Chu Donglin turned around and looked at the girl, whose hesitant yet determined eyes made him chuckle.
"Are you worried about me?" he asked.
He took Liu Xiner's hand and gently patted it. "Don't worry, your brother-in-law isn't as weak as you think. Even without a motorcycle, facing a Second-Stage Zombie, those fellows won't be able to do anything to me."
He could easily tell what was on the mind of this innocent and kind-hearted girl.
Liu Xiner's concern didn't surprise Chu Donglin; it touched him and amused him at the same time.
"So let's continue our journey... Rest assured, I will definitely get you to your destination safely."
"But..."
"Being reckless has never been my style—you should know that, Xing'er."
Chu Donglin smiled and said, "I've never had the habit of showing off. I only do what I can do; I never push myself too hard—especially not in matters concerning our lives. If I wouldn't joke with my own life, why would I joke with yours? If I'm fine, then everything is fine."
"But brother-in-law, without the motorcycle, we..."
"Alright, let's not dwell on what-ifs. We don't have a motorcycle now, so we just need to find another one, right?"
Chu Donglin shook his head and firmly pulled the girl away from the broken street. "I don't remember teaching you to give up halfway."
In Wocheng, motorcycles were banned in the urban area; they were generally not allowed to enter.
The last time Chu Donglin found that idle motorcycle was partly due to his good luck, but the fact that he was in a semi-suburban area was also a significant reason.
However, now he and Liu Xiner found themselves in the densely populated city center, an area where traffic control was exceptionally strict before the disaster struck.
Finding a motorcycle here was akin to chasing a dream.
What was even more terrifying was the density of Zombies nearby, which was truly beyond imagination.
The outbreak occurred on a weekend, and the streets around Wocheng's city center were filled with pedestrians, bustling with countless people.
Without exposing his identity as a Zombie, Chu Donglin could not recklessly use his intimidation ability against Low-Level Zombies. Thus, the pace at which he and Liu Xiner moved became unusually slow.
They had to carefully navigate through the ocean of Zombies, seeking the safest path with the fewest Zombies along the way.
This skill was originally exclusive to Survivors in the apocalypse, but even the most seasoned Survivor could not compare to Chu Donglin in this regard.
Ordinary Survivors could only rely on experience and wisdom to deduce which routes had fewer Zombies and which buildings harbored terrifying Mutated Zombies that needed to be avoided.
However, as a powerful Second-Stage Zombie, Chu Donglin could directly command Low-Level Zombies hundreds of meters away to clear the path for him, opening up the alley.
As they proceeded, Liu Xiner was astonished to discover that all her survival skills she had learned during this time were completely ineffective.
Many alleys she believed would be teeming with Zombies turned out to be empty when Chu Donglin led her through them, revealing no sight of a single Zombie.
Several buildings that clearly seemed to harbor Mutated Zombies did not have any rushing out when Chu Donglin guided her past them.
Moreover, Chu Donglin's understanding of Second-Stage Mutated Zombies far surpassed hers.
Basically, within the buildings that Chu Donglin needed to avoid, there was definitely a Second-Stage Zombie lurking inside.
In fact, there were several Second-Stage Zombies hidden so deeply within some buildings that even Liu Xiner couldn't detect them. However, with just a glance from a distance, Chu Donglin could infer that there were Second-Stage Zombies inside.
Unaware of Chu Donglin's identity or the fact that Zombies could sense each other, she followed him throughout the afternoon without encountering a single Mutated Zombie.
The occasional Zombie they came across were merely scattered Ordinary Zombies, posing no threat at all.
This situation left Liu Xiner in awe, further increasing her admiration for Chu Donglin.
No wonder her brother-in-law could survive alone in this apocalypse and become so powerful; his understanding of Zombies must have surpassed everyone else's…
Feeling a bit uneasy under Liu Xiner's admiring gaze, Chu Donglin realized he might have gone a bit overboard.
Clearly, this was the most densely populated area of Zombies, the City Center District, where normally people would be packed tightly on the streets. How could they possibly walk through without encountering several Zombies?
To prevent raising any suspicions in Liu Xiner, Chu Donglin had to deliberately “make mistakes” a few times, leading her into the encirclement of Zombies, and then struggling to escape.
Even so, Liu Xiner remained full of admiration for him, insisting on learning how to identify the habits of Zombies along the way.
However, these were things that only human Survivors needed to learn and explore; Chu Donglin had no clue about them.
To avoid exposing himself, he had to come up with various excuses to brush her off, saying things like, “It’s still dangerous now; let’s wait until we’re safe.”
As they navigated through streets and alleys while dealing with the girl’s questions, Chu Donglin intentionally slowed his pace to keep his abilities from seeming too exaggerated. It was only when darkness fell that they finally reached the edge of the Li River.
The urban area of Wocheng is vast, formed by the merger of three counties and five districts into a large city. A wide Li River runs through the city center, dividing it into two halves.
Wocheng has built three major bridges over the Li River, but the most famous and heavily trafficked by pedestrians is the Li River Bridge, as it connects the city centers on both sides. The other two bridges primarily connect suburban or semi-suburban areas.
The Li River Bridge stretches for five kilometers, taking over ten minutes to cross even by bicycle, let alone on foot.
As darkness fell, for safety reasons, Chu Donglin and his companion temporarily sought refuge in a residential building near the Li River Bridge, planning to wait until dawn before setting out again.
At night, the city becomes a domain of Second-Stage Zombies.
When the sun's light fades away and darkness envelops the land, what was once a human city turns into a terrifying place filled with chaos.
Those Second-Stage Zombies that had been sleeping in their nests to avoid sunlight emerge from their hiding places to scour the city for prey, engaging in brutal fights among themselves.
For humanity, this is the darkest hour.
Humans, lacking sufficient weapons, find themselves utterly powerless against the overwhelming majority of Second-Stage Zombies.
If a human Survivor camp is discovered by Second-Stage Zombies, it would undoubtedly lead to a horrific disaster.
To wander outside during the night would be tantamount to seeking death.
