Chapter Fifty-Three: Armored Warrior
Kuang Yun was driven to the brink of madness, his head pounding. Suddenly, he shouted, "I won't! I'm going to handle my official duties, so what? Let me tell you, don't push me too far. You're not my superior, so why should I explain myself to you?"
Hearing this, Shen Jiahe turned pale and immediately barked, "Shut up! Did you eat dog shit today? Your mouth is full of foul words; are you tired of living?"
Then, Shen Jiahe quickly turned to Sima Shangshan with a forced smile. "Sima, I apologize for my inability to manage this situation properly. Please forgive me for this madman. I will ensure he is dealt with severely."
Sima Shangshan coldly replied, "General Shen, this madman is seeking his own death. Why bother pleading for him? The Imperial Guard Headquarters has killed countless traitors; encountering a rabid dog like him, one swift strike will suffice."
The Imperial Guard Headquarters had the terrifying ability to kill openly in front of everyone. Other officials had to report and go through layers of approval before executing someone.
Upon hearing that he was to be executed, Kuang Yun lost all reason. He shouted, "Sima Shangshan, this is the territory of the Border Troops; it belongs to my Fire Departure Sect! Do you dare to kill me? I am a disciple of Jiang Duzong; who dares lay a hand on me?"
"Shut up, lunatic," Shen Jiahe seethed with anger, not expecting him to drag Jiang Duzong into this.
Sima Shangshan's expression remained cold as he commanded, "Someone, bind this fool."
"Yes."
Two of Sima Shangshan's subordinates stepped forward and bound Kuang Yun tightly. Despite his desperate struggles, he was no match for them.
After capturing Kuang Yun, one subordinate reported, "Sir, the madman Kuang Yun has been apprehended. What should we do with him?"
Sima Shangshan sneered and said, "Drag him out and execute him."
"Yes."
Two subordinates were about to take Kuang Yun away when Shen Jiahe immediately intervened, saying, "Sima, with battle imminent, killing him would bring bad luck. Why not keep Kuang Yun alive and let him redeem himself? The war is upon us; we should unite against the common enemy."
At this point, Shen Jiahe glared at Kuang Yun and said, "You beast, why aren't you bowing your head to Sima and admitting your mistakes?"
Kuang Yun nearly wet himself in fear. He quickly bowed his head and pleaded for mercy, crying out, "Sima, I was wrong. I was muddled today after drinking horse urine. Please, have mercy on me this once! I swear it won't happen again."
"Now you realize your mistake? It's too late."
"Sima, for my sake, spare this beast just this once. Let his life be used to kill enemies instead."
In terms of rank, Captain Shen and the Commander were roughly equal. However, Shen Jiahe was willing to refer to himself as a subordinate multiple times just to save Kuang Yun.
Sima Shangshan turned away, infuriated by Kuang Yun's behavior. With his temper, he would have killed Kuang Yun without hesitation. But considering he was doing this for Tang Jiner, he didn't want to be too resolute and risk Tang Jiner's reputation.
Shen Jiahe immediately looked around for someone to help plead for Kuang Yun. Unfortunately, Kuang Yun had poor relations with others and had committed many wrongdoings under the protection of Shen Jiahe; no one was willing to help him now.
Finally, Shen Jiahe's gaze fell upon Lin Feng. His eyes lit up.
Although Lin Feng had just been appointed as Vice Captain, it was rumored that he had a good relationship with the General. Moreover, as a new officer, he needed to win people's hearts; asking him for help was the best option.
Shen Jiahe said, "Lord Lin, we are colleagues; please help me plead for mercy."
Shen Jiahe's efforts to save Kuang Yun's life were not merely because he saw him as a junior brother but because Kuang Yun had helped him with many tasks and was a capable subordinate. If he were executed, it would mean losing a valuable asset and could lead to further complications. Additionally, winning people's loyalty in the military was crucial. Kuang Yun had been loyal to him; if he didn't intervene now, who would serve him in the future?
Lin Feng felt compelled to act and approached Sima Shangshan with cupped fists, saying, "General Sima, I have something to say."
Lin Feng said seriously, "Kuang Yun's tardiness and the roar of the officer are indeed deserving of punishment. However, with the war imminent, to encourage morale and unity among the soldiers, I believe that execution is somewhat inappropriate. I humbly request that you lessen the punishment a bit."
"Oh? How should we lessen it?"
"Let us spare Kuang Yun's life; I believe that under Nine Springs, Lord Kuang will surely be grateful for your great mercy."
Upon hearing this, Shen Jiahe became furious and exclaimed, "Lin Feng, how can you say such things?"
"Weren't you the one who asked this general to plead for him?"
"Where in the world is there such a plea?"
"Changing from execution to sparing his life is already a reduction in punishment, isn't it? If General Shen finds it inappropriate, then please have Lord Situ retract my previous request."
At these words, everyone couldn't help but burst into laughter. Shen Jiahe was so enraged that smoke seemed to rise from his ears. Even Sima Shangshan, who was radiating killing intent, slightly moved the corners of his mouth, revealing a faint smile.
The only one who did not laugh was Kuang Yun; regardless of the outcome, he was still facing death. He glared at Lin Feng, wishing he could kill him on the spot.
In the end, Shen Jiahe pressured everyone one by one until they had no choice but to plead for mercy. Finally, Sima Shangshan said, "Since everyone is pleading for this scoundrel and considering the faces of General Shen and Lord Lin, I will temporarily spare him from death. However, he cannot escape living punishment. Come here and drag him out for a hundred military lashes."
"Also, I will report to the General that someone like this has no qualifications to hold the position of Captain."
Kuang Yun's life was finally spared, and Shen Jiahe breathed a sigh of relief as he said, "Thank you, Sima, for your leniency. I will relieve Kuang Yun of his position and await the General's decision."
"General Shen is clear in rewards and punishments; this is indeed the way to lead troops. I admire that."
After this incident with Kuang Yun, everyone had a slightly better impression of Lin Feng. Among those present, there were not many Captains from the Fire Departure Sect. Lin Feng preferred to offend Shen Jiahe rather than plead for Kuang Yun's sake, earning everyone's respect.
Everyone knew that Lin Feng and Kuang Yun had some unresolved issues. If someone were to plead for Lin Feng, they would only be looked down upon.
Sima Shangshan continued discussing serious matters with everyone.
Generally speaking, the establishment of a battalion relies heavily on the formation of Armored Warriors.
Sima Shangshan asked, "General Shen, how many Xuanjia do we have left in Dongping County?"
Shen Jiahe replied, "There isn't a single usable set. However, there are some Low-Level Mystic Armors in storage, but they are rusty and haven't been used in decades. I'm afraid they won't be of much use."
Upon hearing this, Sima Shangshan said, "As expected. I will allocate fifty sets of Low-Level Mystic Armor to you. This batch of Xuanjia is hard to come by; I hope you can quickly form the Armored Warriors."
Hearing that Xuanjia was available, everyone's eyes lit up. Shen Jiahe expressed his gratitude, saying, "Thank you, General, for your generous gift. We will do our utmost to fight bravely."
Sima Shangshan nodded and said, "Lieutenant Lin, you are now the Vice Commander of the Horizontal Blade Camp. Since General Shen is busy with many affairs, the important task of forming the Armored Warriors is entrusted to you."
Everyone understood at once. It turned out that the General promoted Lin Feng to allow him to establish the Armored Warriors.
With battle imminent, Lin Feng knew this was not a good thing. Although he did not know what an Armored Warrior was, he still needed to focus on his cultivation and did not have time to deal with these matters.
Lin Feng said, "Sima, the people I have are all rookies. Relying on them to form the Armored Warriors is quite difficult; it might just waste time."
Sima Shangshan replied, "Lord Lin, you are mistaken. Forming the Armored Warriors is of utmost importance for the Horizontal Blade Camp. I believe Lord Shen will fully support this effort."
Shen Jiahe immediately responded, "Exactly. We will select some capable individuals from various positions and fully support the formation of the Armored Warriors."
After Sima Shangshan left, Lin Feng sincerely asked everyone about the Armored Warriors. Although they were not fond of Lin Feng being so young and holding a high position, his earlier teasing of Kuang Yun had given them some satisfaction. They wanted Lin Feng to see their rich combat experience as veterans and began to speak freely about it.
"The most important thing for an Armored Warrior in battle is to grasp the timing. Generally, once a Soldier dons the Xuanjia, they can fight for about one and a half hours. If you put on the Xuanjia too early, you will just waste your Vital Energy. However, putting it on too late is also not an option. The Demon Race has Cavalry as well, and they can charge into battle in an instant. I've seen foolish leaders who wait until the Demon Cavalry charges before ordering their troops to wear the Xuanjia, only to end up being routed by the Demon Cavalry."
"So when should we wear the Xuanjia?"
"If it's an open field encounter, it's best to don it before the battle begins. If it's a hilly battle, it depends on the situation. However, the Demon Race is quite cunning; sometimes they deliberately lure us into wearing the Xuanjia to deplete our Vital Energy. Therefore, there is no specific time for when to wear it; it must be judged according to the circumstances of the battle."
"What about the combat strength of the Demon Race?"
"The physical strength of the Demon Race far exceeds ours. But once we are clad in Xuanjia, they are at a complete disadvantage. Due to their lack of resources—material and financial—they later attempted to create their own Xuanjia, but it pales in comparison to ours."
Fortunately, one person spoke up, and everyone quickly began sharing information about Armored Warriors with Lin Feng. It wasn't to curry favor with him; rather, there was a trend of competition and boasting.
Lin Feng listened carefully, committing all the key points to memory. When he stepped onto the battlefield one day, this knowledge would be vital for his survival.
