"What if Dad turns into a Zombie like Uncle? What should we do?"
The girl's voice was filled with worry and sadness. Chu Donglin paused for a moment before suddenly bursting into laughter.
"Well, if he really does pass away, what can you do? You don't have the ability to bring the dead back to life, do you?"
As he spoke, he ruffled the girl's hair gently and continued, "Why worry so much? We should be able to see him tomorrow afternoon. Then we'll know whether he's alive or dead. Worrying here is just a waste of time, isn't it?"
The girl stared blankly at Chu Donglin and managed a complex smile.
"Brother-in-law..."
"Yes?"
"Sometimes, I really wonder if you're made of iron or stone. Why have I never seen you scared or worried?"
"Worry and fear are emotions that naturally exist; I just don't express them."
Chu Donglin patted the girl's shoulder and said, "If something happens, no amount of distress or worry will change it. Instead of complaining and worrying, it's better to spend that time thinking about how to get through the tough times."
"So you always prefer to silently bear all the difficulties without telling anyone?"
"Pretty much."
"Is that a form of male chauvinism?"
"It's just a personal habit, not male chauvinism."
"But brother-in-law..."
"Hmm?"
"If... if..."
The girl raised her head, her fists clenched in worry and timidity. In the end, she decided to speak up, "If you could change this habit of yours, when you told everything to my sister back then, she definitely wouldn't have left you... Your father did so many terrible things to you, and she was completely unaware."
Chu Donglin's footsteps came to a halt.
He instinctively glanced toward the southeast, then lowered his head, remaining silent for a long time.
A cool breeze swept by, causing his dry hair and the ends of his scarf to flutter gently, obscuring his expression.
At that moment, the man standing by the river seemed almost like a statue.
Then he spoke.
"I have never blamed her for that incident."
He lifted his head and looked northeast, where the city of Jiang Hai was located, and where the girl named Liu Mengying was now.
"There is ultimately a connection between us but no fate. Even if I were to come out, what would it matter? She has made up her mind to leave; coming out would only add to her troubles. If this causes her to completely fall out with your father, and they can no longer get along happily as father and daughter, that is not what I desire."
"Do you hate my father?"
As she asked this question, the girl tightly grasped Chu Donglin's hand, filled with anxiety.
"Hate? I wouldn't say hate. From his perspective, what he did wasn't entirely wrong; it's just a pity that his methods were too crude."
Chu Donglin replied quietly, "Everyone must take responsibility for their mistakes. Since he made a mistake, he must face the consequences... After all, you know how excessive his actions towards my family were, Xing'er."
Seeing the girl's conflicted and pained expression, which seemed on the verge of tears, Chu Donglin couldn't help but chuckle as he ruffled her hair.
"Alright, stop looking at me like that. I only intend to punish him; I'm not going to kill him. After all, his two daughters have been quite beneficial to me, so I should at least do him a favor, right?"
Liu Xiner's face suddenly flushed red as she swatted away Chu Donglin's hand and huffed, "Brother-in-law!"
"Here I am! What can I do for you, my beautiful Sister Xin'er?"
"You are so annoying! I'm trying to have a serious conversation with you!"
"Aren't I being serious too?"
Chu Donglin raised an eyebrow. "Are you going to sleep with me tonight?"
"Ahhhhh! Brother-in-law, you're the worst!"
The girl covered her face and ran away.
Watching the girl with the backpack run ahead, Chu Donglin shrugged and leisurely followed her.
"Idiot Xing'er, do you really need to ask such a question? Even if it's just for you, I could never bring myself to kill your father."
Shaking his head with a sigh, Chu Donglin muttered, "Besides, if he knew that he finally managed to drive me away from his eldest daughter, only to turn around and find that I had captured her again, wouldn't he be furious? The biggest blow to him would actually be you. I don't have to do anything; just by parading you in front of him, I could probably give him a heart attack."
The journey along the river could be incredibly safe, as there were almost no Zombies along the banks.
However, if they were to walk purely on foot, their pace remained exceedingly slow.
Around five-thirty in the afternoon, Chu Donglin and Liu Xiner arrived at the North District.
They planned to rest here for the night before heading to Liu Family Villa via the North Ring Road the next day.
As expected, there weren't many Zombies in the North District.
Naturally, there were also relatively fewer Mutated Zombies in this area.
After leaving the riverside and entering the sparsely populated North District, it took them more than ten minutes of walking before Chu Donglin sensed the presence of fewer than three Second-Stage Zombies.
Moreover, due to the low density of Zombies here, their evolutionary levels were significantly lower compared to those in the City Center District.
However, for safety's sake, Chu Donglin still took Liu Xiner to find an abandoned room to stay in.
Now that the city was sparsely populated and had turned into a world of Zombies, these houses had long been abandoned for who knows how long, with dust accumulating thickly inside.
The reason for stopping early to prepare for rest was to clean up the hygiene of the room they were staying in.
Although it wasn't necessary to make this room, which would only be occupied for one night, perfectly clean and tidy, a basic level of cleanliness was still required; it was impossible to sleep in a pile of dust.
However, after finishing the cleaning, when Chu Donglin was preparing dinner for Liu Xiner, they both noticed something strange—the store downstairs had been completely emptied.
There were clearly no signs of Survivors living nearby, yet the entire store had been cleared out. It didn't seem like something a passing Survivor would do; it felt more like an organized group of Survivors collecting food.
Fortunately, both of them had prepared some food in their backpacks before setting out, anticipating situations where food might be scarce, so they weren't too distressed.
However, Chu Donglin quietly kept this matter in mind, remaining vigilant.
Unlike Zombies, if there really were human Survivor forces in the area, their living conditions would undoubtedly be much better than those of Ban Qingya and her group.
After all, there were few Zombies here, which meant more space for humans to live, and that implied greater strength—naturally, the potential danger could also be higher, which warranted caution.
