.
Each person's Superpower varied, leading to different combat styles that required planned training. This needed a significant amount of time, and what Zheng Yifan lacked most was time.
"Leader! All personnel have assembled; there are five hundred individuals present," Li Ning reported after counting. He stepped back to allow Zheng Yifan to take charge.
"Set off. The Han Sui City Gathering Place across the river may be under attack by Advanced Zombies."
"From now on, execute the decapitation operation. Aim to kill Advanced Zombies; Low-Level Zombies can be selectively ignored, but absolutely do not let yourselves be surrounded by Zombies."
"And most importantly, do not underestimate them, as there may be intelligent ones among the Zombies."
After issuing the orders, Zheng Yifan boarded a Hummer Dragon and quietly closed his eyes.
The others climbed into large Armored Transport Vehicles. The First Division still had a solid foundation, leaving behind plenty of good equipment, and these Armored Transport Vehicles were among them.
As he silently rested with his eyes closed, his thoughts drifted back to the time he advanced to Fourth-Stage Esper.
It was a cold night when Zheng Yifan finally gathered enough Zombie Crystal s—one million to be exact—and trembling, returned to the real world to use them for evolution.
There were no Character Cards, nor any choices; instead, he entered a mysterious space where time seemed to lose its meaning. His Storage Space expanded tenfold, becoming an enormous area that was almost impossible to fill. Then a woman appeared before him—a very ordinary-looking woman.
She resembled the girl next door, simply watching Zheng Yifan quietly. Suddenly, a strange memory surfaced in his mind: it was the memory of a woman from an ordinary human tribe during a torrential downpour that brought news of Zombies.
At that time, humanity did not have as many defensive measures as they did now. Apart from Superpowered Individuals, they had no means of defense. All humans lived in tribes focused solely on survival.
When the Zombies attacked, they moved with purpose and even employed tactics. The tribes suffered significant losses; in the end, only a few Superpowered Individuals managed to survive.
It was then that a girl awakened her Superpower for the first time. She did not need Essence or Essence Fruits; she simply absorbed Vital Energy from the earth and became a Superpowered Individual. Her ability was shaping; she could mold many things. That was her happiest moment—helping her tribe defend against the Zombies.
The memories were hazy and fragmented. Zheng Yifan could not tell how long he watched, but nearly all the scenes involved battles. He observed powerful Superpowered Individuals seeking their paths to evolution and defeating formidable Zombies. They lacked technology and culture; even their intelligence seemed to emerge only briefly, as if they suddenly gained awareness in an instant of Vitality Emergence.
It was these memories that allowed Zheng Yifan to encounter many bizarre Zombies, creatures that often possessed strange abilities and could ambush him in the most unexpected places.
They could even kill him outright.
It felt like watching an intense movie, and Zheng Yifan had no idea how much time had passed; he only knew that when he woke up, merely ten minutes had gone by.
Yet, the scenes of battle had numbered in the hundreds. In the end, he heard the most crucial piece of information.
"Strive, train, the world is one. Dragon Balls, return. And finally, the last two words: Fifth Level."
According to Zheng Yifan's understanding, this was the madness he had experienced over the past few months, and now it was the first step into that madness.
He wanted to see if there were truly so many variables among those Zombies. This was his first official battle.
Before this harsh winter, it was merely a signal of the apocalypse approaching.
