The moment he swallowed the crystal, Chu Donglin's body trembled, a scorching heat rising directly from his abdomen, with countless streams of energy flowing into his limbs and bones.
That sensation was akin to soaking in a hot spring, making Chu Donglin feel drowsy and lethargic.
His parched body desperately absorbed this energy, and visibly, his withered form began to slowly swell back to its usual state.
Ten minutes later, Chu Donglin walked out of the supermarket doors, feeling refreshed. Compared to his previous emaciated appearance, he seemed like a different person. All the wounds on his body had healed completely, and he no longer had to drag around an injured body.
Such recovery power was astonishing.
However, this remarkable healing speed did not come without a cost; at least thirty percent of the energy from the Energy Crystal had been used to repair Chu Donglin's body.
This ratio was quite painful for Chu Donglin.
"Well, it can't be helped. Out with the old, in with the new. You can't catch wolves without letting go of the kids; you can't be a rogue without losing your integrity. Thirty percent is thirty percent. There will be bread, and there will be crystals... Let's go find our next target!"
With a steel hammer slung over his shoulder, Chu Donglin swaggered through the streets accompanied by a group of tall and strong Zombies, heading towards their next target.
The next target was an alley on the adjacent street.
After observing for some time, Chu Donglin had roughly figured out the distribution of Zombies in the area. Strangely enough, he discovered that the vast majority of Mutated Zombies exhibited a tendency to return to their nests.
Most of the time, these Zombies might wander around searching for prey, but when they wanted to rest, they would return to their chosen hideouts.
These hideouts were bizarre; some Zombies chose supermarkets while others opted for alleys. He even witnessed a Childlike Zombie using a trash can on the street as its nest, curling up inside it.
During nearly a week’s time, although Chu Donglin had not ventured out, he had been quietly observing the situation nearby from his balcony.
Based on the roars and signs of battle from the zombies, Chu Donglin had already figured out the distribution of zombies in the nearby streets, which allowed him to swagger out confidently.
Knowing oneself and knowing the enemy ensures victory in every battle; this is an unchanging truth throughout the ages.
Although he had lost his machete and two handguns, Chu Donglin had found sharper weapons at his disposal.
With over twenty towering zombies at his command, it was almost effortless to deal with those intellectually deficient First-Stage Mutated Zombies.
Soon, Chu Donglin led a group of his subordinates into the alley where the Mutated Zombie was hiding. The narrow alley barely allowed two people to walk side by side.
After a moment of thought, Chu Donglin brought his group back out.
"You bastards, all of you stand right here."
He controlled the zombies to form a semi-circle, blocking off the corner, ensuring that once he lured out that First-Stage Zombie, every zombie's attack would strike simultaneously. Only then did Chu Donglin feel satisfied as he stepped into the alley.
Inside the narrow passage, it was eerily silent, with only some discarded trash scattered on the ground, making it look no different from an ordinary alley.
However, as he ventured deeper, the things on the ground became increasingly bizarre.
Chunks of flesh, remnants, and eerie white bones began to litter the filthy ground, creating a somewhat sinister atmosphere as if stepping into a den of cannibals—though in a sense, it truly was a den of cannibals.
Stepping over what felt like yet another chilling leg bone, Chu Donglin reached the end of the alley.
Before the apocalypse arrived, this place must have been a back alley of a bar.
At the end of the alley stood a side door, the back entrance of a bar, not particularly tall. The road ended abruptly at a two-meter-high concrete wall, turning this place into a dead end.
At first glance, the back alley of the bar was littered with shards of glass. There were many empty bottles scattered about, along with cigarette butts and used tissues.
A black trash can was stuffed to the brim, and in the corner, a few used condoms could be seen.
Before the apocalypse arrived, drunken patrons might have often urinated in this back area, leaving a lingering stench of urine in the alley.
And on this filthy ground lay a mutated First-Stage Zombie.
It was a middle-aged man with a massive beer belly. His already stout body seemed to have been enhanced after becoming a Zombie; he now stood over two meters tall, resembling a Meat Mountain.
The moment Chu Donglin spotted him, the Zombie sensed his presence as well. It suddenly opened its dark red eyes and, with surprising agility for its bulky frame, flipped over and stood up.
"Hiss... Grrr... Grrr..."
The blood-red eyes fixed intently on Chu Donglin. This mutated Zombie regarded him with some wariness as an unexpected visitor.
"Oh? You’re not charging at me right away?"
Chu Donglin was somewhat surprised; he hadn’t expected this Zombie to be so evolved, not lunging at him like ordinary Mutated Zombies did.
Standing at the corner and pondering for a moment, Chu Donglin picked up a bone and tossed it over.
Crack—
The Mutated Zombie let out a chilling roar, swatting away a human bone with a powerful swing, its fierce gaze fixed on Chu Donglin. Yet, it did not charge at him despite the provocation.
Its limited intelligence had already recognized that the Zombie before it was not an easy opponent. Thus, the Mutated Zombie merely glared coldly at Chu Donglin, attempting to intimidate him and avoid a reckless fight.
However, since Chu Donglin had come this far, there was no way he would leave so easily.
Moreover, the high level of evolution exhibited by this Mutated Zombie meant that if he could consume its Energy Crystal, his strength would at least double. It was likely that the second evolution was not far off.
Even for the Evolution Crystal nestled within its brain, Chu Donglin had no intention of retreating.
He observed the wary Mutated Zombie and broke into a radiant smile.
Raising his massive Hammer, Chu Donglin shouted and lunged forward. The twenty-pound iron hammer felt as light as a toy in his hands as he closed the ten-meter distance in the blink of an eye.
The Mutated Zombie roared in response, awkwardly dodging the hammer's strike and letting out an angry growl.
"Roar! Grrr!"
Ultimately, it lacked high intelligence; its earlier restraint had been driven by instinctive caution against danger rather than any strategic thought. Now, Chu Donglin's attack ignited the Zombie's fury. Its large mouth opened wide, revealing a long red object protruding from its gaping maw.
With a splatter—
Blood sprayed everywhere.
Chu Donglin clutched his pierced right shoulder, astonished as he staggered back several steps to evade the Mutated Zombie's assault.
Seeing the terrifying strength of this Mutated Zombie, Chu Donglin guessed that it must have awakened some powerful ability. However, he did not expect that this Meat Mountain-like Mutated Zombie would attack by spitting its tongue like a frog.
The speed of that tongue attack was truly horrifying. Even with Chu Donglin's current dynamic vision, he could only catch a blurry afterimage. If an ordinary person encountered this creature, they wouldn't even be able to see how it attacked.
Damn! He had thought that with such a massive size, this fellow would be a powerhouse type of Zombie.
As the creature raised its head and aimed its mouth at him again, Chu Donglin turned and ran without hesitation.
At the moment he lunged forward, a gust of wind brushed past his cheek. The tongue pierced through the wall beside him, leaving a large hole in the concrete.
Moreover, the wind generated by the attack actually grazed Chu Donglin's face, leaving a thin line of blood.
It should be noted that Chu Donglin's skin was incredibly tough now, with defensive capabilities comparable to some animals' scales. Yet even so, he was still injured, highlighting just how terrifying this Mutated Zombie's attack was.
Without hesitation, Chu Donglin discarded the twenty-pound iron hammer in his hand and continued to sprint toward the alleyway.
With the weight gone, his speed increased significantly as he surged forward like a whirlwind.
Chu Donglin's assessment of this Mutated Zombie was not wrong; although it possessed that incredibly frightening tongue attack, its body was indeed a powerhouse type of Zombie.
Thus, compared to Chu Donglin's speed, this Meat Mountain-like Zombie was much slower. It could only trail behind him, kicking up dust as it repeatedly spat its tongue attacks but failed to hit Chu Donglin.
Instead, the walls on either side of the alley were left with several large holes as debris flew everywhere.
"Roar!!!"
The Mutated Zombie, thoroughly enraged after failing to catch Chu Donglin, let out a terrifying roar and leaped heavily into the air, pouncing towards Chu Donglin like a predatory frog.
The sound of rushing wind came from behind. Chu Donglin stepped against the wall beside him and shouted loudly. Then, using the momentum of his high-speed run, he launched himself up the vertical wall.
Like Running up Walls, Chu Donglin evaded the Mutated Zombie's attack while ascending five or six meters. He then kicked off from a protruding beam, soaring over ten meters before lightly landing at the Corner.
There, a group of dazed Zombies stood scattered in a semicircle, raising their Steel Pipes high in the air.
Without hesitation, Chu Donglin charged forward, leaping three meters high and vaulting over the heads of the Zombies.
The Mutated Zombie missed its strike and fell further behind. Seeing that Chu Donglin was about to escape its attack range, this fellow became frantic with rage.
It roared angrily as it charged towards the alley entrance, its massive body barreling through like a Meat Mountain tank. At the same time, the mental intimidation of First-Stage Loss spread out, aiming to scare off the blocking Ordinary Zombies.
Its Blood-red Eyes were locked onto Chu Donglin's retreating figure, completely disregarding the foolish Ordinary Zombies in front of it.
As usual, it roared and charged towards the Corner. If these dazed Zombies did not move aside, they would be knocked away entirely. However, most of the time, these Zombies would be frightened into fleeing and would not dare to block its path.
This scenario had occurred several times during its chases with other First-Stage Zombies, so it paid no attention to the odd behavior of the group ahead.
However, as it charged forward like a roaring Meat Mountain tank, over twenty strong and towering Zombies simultaneously brought their Steel Pipes crashing down.
In an instant…
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Amidst the chaos, over twenty Zombies were thrown into disarray, with more than ten of them sent flying by the Mutated Zombie's tank-like charge, their limbs broken and shattered as they tumbled several meters away.
The remaining Zombies fared no better, facing the brute force of the Mutated Zombie head-on, while the other Ordinary Zombies sustained varying degrees of injury.
However, their desperate attacks were not in vain. The charge of this Meat Mountain-like Mutated Zombie was halted, and over twenty Steel Pipes came crashing down, striking it hard and leaving it bloodied and dazed on the ground.
This Meat Mountain Mutated Zombie was momentarily stunned; its feeble brain couldn't comprehend why this group of Low-Level Zombies dared to attack it.
Before it could rise from the ground, a fierce wind swept through. As the Mutated Zombie lifted its head, a massive Steel Pipe came crashing down onto its face.
"Roar!!!"
The Mutated Zombie let out a wretched howl as its head was smashed open, blood and brain matter splattering everywhere.
Unlike the attacks from these Low-Level Zombies, Chu Donglin's strength was far greater, and his blows carried a terrifying force. This tough-skinned First-Stage Zombie was struck so hard that its brain splattered.
Yet, this came at a cost. Looking at the Steel Pipe in his hand, now bent at an odd angle, and feeling the numbness in his hands from the impact, Chu Donglin took a deep breath and delivered two more strikes to the Mutated Zombie.
Only after thoroughly reducing its head to a puddle of mush did he ensure that even its formidable vitality could not save it. Finally, Chu Donglin tossed aside the Steel Pipe and searched through the mixture of red and white to retrieve the Mutated Zombie's Energy Crystal.
