The night wind blew from all directions, causing the garments and hair of the two figures atop the tall tower to dance chaotically.
Neither of them showed any surprise at the sudden attack from the assassin. They did not express any thoughts about the interruption, as if the intruder did not exist at all.
In the cold breeze, Chu Donglin stood high on the tower, quietly gazing at the girl before him, slowly exhaling a breath of mist.
"Can you tell me what exactly happened?"
Chu Donglin silently watched the girl, a hint of melancholy in his eyes.
"Perhaps I can help you..."
The girl smiled gratefully, then shook her head.
"No need, Donglin Brother. There's nothing more to be done. I'm already very happy that you’ve spent so much time with me in this whimsical way... The curse of the Evil God has been irreversible from the very beginning. Ever since my father sacrificed me to that Evil God, I knew I could never return."
She gazed dreamily at Chu Donglin, her smile sweet.
"Actually, thinking about it carefully, it's not so bad to leave like this... At least I haven't completely turned into a monster yet, and I haven't had the chance to harm anyone else."
"To meet you, Donglin Brother, just as I'm about to become a monster and hurt others—Sasha is truly fortunate."
The pair of wings behind her had completely disintegrated, leaving no trace of their existence.
Glamorous blood oozed from within her body, pooling on the floor of the tower in a steady drip.
"In that case, when I meet my friends down below in the future, Sasha can proudly say that she has never done anything wrong."
"Thinking about it carefully, this is quite something to be proud of."
She gazed dreamily at Chu Donglin, slowly leaning back.
"So... goodbye then, Donglin Brother."
"I will miss you."
The girl's body, frail and broken, fell like a candle flickering in the wind, tumbling over the railing.
Seeing this scene, Chu Donglin instinctively reached out to catch her, pulling the bloodied girl into his embrace.
Her body was on the brink of collapse, falling apart in many places.
Her skin was torn, flesh peeling away. She had almost become a horrifying figure drenched in blood, countless droplets dripping from her body and staining Chu Donglin.
Yet, he seemed oblivious to it all.
He gently crouched down, cradling the girl's shattered form.
At that moment, the woman with long hair cascading over half her face managed to move. Feeling the man's embrace, she struggled to open her hollow eyes and forced a smile at the corner of her lips.
As Chu Donglin reached to brush her hair aside, she used her only intact right hand to grasp him tightly.
"Tell me... am I still beautiful?"
Even if just for a brief moment, pulling aside those strands of hair was enough for Chu Donglin to see clearly.
Under the curse of the Evil God, the girl's body had completely fallen apart. Aside from her legs and left hand being eroded away, even half of her cheek had been ravaged into a ghastly sight.
But looking at that blood-soaked face, Chu Donglin smiled. His smile was warm and tender, devoid of any impurities; it was a praise that came from deep within his soul.
"You are the most beautiful..."
"That's... great..."
The voice was weak, almost inaudible, but the smile and joy on the girl's face were clear for anyone to see. With the heartfelt praise from her beloved, she finally closed her eyes in Chu Donglin's embrace.
As the wind blew, dust rose from the man's body.
He knelt there, holding the girl named Yumo Sha, feeling the life within her fade away, remaining silent.
The dust first fell from her fingertips, then from her shoulders, hair, and forehead, as if she were a statue that had endured countless years in an instant. Finally, the figure that leaned against him gradually peeled away and dissipated, carried off by the restless wind to her longed-for hometown...
Wangcheng.
"Brother Donglin, how do I solve this problem?"
"Brother Donglin, do you like Sasha?"
"Hey... Brother Donglin, when I grow up, can I marry you?"
"Brother Donglin, I'm going to Sun City; I probably won't be back for a long time... Will you miss me?"
"Woo woo woo... Brother Donglin, goodbye... goodbye... I will miss you! Woo woo woo woo... You mustn't forget me! You mustn't forget Sasha!"
"Brother Donglin, I like you the most..."
In his ears, familiar voices echoed.
Before his eyes, a scene that seemed familiar yet strange began to unfold.
There were two figures that felt both known and unknown.
Then he suddenly realized what it was.
It was two children, hand in hand under the glow of the sunset, walking along the railway while humming a lullaby.
"Brother Donglin, you're singing off-key."
"Really?"
"Of course, you're not supposed to sing it like that."
"Who cares about that? As long as we're happy, that's all that matters."
The boy laughed playfully, and in the sunlight, his smile looked very charming, making the girl's face suddenly turn red.
"Dong... Brother Donglin..."
"Hmm?"
"Sasha wants to marry you when she grows up, okay?"
"No way."
"Why not? Is Sasha not good enough?"
"You're very good, but you cry too much. I don't want to bring home a girl who always has a runny nose."
The girl scrunched her nose, looking a bit unhappy.
"Then... then I won't cry anymore, okay?"
"Look, look, you're about to cry again... Last time you cried, my dad scolded me for it. I ended up bullying you again. But was that my fault? You fell down all by yourself; I'm the one who's wronged here."
The girl lowered her head, feeling a bit embarrassed.
"But it really hurts... Look, Sasha's knee is still swollen."
With that, she released the boy's hand and pulled up her pant leg.
"Look, Brother Donglin. It's really swollen and hasn't gone down at all."
However, when she lifted her head, the boy had already walked far down the railway.
His not-so-tall figure was walking along the tracks, perfectly illuminated by the sunset, casting a light golden glow around him.
The girl immediately furrowed her brows and hurriedly dropped her pant leg to chase after him.
"Brother Donglin! Why did you run off without waiting for me? I haven't even shown you my knee yet."
She caught up to him and walked alongside him on the other side of the railway tracks, reaching out to grab his hand. "That's so rude."
The boy took her hand and shrugged.
"It's just a little injury. Last time I dislocated my shoulder; did you see me crying? Come on, maybe you're just too sensitive. You're not strong at all."
The girl frowned, feeling upset.
"But... it really hurts."
Then the boy turned to look at her and shook his head.
"You’re not thinking about crying again, are you?"
"I... hmph! Of course not! Sasha is the bravest!"
"Then show me a smile, and remember to make it a happy one."
The girl huffed and turned her head away.
"I'm not smiling."
"Why not?"
"Because Brother Donglin, you're so annoying. You don't care about Sasha at all. Sasha doesn't want to smile for you."
The boy was at a loss for words.
"You little girl."
Though he was only three years older than her, when he said this, he sounded like an adult in his fifties.
He chuckled and flicked her forehead with his finger. "Is your smile really that precious? I couldn't care less."
The girl stuck her tongue out at him.
"Anyway, I'm not going to smile for Brother Donglin."
The boy shrugged, indifferent.
Then he continued to sing a tuneless song, saying nothing more.
Their figures walked along the abandoned railway on their way home, the warm glow of the setting sun enveloping them both.
Soon, the girl couldn't stay quiet any longer.
"Brother Donglin, please stop singing. It's really awful."
"What do you want me to do? Memorize addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division?"
"Do sixth graders really need to memorize addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division?"
"Of course not, because we already know them by heart."
"Then what do you want me to memorize…"
"Otherwise, what do you want me to do?"
"Talk with me."
"What do you want to talk about?"
The girl looked at the boy's profile, took a deep breath, and suddenly gathered the courage to ask, "If we grow up in the future, can I marry you?"
"Weren't you just asking that question?"
"Can’t I ask it again? As long as you don’t agree, I’ll keep asking until you get annoyed."
The boy shook his head in silence, giving up resistance with a grunt.
"Alright, I promise you. When you grow up, I’ll marry you… How about that? You should be happy now, right?"
"Yeah, happy."
The girl smiled brightly, looking at the boy's profile beside her. She giggled and said, "Brother Donglin, Sasha likes you the most."
The girl's voice gradually faded into the cold wind high above.
The two figures, hand in hand, disappeared at the end of the Abandoned Railway, stepping into the sunlight as if they had reached the end of time together.
In the depths of those childhood memories, the boy and girl continued to laugh joyfully, dancing happily side by side through each moment.
Their soft laughter seemed to linger right before him, so close yet so far away.
However, the girl in his arms had already lost her breath, leaving no warmth behind. Under the pull of the Evil God's power, she had turned into nothingness.
A cold wind blew from an unknown place high above, tousling Chu Donglin's hair.
His stiff hand trembled lightly.
Then he gently embraced the body of the girl who no longer existed, as if trying to feel her last warmth.
In the icy heights, Chu Donglin's murmurs gradually scattered into the wind.
"Brother Donglin loves you the most..." (To be continued...)
