When the door was knocked on, Ban Qingya was reading a book.
"Sister Qingya, are you asleep?"
Outside the door, Liu Xiner's voice came through.
Ban Qingya put down her book and stood up from the sofa. "Is there something you need?"
She walked to the door and opened it. "What brings you here so late? Has something happened?"
Then she saw Chu Donglin standing behind Liu Xiner, and she paused for a moment, realizing something.
"Are you Mr. Chu Donglin?"
Chu Donglin stared in astonishment at the beautiful woman who appeared to be around his age, his expression one of surprise.
"You are Ban Qingya? The leader of this camp?"
Ban Qingya frowned slightly, feeling displeased. "Mr. Chu, do you look down on girls?"
Clearly, Ban Qingya interpreted Chu Donglin's surprise as disdain for women, thinking it was unusual for such a large camp to be led by a girl.
This thought left her feeling somewhat disappointed.
From the information she had gathered from Liu Xiner, she had initially thought that Chu Donglin was an extraordinary person, but it turned out he was rather narrow-minded.
How could Chu Donglin not notice Ban Qingya's displeasure? He quickly shook his head in denial.
"I don't look down on girls; I'm just curious why Sister Qingya seems so young. As far as I know, you should be... cough cough... but why do you look like you're not even twenty? Sister Qingya truly has a youthful appearance."
Ban Qingya looked at Chu Donglin in confusion. "Who told you I'm old? I'm only twenty this year."
"…………"
Chu Donglin stared blankly at her. "Then why does Li Yi call you Big Sister? That guy is almost thirty, right..."
"Oh, is that what this is about?"
Ban Qingya suddenly understood. "That's just a common term of address. At first, it was just my juniors who occasionally called me that, and then somehow it spread around until everyone started using it."
She found it somewhat amusing. "Even some aunts and uncles in their forties and fifties call me that... Sometimes I think it's quite helpless."
With that, Ban Qingya stepped aside to let the two at the door enter.
"Come in and sit down; don't just stand at the door."
The room was a typical three-bedroom apartment, likely belonging to a family of three before the disaster struck.
However, after the apocalypse arrived, amidst the chaos, the original owners of the house had disappeared. When Ban Qingya and her group took over this area, it became her residence.
After all, there were so many empty rooms in the area that accommodating over two hundred Survivors was quite easy.
The three of them sat on the sofa while Ban Qingya went into the kitchen to busy herself for a while. She emerged carrying three cups of tea.
"The conditions are tough, and I don't have anything fancy to offer you, so please make do with this."
She smiled at Chu Donglin as she handed him a cup of tea.
The three of them sat down separately. After taking a gentle sip of tea, Ban Qingya smiled and glanced at Liu Xiner, asking, "Xing'er, you came to find me late at night. Is there something on your mind?"
After finishing her sentence, she turned to Chu Donglin beside her and smiled, saying, "If it's about accepting Mr. Chu Donglin, then I have no objections. After all, I have witnessed Mr. Chu's strength firsthand. If he can join us, it would certainly be a joyous occasion... He just needs to bear with it a little; once he joins the camp, he will have to follow the camp's rules like everyone else."
Liu Xiner and Chu Donglin exchanged glances, and when they looked back at Ban Qingya, there was a hint of apology in their eyes. "Sister Qingya, I... I came to say goodbye this time."
"Goodbye?"
Ban Qingya was taken aback, looking confused as she glanced at Chu Donglin and then back at Liu Xiner with a puzzled expression. "Are you planning to return to his camp with Mr. Chu Donglin? Why not stay here together?"
"It's not like that, Sister Qingya. I'm not going to my brother-in-law's camp... In fact, my brother-in-law has been on his own during this time and hasn't joined any camp."
Liu Xiner looked at Ban Qingya and said softly, "I want to go with my brother-in-law to the east bank of the Li River to search for my father. I haven't been able to contact him for so long, and I'm very worried about him..."
"Searching for your father? Are you joking?"
Ban Qingya furrowed her brows tightly and said, "There are zombies everywhere outside now. You and Mr. Chu Donglin want to cross half of Wocheng to find someone whose whereabouts are unknown? Xing'er, I remember you weren't this reckless."
"But it took so much effort for my brother-in-law to agree..."
After Ban Qingya rejected her proposal, the girl's mood sank a little. "As long as he doesn't encounter Second-Stage Zombies, he can ensure my safety. And even if we do run into Second-Stage Zombies, he can help me escape safely, so..."
Though the girl didn't finish her sentence, the three present understood what she meant.
Ban Qingya couldn't help but look at Chu Donglin with some displeasure. "Mr. Chu Donglin, Xing'er is still young and naive; how can you follow along with her foolishness? You know how dangerous it is outside!"
"It's not that dangerous," he replied calmly. "Although I'm not particularly strong, I am confident that I can safely take Xing'er to Jiangbei."
Chu Donglin smiled lightly, showing no signs of arrogance; his demeanor was more like a simple statement of fact.
"After all, I've been living among Zombies for so long, I have quite a bit of experience in avoiding them. Those Mutated Zombies may be formidable, but as long as I don't encounter them, how can they kill me from a distance?"
Ban Qingya looked helplessly at the two determined individuals and sighed.
"Alright, since you insist, I won't try to keep you. However, Mr. Chu Donglin, I hope you can prepare thoroughly and accurately assess your own abilities. Don't let a moment of bravado endanger yourself or others."
Chu Donglin nodded with a smile; Ban Qingya's distrust didn't anger him. "I understand that well. Thank you for your concern, Ban Jie."
"So when are you leaving?"
"Tomorrow morning."
"That soon?"
"The sooner we find it, the sooner Xing'er can feel at ease," Chu Donglin said with a mischievous grin. "After all, the longer we delay, the more suffering that old fellow Liushan Shu might endure. His suffering is one thing, but I don't want our dear Xing'er to worry as well."
Ban Qingya shook her head. "Your relationship with Mr. Liu really isn't very good."
"Do cats and mice need to have a good relationship?" Chu Donglin replied with an unusually intriguing smile.
