For college students, Christmas is a particularly festive time of the year.
Of course, for students who have an abundance of free time, all they really need is an excuse to celebrate and revel. Whether that excuse is Christmas or New Year's Day doesn’t really matter.
The holiday spirit had already begun to take shape a few days prior when the various shops on campus started putting up decorations featuring Santa Claus.
As one of the leaders of the student council, Chu Donglin was informed that if he had some free time, he would be responsible for organizing the school's Christmas party—though as the President of the student council, he could easily delegate the task to the Vice President.
Unfortunately, the Vice President was someone he was quite close to… in fact, she was his girlfriend. Thus, the responsibility for planning Christmas fell on both of their shoulders.
Despite being someone who had already begun to carve out his own entrepreneurial path and seen broader horizons beyond school, the idea of a couple's Christmas celebration wasn’t particularly appealing to him.
However, some things were quietly changing, subtly yet profoundly.
Chu Donglin was no longer just Liu Mengying’s boyfriend; their relationship was gradually becoming more intimate.
He thought that perhaps it was time to take their relationship to the next level.
He had made a connection with a well-placed friend who was eager to collaborate with him… or at least offer him some assistance.
Exceptional people tend to attract one another.
Having gained that friend's recognition, Chu Donglin was determined to produce results that would impress him.
He had that conviction.
His plans were already in motion. In just six months to a year, the people of Wocheng would witness a miracle unfold before their eyes.
By that time, he would have enough confidence and assurance to stand before Liu Mengying’s father—the formidable Richest Man in Wocheng—and tell him that he intended to take his daughter away.
There was no reason for Bai Chu and Dongling to refuse Liushan Shu's ability.
In the end, Chu Donglin would walk into the hall of marriage with the girl he loved, starting a family and enjoying a blissful life that others would envy.
Indeed, Chu Donglin thought. He believed this was a logical conclusion. Wasn't it?
He recalled his father's words from many years ago: "We will all meet those we need, and we will also encounter those who need us. A person's life is a journey of constantly seeking and exploring another person who needs them. I have found the person I need—your mother—and I believe you will eventually find someone who needs you too."
He would be the one Liu Mengying needed. He thought that Liu Mengying was also the one he needed.
But why did he feel so uneasy?
On the night before Christmas, it snowed. Chu Donglin stood at the school gate, gazing at the frozen lake in the distance.
The snow began to fall at dawn and only stopped an hour ago. The sky was like black velvet, dotted with tiny ice-like stars. Under the moonlight, everything was enchanting, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere.
A soft hand rested in his.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" the girl said softly. Chu Donglin nodded but did not look at her.
"And there are plenty of snowballs."
"What?"
"Snowballs," she said, affectionately nuzzling his cheek and repeating herself. "These snowflakes are just ammunition for a snowball fight, right?"
He finally turned around and gasped in surprise.
Although he was already familiar with everything about the girl's body, he was still taken aback by her beauty at that moment. Perhaps it was because she was dressed for the evening event; the girl wore a gown reminiscent of Snow White, with a delicate touch of Snow White at her chest that was intoxicatingly tender.
Her shoes appeared as if sculpted from ice, the long white heels adorned with a subtle sheen of White Light. The warm glow of the streetlights reflected off her snow-white, soft skin, making her look like a fairy that had stepped out of a storybook—dreamy and beautiful.
But she was not a frost queen, cold and statuesque; she was warm and vibrant. Her Silver Long Hair cascaded down to her waist, and her cheeks flushed pink under his gaze, her beautiful eyes sparkling with joy.
"You look like... like the snow falling from the sky," he said, "all in white."
He reached out and took a strand of her hair, wrapping it around his finger.
She playfully stuck out her tongue and licked Chu Donglin's face, smiling proudly, satisfied by her lover's praise. "Yes."
With a smile, she reached out to touch his hair, clumsily mimicking his actions to embrace his head. "Our children will definitely be adorable... Of course, they will be cute since their parents are so beautiful and handsome; they will naturally be lovely."
He froze.
"Meng Ying, you..."
She chuckled softly. "No, not yet. But we can't possibly not have children, can we?"
Gently stroking her belly with a sweet smile, the girl said, "Chu Donglin, if the time comes in the future, you would let me have a child for you, right? But I've thought about it for a long time and now I regret it."
Like a cute dog longing for home, she buried her head in Chu Donglin's embrace, affectionately rubbing her face against his. "I think one might not be enough... I want two, three, four, five... or even many more. Imagine having a bunch of adorable kids running behind us; we could even form a basketball team to compete against each other!"
Children.
The word pierced him like a knife.
She envisioned their future children. Yet his thoughts had already flown ahead, imagining Liu Mengying as his wife, their children living by his side.
He would establish his own foundation, showcasing his miracle to everyone in Wocheng, rising from almost nothing. As he and the girl gradually grew older, those children would grow up, becoming adults who would take over the family business under his guidance, turning it into something even greater.
He would become a father, a father to one or several children. There would be one or more kids joyfully running around him, laughing.
The responsibilities and burdens of home would weigh heavily on him.
On one hand, he longed for this; he enjoyed having the girl by his side, loved holding her in his arms at night, relished her scent and breath, cherished her laughter—clear as a bell, infused with the sweet fragrance of roses.
Yet he also wondered… why did his heart feel so unsettled?
Gently wrapping his arms around the girl’s waist, he silently gazed through the swirling snowstorm at a certain place in the city.
That direction pointed towards the villa where a man named Liushan Shu lived.
He was Liu Mengying's father.
Perhaps it was time to pay a visit; after all, it was necessary to confront the situation.
Softly embracing his wife, Chu Donglin thought to himself.
…………
………………
Cold snowflakes gently fell from the pitch-black night sky, landing on the face of the indifferent man.
In the dim light, strands of gray and white hair gently swayed in the cold night breeze.
Behind him was the dazzling Human Base, where the joyful laughter of children and the cheerful chatter of people drifted through the windows. Yet here, it felt as distant as if he were in another world.
In the quiet courtyard, a man who had almost merged with the night slowly extended his right hand. Under the warm yellow light, he quietly watched as a white snowflake landed on his palm.
It did not melt.
His hand was already cold, no longer possessing the warmth of the past.
The snow here was frigid.
The man raised his head indifferently, silently gazing at the pitch-black night sky above. Deep within his crimson eyes, a beautiful figure resembling a dreamlike fairy reflected back at him.
“Daddy, what are you thinking about? You look so lost,” a curious voice from behind him broke the silence.
Chu Donglin turned around to see the girl Shishi standing at the entrance with snow, both looking at him with wide-eyed curiosity.
He took a deep breath, pulling himself from his reverie, and smiled to mask his emotions. “It’s nothing, just remembering a bit of the past. It’s fine.”
With that, he stood up and looked at the two girls who had just returned. “Did you have fun? The human festival must be lively, right?”
After arriving at this Survivor Base, they had coincidentally caught the Carnival festivities.
Driven by curiosity, the girl insisted on going to see it. Due to certain reasons, Chu Donglin couldn’t leave, so he let snow take her instead.
After all, with their abilities, no one in this Human Base could harm them.
The Third-Stage Zombie was already a terrifying creature.
When it was only at the First or even Second Stage, conventional human weapons still posed a significant threat.
However, once the Zombie evolved to the Third Stage, its rapidly increasing strength and abilities transformed it into a horrifying humanoid weapon, making it nearly impossible for most people to inflict damage on them with regular weapons.
Forget ordinary firearms; even powerful sniper rifles struggled to have any effect against a Third-Stage Zombie.
Unless one had an army like Ban Guozhi's, relying on a well-organized legion to shoot and continuously attack from all angles to cover up the inadequacies of their firepower, it would be nearly impossible to harm a Third-Stage Zombie.
Only three Zombies had entered this base: Chu Donglin and his two companions. The rest of the Zombie Legion had been left by Chu Donglin in the mountains outside the base.
After all, that group of fellows was bizarre; the vast majority had been grotesquely altered by the virus, making their abnormalities apparent from a distance.
The only exception was probably the cat perched on Shishi's shoulder.
Chu Donglin wasn't particularly fond of Dodo, the female cat that lacked any combat prowess.
Dodo seemed to sense Chu Donglin's attitude, so she clung tightly to Shishi, relying on her protector and refusing to let go, worried that Chu Donglin might find an excuse to abandon her. (To be continued...)
