A voluptuous Nurse held a towel, wiping the sweat from Old Hou's forehead. Drops of sweat continuously emerged, and white steam rose from his body.
Old Hou had no time to admire the beauty; the scalpel in his hand moved faster than Light Speed. The wound on the bed healed instantly, followed by rapid suturing.
The one doing the suturing was a woman whose Superpower was sewing. However, she was more than capable of stepping in as a doctor temporarily, as her Superpower of threading needles was incredibly powerful. Once she set the method of needle and thread transmission in her mind, she could stitch up wounds at lightning speed.
The surgery progressed quickly, but Old Hou's Superpower couldn't be sustained for long. It consumed too much energy, and moreover, he had yet to explore how to use his Psychic Weapon. After all, his Superpower only materialized into a scalpel; there was no need to complicate matters further.
Warriors were brought in one after another, representing those who fought valiantly on the battlefield and were injured.
Many more had died without a trace, as Zombies would devour even the corpses. Those classified as Second-Stage Espers would be sent to the back for the Zombie Leader's enjoyment.
On the city wall, Zheng Yifan watched with frustration boiling over; his anger had reached its peak. However, there was nothing he could do as the Leader Zombie hid in the distance, giving him no chance.
"Where's the Glide umbrella?" he roared. Zheng Yifan hurled his Adamantium Shield repeatedly while the Superpowered Individuals around him fought desperately.
The battle had reached a fever pitch; flames could no longer hold back the Zombies. They came with destructive force to punish the entire world.
"Leader, it's ready," several Superpowered Individuals behind Zheng Yifan quickly equipped him with a full set of Glide gear.
Only two or three minutes remained. The silhouettes of Second and Third Tier Zombies were already visible on the city wall. Even more terrifying were some Third-Stage Zombies smashing against the wall; each strike echoed like thunder.
"Prepare for takeoff!" Zheng Yifan commanded. The formation around him maintained its position as they launched him back into the air.
Then they continued to fight. The battlefield had become a meat grinder; there was no way to ignore it. As Zheng Yifan soared above, he saw flames shooting from the wall—those were from reinforced bunkers equipped with large Flamethrowers. The flames blazed fiercely but could not withstand the sheer number of Zombies flooding in. Second and Third Tier Zombies ignored these flames and charged forward.
Zheng Yifan had to quickly lock onto a target. This time he wasn't looking for peripheral targets but aimed at the powerful Leader Zombies in the center. Although these Leader Zombies were formidable, they had one advantage: their surroundings were filled with numerous high-quality Zombies. If he could force them to use their sonic attack, it would wipe out a large area of Zombies.
Fighting for survival was commonplace on this battlefield; moreover, with such high stakes now, taking down one leader could eliminate nearly a hundred thousand Zombies. There were still six legitimate Leader Zombies left; those under control were irrelevant since they had been stripped of their intelligence and could no longer coordinate the Zombie horde effectively.
The smell of blood and flesh in the surroundings had become so intense that it felt almost suffocating. As soon as a large-scale death occurred at the center of the battlefield, where the Zombie Leader was located, the Zombies would be attracted by the distant blood. They were incapable of discerning strategies and could not coordinate with one another; at most, a dozen Zombies would scatter as one or two began to hunt.
However, that was precisely when humanity would counterattack. Disorganized Zombies were weak and could not stand against humans in battle.
Soaring through the air, Zheng Yifan had his sights set on the strongest Zombie. It stood over a meter tall, entirely black, and exuded immense strength.
It was considered the strongest because this Leader Zombie controlled the most subordinates and occupied the safest position. Aside from the empty void in a Zombie's mind, there was no chance for an attack against it.
Even Zheng Yifan only had one opportunity to strike. It was fleeting; any lapse in concentration could allow this Zombie to evade him, leading to a fatal consequence. There were too many Zombies nearby.
Zheng Yifan felt like he was trying to extract chestnuts from a fire, with two Fourth-Stage Zombies acting like bodyguards to ensure that the Leader Zombie remained unharmed.
The black Zombie possessed formidable defenses; its color represented strength among Zombies because it secreted a unique substance that reinforced its skin.
The entire body of this Zombie was black, and as Zheng Yifan hovered in the air, he searched for that fleeting opportunity.
There had to be some weakness, Zheng Yifan reminded himself repeatedly.
Below, the Zombie Leader swayed its body slowly, observing its subordinates in battle.
Not a sound escaped, but Zheng Yifan knew that its orders had been given. The Zombies on the battlefield continuously shifted positions to replace those eliminated by the warriors of Hope Gathering Place.
The thunderous storm from the direction of the city gate had dissipated; such overwhelming power could not be sustained for long. Hope Gathering Place had little chance of turning the tide. Nevertheless, the Bloodbath Legion could not be recalled because Zombies were approaching from Hansui City. Even with a river separating them, they still needed to exert maximum effort in defense.
Zheng Yifan could only rely on himself here; perhaps that was how he felt—like trying to extract chestnuts from a fire.
As he hovered, Zheng Yifan noticed that the Puppet Zombies needed to feed at regular intervals.
They continuously consumed the corpses of Second-Stage Espers sent from the front lines. Despite his heartache, Zheng Yifan had to endure it.
He even watched helplessly as several members of the Guard Camp were sent over and slowly devoured.
Even so, she had to endure, slowly watching the Zombie Leader tear apart the flesh of the warriors, swallowing it bite by bite. That gaping maw could easily swallow a person's head, with a bright red tongue continuously curling within. In the air, one could even see the corrosive saliva dripping from its mouth.
Every time it devoured a Superpowered Individual, a black liquid would seep from its body, gradually replenishing its head and spreading toward its mouth.
Clearly, it had not yet completed its evolution. Zheng Yifan seemed to see a glimmer of hope as he followed the direction of the black liquid and caught sight of the Zombie's mouth. Though it was fearsome and terrifying, there was no doubt that the flesh inside appeared quite fresh and red, even if it was somewhat dried out. Coupled with that corrosive liquid, it looked even more horrifying.
But Zheng Yifan knew this was the Puppet Zombie's weakness, for only this area remained uncovered by the black liquid.
Inside the Zombie's body lay the Leader Zombie; that was where it concealed itself.
Grinding his teeth and making up his mind, Zheng Yifan slowly released the fastening device of his Glide parachute, letting his body slide down rapidly.
Below him was that Puppet Zombie. In a moment of clarity, Zheng Yifan felt as if he were watching an ancient martial arts drama from the real world—City-Slaying Sword, Peerless Sword—like an immortal descending from above to strike at its enemies.
But now the weapon was different; it was a spear—the Silver Spear—an armament from In Calamity. It was a divine weapon with a spirit of its own, shining brilliantly under Zheng Yifan's command as it shot straight toward the Zombie's head.
The Puppet Zombie was tearing at a Superpowered Individual's thigh, stuffing it into its mouth.
Zheng Yifan remembered that young face; he was just an honest boy from his Guard Camp, barely in his teens. His future had once been bright, but in this damned world and this cursed battle, he had lost his life.
Last night, Zheng Yifan had shared drinks and food with him, enjoying a meal cooked in a pot.
And now? They were worlds apart, helplessly watching as this boy was devoured by the Puppet Zombie.
The rage in his heart felt like it would explode; his eyes were bloodshot.
Battle. Slaughter.
Zheng Yifan wanted nothing more than to kill with abandon.
He fell rapidly from the sky; in just a few fleeting thoughts, he had plunged straight down. The Glide parachute floated above him, with only a thin rope still attached to his body—not securing him but originally intended to assist those on the ground in ascending.
The umbrella only stayed in place under the pull of this rope, and in mid-air, Zheng Yifan adjusted his angle with the force.
He had to insert it into the trachea without any mistakes; otherwise, it would be a matter of life and death. The Zombie was enveloped in a black liquid, making it impossible to attack directly. The only target was the fresh red flesh inside.
Now was the best opportunity.
Zheng Yifan did not hesitate. He slowly aimed at the throat and could see rows of jagged, tooth-like structures continuously chewing on the Superpowered Individual, swallowing down the green liquid that oozed out, turning the body into liquid before it could be fully consumed, then flowing downward.
There lay the Leader Zombie.
That was Zheng Yifan's target, without a doubt. Like an immortal's ultimate strike, the Silver Spear slowly slid into the trachea, then into the esophagus, and finally towards the inner teeth.
Zheng Yifan had never anticipated that the Puppet Zombie would be so difficult to deal with; the Leader Zombie inside was protected so thoroughly.
When the Silver Spear made contact with the Leader Zombie, Zheng Yifan realized that it would be hard to achieve a single decisive blow. The sensation in his hand told him that his spear was caught on something. The immense force was almost unbearable.
Then he watched as the Puppet Zombie gradually transformed into a soft liquid, green corpse fluid continuously secreting.
Suddenly, he felt an unexpected vibration.
