It was clearly a once-evolved Mutated Zombie, its blood-red eyes looking incredibly ferocious.
However, it was much smaller, resembling a boy of about thirteen or fourteen years old.
Standing at less than five feet three inches, combined with its sneaky and cautious footsteps, it appeared utterly creepy.
After its first evolution, Chu Donglin's field of vision had expanded to sixty meters.
Later, after consuming a Zombie Dog and an Energy Crystal from a Mutated Female Zombie, although its strength and speed had increased somewhat, the range of vision did not grow significantly.
So when Chu Donglin spotted this Mutated Zombie, the creature should have been able to see him as well.
However, Chu Donglin was currently standing on a pedestrian bridge, surrounded by wandering Zombies moving about, effectively concealing himself within the crowd.
The Mutated Zombie appeared at the street corner, with only a few overturned cars around it, making it a particularly large target.
Thus, Chu Donglin noticed it at a glance, while it had yet to detect him.
Observing the Mutated Zombie, Chu Donglin thought for a moment. He held his knife in his left hand and picked up the girl Shishi with his right, walking over to a car by the roadside.
He opened the car door and placed the girl inside. Although he knew she wouldn’t move around recklessly, he still solemnly instructed her, “Don’t run off. Wait for me to come back, okay?”
The girl stared at him blankly without responding.
Chu Donglin didn’t expect her to react. After giving his instructions, he left the car and closed the door behind him.
Then he controlled the group of wandering Zombies nearby to move away, clearing the area around the car.
While the girl was beside him, he could control the surrounding Zombies to avoid attacking Shishi.
But once he engaged in fierce combat with the Mutated Zombie, Chu Donglin would have to go all out. At any moment, various unforeseen circumstances could sever his control over that group of Zombies.
Without first finding a safe place to set the girl down, things could get chaotic if those wandering Zombies near Shishi lost control.
After securing the girl in a safe spot, Chu Donglin charged after the Mutated Zombie, wielding his Machete.
There was an inexplicable sense of awareness among the Mutated Zombies; once they got close enough, they could sense each other. So, the moment Chu Donglin jumped out from behind a car, the Mutated Zombie was already aware of his presence.
The two First-Stage Zombies exchanged a glance, and the Mutated Zombie went into a frenzy.
“Roar…”
With a beast-like roar, the child-like Mutated Zombie lunged forward with ferocity.
This Mutated Zombie wasn't particularly fast; compared to the two Zombies Chu Donglin had taken down earlier, it was significantly weaker and only slightly matched his speed.
Initially, judging by its size, Chu Donglin thought it was an agile Zombie, which is why he had prepared to meet it with his Machete.
However, upon realizing that this fellow was not an agile Zombie, Chu Donglin grinned and pulled out his gun.
Bang—
With the shot fired at such close range, even someone like Chu Donglin, who had never handled a gun before, couldn't miss.
The Mutated Zombie let out a howl as one of its arms was shattered.
Though the handgun's power wasn't immense, it proved effective against flesh and blood.
Typically, one shot would create a Blood Hole. If he had used a light machine gun, he could have turned this First-Stage Mutated Zombie into mere fragments in an instant.
Not hesitating to expend bullets, Chu Donglin fired three shots at the Zombie, completely crippling its ability to fight back. He then tossed the gun aside and charged forward decisively with his Machete.
The full force of his body erupted in an instant, and the Mutated Zombie was sent flying by Chu Donglin's blade. Its bones shattered completely as it crashed heavily against a car behind it, falling motionless.
"…What? You think you can fight me? You're still too green."
Chu Donglin chuckled as he approached, wielding his Machete.
This was the difference between him and the Ordinary Zombies; he had intelligence and could use tools and weapons. In a one-on-one confrontation, Chu Donglin could easily overpower these First-Stage Zombies.
With two guns at his disposal, the outcome of the battle was already a foregone conclusion.
He stepped on the shoulder of the Mutated Zombie, looking coldly into its eyes, ready to smash its skull with his blade.
However, at that moment, the gaunt Mutated Zombie suddenly lifted its head, its Blood-red Eyes fixated on Chu Donglin.
In that instant, a strange blood light flashed in the Mutated Zombie's eyes.
Then Chu Donglin let out a terrible scream, feeling as if his head had been pierced by needles. He staggered back several steps, clutching his head and crying out in pain.
"Ahhhh!!! My head! Ahhhh!!! Damn it! Damn it! Damn it!"
As he screamed, he frantically struck at the surrounding cars, streetlights, and anything else he could hit, trying to vent the agony in his mind.
He felt a consciousness invading his brain, attempting to control his body and spirit.
As the crisis hit, he completely lost control, every hair on his body standing on end as chills ran down his spine. In a frenzy, he attacked everything around him.
It wasn't until the tide of pain in his mind receded that Chu Donglin gasped for breath as if he had just run a thousand meters, collapsing weakly to the ground.
He lifted his head and looked at the distorted cars he had smashed around him. Then he saw the pile of shredded flesh that had once been the Mutated Zombie, reduced to a heap by his own madness.
Damn! Even the mindless Zombies have learned to control others? And they're controlling Zombies of the same level? What a joke!
Standing in front of the pile of shredded flesh, Chu Donglin gasped, still shaken. Earlier, when he was stimulated by that Mental Power, he had nearly been controlled by this Zombie, and this realization startled him.
He had thought that this fellow, with his thin appearance, would be an agile Mutated Zombie, but it turned out he was a controlling type.
Chu Donglin could bet that this type of Zombie had an absolute advantage over Ordinary Zombies in terms of control, far surpassing his own shallow manipulation... Although when it came to close combat, he could easily overpower the other.
It was clear that he still lacked experience; it seemed he needed to be more cautious in future encounters. Who knows what bizarre abilities these Zombies have evolved? One wrong move could lead to tragedy.
Chu Donglin rummaged through the pile of flesh and found an Energy Crystal, then picked up the gun he had tossed aside and returned to the girl, Shishi.
Seeing her still sitting there in a daze inside the vehicle, Chu Donglin let out a sigh of relief.
He consumed the Energy Crystal, feeling the energy surge throughout his body, and searched the car for a cloth to wipe the blood off his blade.
"Alright, let's continue on our way and see if we can find a clothing store nearby."
After cleaning the bloodstained Machete, Chu Donglin slung it over his shoulder and carried Shishi as they walked toward the next street.
