At dawn, Chu Donglin got out of bed.
Zombies do not require much sleep; what he referred to as sleep was merely putting his body into a standby mode, similar to a computer, to conserve energy. By the time it was nearly light, Chu Donglin climbed out of bed.
After getting dressed, he cautiously made his way out of the room. Chu Donglin first went up to the rooftop to assess the situation. Since he planned to grow vegetables on the roof, he needed to figure out how to create a Vegetable Garden.
However, when he reached the rooftop, he discovered that someone had already implemented the idea of growing vegetables there.
On the empty rooftop, there were already two small Vegetable Gardens.
Although it had been a long time since anyone had visited this place due to the apocalypse, the green cabbages and cucumbers in the Vegetable Gardens were thriving remarkably well.
There were also some tomatoes and other vegetables that appeared to be well taken care of.
Chu Donglin thought for a moment and felt that just for the girl alone, the vegetables in these two Vegetable Gardens would be more than enough.
Since the original owner was no longer around, he felt no guilt in claiming these two Vegetable Gardens for himself.
Well, now that there were Vegetable Gardens, perhaps it was time to consider getting some chickens to raise?
Deciding to go for it, Chu Donglin returned inside, grabbed his Machete and gun, and prepared to head out. Generally speaking, while there were chickens for sale at the market, in this apocalypse, those chickens had likely been caught and eaten by Zombies.
But one could always hope that there might be an exception somewhere.
Although Chu Donglin knew there was a chicken farm on Ronghua Road, it was too far from here. Before heading there, he planned to try his luck at a few nearby markets; if that didn’t work out, he would then go to the chicken farm on Ronghua Road.
On his way out, he could also take down a couple of Mutated Zombies and consume their crystals to accumulate energy for evolution.
Ever since encountering that bizarre group of Mutated Zombies, Chu Donglin had been increasingly eager for his evolution into the Second Stage, hoping to awaken some strange abilities.
He did not expect to awaken any powerful superpowers like controlling earth or manipulating lightning; he would be satisfied with just one or two decent Abilities… preferably something related to flight.
Flying would be so cool to think about.
Moreover, if I could fly, moving around this city would be much more convenient.
After all, due to the chaos that erupted during the apocalypse, the streets near the city center are filled with cars that have crashed and are now scattered everywhere, severely blocking the roads.
In some places, Chu Donglin could climb and jump over obstacles, but in others, he had to take a detour. If he could fly, how exhilarating it would be to soar right over them—he hadn't even begun to evolve yet, and here he was lost in daydreams.
When he pushed open the door to his home, he saw a girl standing at the entrance, staring blankly at him.
In the cool morning breeze, the girl was only wearing a thin nightgown, looking frail and delicate. Her vacant gaze and doll-like features evoked a sense of pity.
"Uh... Shishi, what are you doing standing here?"
Chu Donglin was taken aback for a moment before walking over and picking her up. "Running around without any clothes on will give you a chill."
He carried her back into the bedroom, helped her out of the nightgown, and dressed her in the white Gothic Lolita dress from before.
Looking at Shishi's blank expression, Chu Donglin sighed. "You really need to start talking to me more."
Shaking his head, he picked up a comb and began to brush her hair.
It was no easy task.
As it was his first time brushing a girl's hair, Chu Donglin exerted great effort to untangle her knots without hurting her.
Next came washing her face and brushing her teeth. After demonstrating several times while gesturing along the way, he finally managed to teach the dazed Shishi how to wash her face and brush her teeth. But why was she holding onto the toothbrush so tightly? Did she really forget everything?
Chu Donglin sighed as he took the toothbrush from her hand. "Alright, you don't need to brush for that long; that's enough. Now let's rinse your mouth with clean water and get rid of the foam... Remember, don’t swallow any water this time either."
He earnestly reminded her, worried that she might mindlessly swallow the toothpaste foam—then there would be trouble.
Looking at Chu Donglin's serious gaze, the girl nodded blankly, and only then did he hand her the toothbrush.
After the girl finally finished brushing her teeth with great difficulty, Chu Donglin checked the time and realized that over an hour had passed.
"Wow, I can't believe so much time has gone by."
Chu Donglin sighed in disbelief, picked the girl up, and carried her back to the living room, placing her on the sofa as usual.
"I'm going out for a bit. You stay here at home and don’t wander off, okay?"
The girl stared at him blankly, showing no reaction.
Chu Donglin shrugged helplessly and turned to walk into the kitchen, mumbling, "I really don’t know what’s going on with you. It seems like you’ve forgotten everything from before? Seriously… you can’t even brush your teeth. Shishi, you’re not really losing it, are you?"
He first prepared a bowl of instant noodles and handed it to the girl, who sat on the sofa munching on it along with some bread for breakfast.
Then Chu Donglin took out the whetstone he had brought back yesterday and pulled out a machete, sitting down in the living room to start sharpening it.
Amidst the harsh sound of grinding metal, Chu Donglin engaged in casual conversation with the girl.
Although he knew Shishi wouldn’t respond, he still didn’t want the room to fall silent. He hoped that through verbal communication, he could thaw the frozen heart of the girl sooner rather than later.
For Chu Donglin, having someone to talk to in such a closed environment was quite nice.
"Back when I was at home, my dad usually did the sharpening. Sometimes he would ask me for help. Yeah, he’d have me hold the whetstone so it wouldn’t slip when he applied too much pressure."
"During holidays and festivals, I would help him when he was butchering chickens… uh… Shishi, have you ever seen a chicken being killed? First, you hold the rooster upside down tightly by its legs and body to keep it from moving around. Then you cut its neck to let all the blood flow into a bowl that’s already prepared."
"At that moment, the chicken would struggle. If you didn’t hold it tightly enough, blood would splatter everywhere. One time we encountered a particularly tough chicken; even after we drained all its blood, when we put it on the ground, it still struggled and almost ran away."
"Hahaha… we were all startled! That chicken had such incredible vitality."
"Hey... sometimes I think about it, this world is really strange. I used to be someone who had never even killed a chicken, and now I have to go kill Zombies. Hah, this damn apocalypse."
"By the way, Shishi, are you guys locals from Pear City? Where did you and Uncle Li live before? Why haven't I seen your mom?"
They chatted aimlessly until the Girl had finished her breakfast. Only then did Chu Donglin sharpen the blade of his Machete, preparing to head out with the Machete and firearms. "Stay at home and wait for me, don't run around. I'll bring you something delicious when I get back."
With that, Chu Donglin closed the door and left the room.
On the sofa, the Girl stared blankly at the closed door for a long time before she foolishly said, "Goodbye, Dad."
However, Chu Donglin could no longer hear her; by that time, he had already arrived on another street, leisurely basking in the sunlight while walking among the Zombies.
In this apocalypse, being a Zombie indeed provided a significant advantage. At least aside from those Mutated Zombies, he wouldn't be attacked by Ordinary Zombies.
This was a privilege that countless people envied.
Just think about all the food in supermarkets, the medicines in pharmacies, the clothes in clothing stores... and all sorts of other random items just sitting there for Chu Donglin to take at will without worrying about being besieged by Zombies.
Now consider how other human Survivors lived their lives like mice, cautiously searching for food and avoiding Zombies, while he could swagger through a crowd of Zombies... Hey... with comparison comes disparity; this sense of superiority was simply exhilarating.
But soon enough, Chu Donglin couldn't smile anymore.
Looking ahead at a Mutated Zombie swaying at the street corner, the corners of his mouth twitched as he instinctively took two steps back.
It was an enormous White Wolf, standing two meters tall. From a distance, it looked like a fantastical monster straight out of a movie—massive like a mountain and exuding an intimidating presence.
Its body didn't have the foul odor or wounds typical of most Zombies; on the contrary, this White Wolf's fur appeared quite beautiful and majestic.
But which country's wolf President was this strong? What a joke! Did turning into a Zombie also make them grow larger?
Just as Chu Donglin spotted the White Wolf, it noticed him as well.
The massive wolf's head turned, its blood-red eyes glaring fiercely at Chu Donglin. The two zombies locked eyes from several dozen meters apart for a long moment, before the White Wolf let out a low growl and casually turned away, completely ignoring Chu Donglin.
But Chu Donglin stood frozen, unable to move.
It was the pressure of levels!
This White Wolf had at least evolved to the Second Stage of a Mutated Zombie. Faced with it, Chu Donglin felt no greed whatsoever; instead, a chill ran down his spine, and he instinctively wanted to flee.
He was certain that if he truly clashed with this White Wolf, it could easily tear him apart—just like he would with an Ordinary Zombie, without breaking a sweat.
"Damn... where the hell did such a huge wolf come from in the city? Did it escape from the zoo?"
Chu Donglin thought for a moment and realized there was indeed a zoo not too far from here.
But if one wolf could be transformed by the virus into this monstrous form, what about those fiercer tigers and lions? Would they be even more terrifying?
