Amidst the focused gazes of the crowd, Wu was momentarily stunned, instinctively touching his own face, and then he froze.
Blood.
Thick, sticky blood appeared on his face.
This mysterious blood seemed freshly splattered, not yet dried.
He thought of something and suddenly turned to look behind him.
What he saw was a bizarre scene.
The fountain that had been spraying clear water just moments ago was still gushing liquid, but now that dark red liquid was undeniably filled with a nauseating, sticky sense of bloodiness.
Some of the blood, as it surged out, was blown by the biting cold wind to the edges, and the drop on Wu's face likely came from there.
Looking at this fountain that had suddenly transformed into a Blood Pool, Wu hesitated for a moment but ultimately raised his Light Machine Gun and stepped toward the now dark red Fountain.
The dark barrel of the gun was slightly elevated, silently aimed at the Blood Pool ahead, and his finger was already on the trigger; with even the slightest movement, a terrifying hail of bullets would shred any enemies in front of him.
However, when Wu reached the front of the Fountain, no monsters leaped out from the now dark red Blood Pool.
Naturally, he did not pull the trigger.
Yet Wu did not relax; his finger remained on the trigger as he leaned in slightly toward the Blood Pool.
Nothing was there.
In the Blood Pool, there was nothing.
The clean Pool Water was so clear that not even a single floating leaf could be seen, nor was there any excess debris.
If it weren't for the thick, dark red hue that filled the air with an eerie presence, this could almost be considered a very clean Fountain.
After staring at the water for a long time, Wu still found nothing. He slowly let out a sigh of relief and took two steps back.
"You all go check where this pool leads to. Why has the color of the water changed?"
He turned to the few Survivors behind him and issued the command. However, as he turned around, he saw the horror and fear etched on everyone's faces, causing him to pause in confusion.
"What’s wrong? Why are you looking at me like that? Is there something on my face?"
One Survivor swallowed hard and pointed a trembling finger at Wu's back.
"Captain, you... there's something on your back..."
In an instant, Wu's body froze in place.
He gripped his gun tightly, his entire body stiffening. A deep chill began to rise from within his bones as he felt the terrified gazes of his companions upon him.
"Hehehe..."
An eerie female laughter suddenly echoed in his ear, gradually fading into the distance until it vanished completely.
Wu lunged forward abruptly, his right hand gripping a dagger as he aimed it at his back.
Nothing but empty air.
As his right hand reached behind him, he encountered only the void; there was nothing at all on his back.
Wu was taken aback, still unable to process what was happening when the Survivor in front of him hurriedly stopped his movements.
"It’s gone! Captain. It’s already gone!"
At that moment, another Survivor rushed over holding a mirror and handed it to Wu.
Wu carefully examined his back from various angles using the mirror, and indeed, it was completely empty; there was nothing at all.
Furrowing his brows, he looked at the crowd.
"What did you see earlier? Was there something on my back? What was it?"
A chorus of voices erupted.
"A big Toad, covered in pus, with black skin. It was disgusting."
"No, it was definitely an Octopus! But that Octopus had three bulging eyes on its head, and its suckers were pitch black."
"Uh... what I saw looked like a big cloud of mist. It was hazy, as if there was nothing inside..."
The responses varied wildly, with no two accounts matching.
Wu's frown deepened.
"Are you sure you didn’t see wrong? Was there really something on my back?"
The group nodded vigorously.
"Then why are your descriptions all different? Are you trying to make a fool of me? Or have you all gone cross-eyed?"
A group of people stood in stunned silence, but eventually, they all insisted that they had not seen wrong.
"How could such a large Toad be mistaken? I thought I was seeing things, so I looked several times, and it really is a Toad... and it even stuck out its tongue as if it wanted to lick the captain's face. How disgusting! Its tongue is black."
"No way, it's clearly an Octopus! How could it be a Toad? I absolutely won't be mistaken; my family has been running an Aquarium for years, and I know these aquatic creatures better than anyone. Although that Octopus looks a bit strange, it's definitely an Octopus and nothing else."
The group argued back and forth, each holding their ground, while Wu's brow furrowed deeper in confusion.
The insistence in their voices didn’t seem fabricated; it was clear that each person firmly believed what they had seen was the truth. But what could possibly cause over thirty people to have such differing opinions?
Wu recalled the eerie laughter of the woman he had heard earlier...
"Did anyone hear a woman's voice before? The kind that laughs in a very strange and glamorous way?"
As Wu asked, the Survivors shook their heads one by one, indicating they hadn’t heard anything.
However, just as Wu and the others were pondering this bizarre phenomenon...
Gurgle—gurgle—
A strange sound emerged, as if something in the pool behind them was about to surface.
When the group turned to look at the pool, they saw the dark red water bubbling up with odd bubbles. Even the fountain that had been continuously spraying blood had stopped.
The group was taken aback, feeling confused by this strange occurrence.
They stood frozen in place, staring at the bubbling Blood Pool, an inexplicable fear creeping into their hearts as if something terrifying was about to emerge from within.
Gurgle—gurgle—
A massive bubble rose and then burst with a soft pop.
Then, the once calm waters of the Blood Pool suddenly rippled, and something began to surface.
It was dark and elongated...
"That's a body! It's a body!"
A group of people screamed in terror, pointing at the corpse that floated up from the Blood Pool. The lifeless figure was clad in familiar clothing they recognized all too well.
The face, whitened by the water, had its eyes gently closed, as if merely asleep, ready to open at any moment.
Yet that face was one that everyone present knew all too well.
It was the corpse of someone they were intimately familiar with...
It was... Wu's body. (To be continued...)
