Kneeling for half an hour was hardly a challenge for Xin Yao, a well-trained shadow guard. It felt no different from the times he quietly hid in the corners of the palace, silently watching over the princess.
Xin Yao kept the princess's orders in mind, lowering his head and fixing his gaze on the ground, silently counting the seconds in his heart.
With each passing minute, he remained as focused as he was when executing any task.
When the half-hour mark arrived, Xin Yao stood up swiftly, his posture agile and light. He quickly changed into a clean set of clothes and silently approached the bed, gazing intently at Yun Qingyu.
At that moment, Yun Qingyu lay with her eyes closed, her long eyelashes casting delicate shadows on her fair cheeks, as if she had already fallen into a deep sleep.
The sleeping princess resembled a piece of exquisite porcelain, her skin flawless and white, glowing softly in the morning light. Her stunning beauty appeared even more radiant, captivating Xin Yao to the point of distraction.
Xin Yao slightly lowered his gaze, standing by the bed lost in thought. He wrestled with himself: "Should I sleep on the princess's bed? Or should I go sleep on the couch outside?"
Just then, Yun Qingyu suddenly turned over, unconsciously creating enough space for Xin Yao to lie down beside her.
A jolt ran through Xin Yao's heart, like a startled deer. He quickly made up his mind and gently lay down next to Yun Qingyu, moving as softly as if afraid to disturb a butterfly resting among flowers.
The princess had previously said he could sleep here. Once settled, Xin Yao maintained his hands resting on his abdomen, a standard and obedient sleeping position for him.
However, as drowsiness began to take hold, his body seemed to move of its own accord. Gradually, he found himself inching closer to the warmth beside him.
His broad hand unconsciously rested on Yun Qingyu's waist, and soon after, he gently pulled himself closer, wrapping his arms around her slender waist as if holding the most precious treasure in the world. He inhaled the familiar scent that brought him immense comfort and quickly succumbed to deep sleep.
Yun Qingyu had not truly fallen asleep. Suddenly, she opened her eyes, a hint of surprise flashing across them, but she made no move, simply savoring Xin Yao's embrace. The sensation was peculiar yet pleasant; the warmth enveloping her brought an inexplicable sense of security.
A slight smile curled at the corners of her mouth as she closed her eyes again, drifting back into slumber.
The night passed quickly in warmth and tranquility. Just as dawn began to break, Xin Yao stirred awake.
He lowered his gaze gently, looking down at Yun Qingyu with tenderness. Seeing that she was still fast asleep, he carefully got up, moving quietly to wash and change in preparation for court. At that moment, Jing Lan hurried over, a tense expression on his face as he reported, "Your Highness, Prince Jin has killed the princess."
Upon hearing this news, Yun Qingyu instinctively turned to look at Xin Yao beside her. He remained with his head bowed, his expression unchanged, like a calm lake—deep and mysterious.
Yun Qingyu withdrew her gaze and turned to Jing Lan, frowning slightly as she asked in a serious tone, "What exactly happened?"
Jing Lan quickly lowered his voice to respond, "It is said that Prince Jing spent the night with the princess. When he woke up today, she was not by his side. Suspicious, he got up only to discover the princess in an affair with another man. In a fit of rage, he killed both the princess and that man."
