“Fallen Body?”
Chu Donglin narrowed his eyes, noticing this unfamiliar term.
He keenly sensed the special meaning behind the word and couldn't help but ask, “What is Fallen Body?”
Ban Guozhi took a deep breath, snapping back to reality from the shock of realizing that Chu Donglin was a high-level Ordinary Zombie. He glanced at Chu Donglin several times before suddenly asking an unrelated question.
“Son, do you know why we understand Zombies so well? It’s only been half a year since the apocalypse began, yet we already know so much?”
Chu Donglin chuckled and shrugged, “How would I know? You can’t possibly tell me that the Zombie Virus was actually created by you guys, and then there was a lab leak that led to this disaster, right?”
Ban Guozhi snorted coldly, looking down on Chu Donglin's suggestion.
“If our technology were advanced enough to develop such a virus, we would have already taken over the world and built spaceships to conquer the stars.”
“Well, I don’t know what’s going on then,” Chu Donglin said with another shrug and a smile. “Why don’t you explain it to me, esteemed father-in-law?”
“Pah! Who’s your esteemed father-in-law? I haven’t even acknowledged your relationship with Ya yet; don’t push your luck.”
Despite his words, Ban Guozhi's attitude was clearly much softer than it had been at first.
It was evident that life sometimes felt like a strong current; when one couldn’t resist, they could only endure silently. This man, who had lived for over fifty years, understood this better than anyone.
In his view, Chu Donglin and Ban Qingya had already made a lifelong commitment to each other and even had children. There was no way to separate them now. He could only tacitly accept the situation—thinking this way made Ban Guozhi realize that the guy opposite him wasn’t too bad-looking after all?
Ugh! This scoundrel should be chopped up and fed to the fish! Good-looking my foot!
Ban Guozhi inexplicably felt a surge of frustration and turned away. “I’m done thinking about it! You can go check out Jiang Hai yourself later.”
With that, Ban Guozhi didn’t spare another glance at Chu Donglin as he walked toward the command vehicle with Shu Yuyao supporting Ban Qingya.
“Pack up; we’re heading to Ark Base.”
As he stepped onto the command vehicle's door, Ban Guozhi finally turned back to glare at Chu Donglin and shouted irritably.
"What are you standing there for? Come over here! Do I need to personally invite you, old man?"
Chu Donglin looked at the soldiers who had already put away their weapons. He glanced at the sulking Ban Guozhi and chuckled.
"Alright, since you refuse to tell me, I'll just have to investigate on my own later... Well, I've gathered enough information for now. Let's part ways here, and perhaps we'll meet again another time."
With that, he turned to leave, showing no signs of reluctance.
Watching Chu Donglin's retreating figure, Ban Guozhi nearly exploded with anger. His face was flushed, and his nostrils flared.
"Damn it! Where do you think you're going, Chu? Are you just going to abandon Ya? Do you want to die?"
He drew his sidearm, glaring at Chu Donglin's back in a mix of fury and disbelief. "Get back here! Or I swear I'll shoot you!"
Chu Donglin paused, turning around helplessly with his hands raised in a gesture of surrender.
"I'm just responding to your call to leave quickly, aren't I? Since you dislike me so much, I figured it would be best not to stick around and irritate you further. I wouldn't want you to shoot me out of anger."
"You..."
Ban Guozhi was momentarily speechless, his face turning pale with frustration as he struggled to find words. After all, he had been the one shouting threats at Chu Donglin earlier and had told him to get lost.
But how could he possibly ask Chu Donglin to stay now?
He glanced around and saw that his soldiers were all trying hard not to laugh. When they caught his furious gaze, they quickly straightened their faces and turned away... only to continue stifling their laughter.
Even Shu Yuyao nearby was covering her mouth, chuckling at his predicament.
Ban Guozhi's forehead twitched with anger as he waved his gun at Chu Donglin, roaring, "I didn't mean for you to come over! I’d rather shoot you than have you here! But... for Ya and my grandson's sake, I can't let you go! Get over here! Or I really will pull the trigger."
Chu Donglin shrugged with a smile and shook his head.
"Alright then, Old Man Ban. Since I've learned everything I wanted to know, I won't keep anything from you. Honestly, there's nothing between me and Sister Qingya. We can only be considered ordinary friends; we are neither lovers nor married. The whole idea of her being pregnant with my child was just a joke—don't take it seriously."
As Chu Donglin spoke the truth, Ban Guozhi became even more enraged, stomping his feet in frustration.
"You... You... You're a grown man! How can you lack this much responsibility? Just because my attitude was a bit harsh, you're scared off and don't dare pursue Ya anymore? Damn it! Are you even a man? Don't forget she’s carrying your child!"
Chu Donglin sighed helplessly and said, "Isn't it? What child is just a joke? I just wanted to get some words out of you. Ya... ugh! Sister Qingya has nothing to do with me."
"Relationship my ass! You, with the surname Chu, I warn you, if you try to shirk responsibility and run away again, I'll skin you alive!"
Ban Guozhi was so furious that he cursed, his face turning red.
"Try taking another step! As a man, if you can't even handle this little pressure, how can you call yourself a man? I've only been a bit harsh on you on the surface, but you've already gotten this far with Ya, and now there's a child involved. Even if I'm really unhappy about it, I could only curse a few times. Do you think I can actually drive you away and leave Ya and the child to fend for themselves? Can't you handle this little pressure?"
Watching Chu Donglin's back as he walked away without looking back, even picking up speed, Ban Guozhi was nearly driven to the brink of madness, jumping up and down in place.
"Ahhhhh!!! You, with the surname Chu! Get your ass back here! Otherwise, I'll shoot you!"
Chu Donglin stopped in his tracks again. He turned around helplessly and looked at Ban Guozhi with sincerity. "Old Man Ban, I really..."
Bang—
A gunshot rang out, and pieces of the cement ground flew up near Chu Donglin's feet.
Ban Guozhi aimed the gun at Chu Donglin and coldly said, "You have three seconds to come over here obediently... You should trust my marksmanship; I won't hit your nose when aiming for your eyes!" (To be continued...)
