Chapter Sixty-Two: Becoming Cannon Fodder?
Ke Kuo seemed to be quite afraid of the White-Clad Woman and quickly forced a smile, saying, "Hehe, Miss Mo, please bear with me. You see, Lin Brother is also a trusted aide of the General. We are all family here. I'm just trying to teach him to respect the General. It's all for the General's sake."
Mo Mo's expression was calm, almost dreamlike, making her seem unreal. She said, "The Ruler Is Not Secretive and Loses His Country; A Minister Who Is Not Discreet Loses His Lord. Ke Kuo, as the captain of the General's personal guard, this is the trust the General has placed in you. You should possess the awareness to keep everything confidential. Moreover, how could you disclose the General's private matters to those few untrustworthy friends outside?"
Mo Mo was as serene as a snowflake drifting down from the vast Void—pure and pristine yet imposing and unapproachable. Ke Kuo chuckled awkwardly, not daring to argue further.
Mo Mo then turned her gaze to Lin Feng and noticed he appeared somewhat dazed. Her eyes narrowed slightly, her brows furrowing, but she said nothing.
Being called an untrustworthy friend by Mo Mo made Lin Feng feel a bit displeased; however, his mind was not on that. The only thought echoing in his mind was: After you left, the General was also in a bad mood.
Could it be that Tang Jiner liked him?
Lin Feng felt a flicker of joy at this thought but quickly realized how unlikely it was. As a princess of the Tang Empire, she had met countless extraordinary individuals, while he came from humble beginnings and had mediocre cultivation skills. How could she possibly take an interest in him? Perhaps he was just overthinking due to Sima Shangshan's matter.
With that thought, Lin Feng exhaled deeply to clear his mind of unnecessary thoughts. He then asked, "Brother Ke, does the General have any further instructions?"
Ke Kuo glanced nervously at Mo Mo before replying, "There is one more thing. This is Miss Mo; with battle imminent, the General has assigned her to assist you."
"Oh? And why is that?"
"In this battle, Hengdao Ying is in a precarious situation, and the General is somewhat worried. If any crisis arises, you can relay messages through Miss Mo to the General. Miss Mo can communicate over great distances; her words are as good as the General's. Furthermore, Miss Mo has an extraordinary background; her safety is entrusted to you, Lin Brother. Even if Hengdao Ying suffers heavy losses, not a hair on Miss Mo should be harmed."
Seeing Ke Kuo so serious made Lin Feng take a closer look at Mo Mo; he hadn't expected this white-clad girl to have such an impressive background. He said, "Welcome Miss Mo to Horizontal Blade Camp; however, we are just rough folks here, so please bear with us if we fall short in our care."
Shen Jiahe was greatly shocked upon learning that Miss Mo had come to assist them. He informed Lin Feng that Miss Mo was a Mentor from Yunlu Xian Sect and that even the entire value of Horizontal Blade Camp could not compare to this Mentor.
Realizing how much importance the General placed on Horizontal Blade Camp, Shen Jiahe immediately assured her: "Miss Mo need not worry; even if there is but one soldier left in Horizontal Blade Camp, we will ensure that no demonic forces come near your esteemed self."
Mo Mo slightly bent her knees in greeting and said in a crisp voice, "Mo Mo apologizes for the trouble caused to General Shen and the brothers of the Horizontal Blade Camp."
"Not at all. With Miss Mo's support, our Horizontal Blade Camp is like a tiger with wings, and we will surely make the demon race tremble in fear," Shen Jiahe replied loudly, though a hint of a sly smile flickered in his eyes.
After Ke Kuo left, Shen Jiahe and Lin Feng carefully examined the deployment of the General's forces. From the overall military arrangement, it seemed that the enemies faced by Shen Jiahe and Lin Feng's Horizontal Blade Camp were not only the demon race but also the allied forces they needed to be wary of, namely War Maniac and Zhu Chui.
"The Governor has ordered all troops from Dongping County to rush to Xichuan County to join them in resisting the demon race. However, the Governor's intention is to have us abandon the defense of the city and charge into the Snowfield for a decisive battle against the demons. Why has the General placed us beside War Maniac?" Lin Feng pondered. After all, War Maniac was known for being reckless on the battlefield; following him was akin to being near a powder keg.
Shen Jiahe said, "Lin, I believe the General's arrangement is meant for us in the Horizontal Blade Camp to restrain War Maniac. It’s indeed a clever strategy; if we stay close to War Maniac, should he make any unusual moves, we can signal Miss Mo and take action first."
"However, while this may be convenient for the General, it spells disaster for our Horizontal Blade Camp. Our Armored Soldiers have only trained for a little over ten days; how can we possibly match up against War Maniac's seasoned troops?"
"Isn't this just making us cannon fodder?" As he spoke, Shen Jiahe looked directly at Lin Feng, wanting to gauge his thoughts.
"Could it be? How could she possibly do this to me?"
Lin Feng was startled and suddenly recalled what Ke Kuo had said.
"General, things are looking grim; you must escape quickly."
The more Lin Feng thought about it, the more uneasy he felt. Miss Mo's presence only confirmed this unsettling reality. A wave of anger surged within him. If Tang Jiner were here in person: "Lin Feng, there's an important mission I need you to undertake. Keep a close watch on War Maniac and Zhu Chui; they may pose a threat to me. If you sense anything amiss, you must act first to ensure my safety so I can confront the demon race without worry."
With such stakes involved, Lin Feng felt he would risk his life to complete this mission.
But now everything was shrouded in confusion and hidden agendas; Lin Feng suddenly felt deceived and betrayed.
This feeling was unbearable. Thus, Lin Feng was filled with rage.
Lin Feng felt disheartened and said, "When the time comes, who cares? We just need to keep our Horizontal Blade Camp intact."
"Yes, Deputy Lin's words resonate with me. If the situation turns unfavorable, we can adapt accordingly," Shen Jiahe agreed, a sly smile growing in his eyes.
After sending Shen Jiahe away, Lin Feng felt uneasy and lacked the motivation to practice. At that moment, he noticed a box in the room, which contained the High-Level Battle Armor brought by Ke Kuo. There were only two sets in the entire Horizontal Blade Camp—one belonging to Shen Jiahe and now one for Lin Feng as well.
Lin Feng picked up the Xuanjia but found it impossible to wear. He called out, "Hu Bing, have Chang Long come in."
"Yes, my lord."
Hu Bing ran off and quickly brought Chang Long back. Upon seeing the scattered Xuanjia parts and Lin Feng, who was drenched in sweat, Chang Long couldn't help but chuckle.
"My lord, the High-Level Battle Armor is much more valuable than the Low-Level Mystic Armor, and the order of wearing it is different."
"Then teach me how to wear it."
"At your command. My lord, what rank of Armored Soldier are you? If your compatibility is below the yellow grade, you won't be able to wield the High-Level Battle Armor."
"I don't know; I've never tested it."
Chang Long looked somewhat troubled. "In that case, let me explain some knowledge about Xuanjia first."
"No need; just help me put it on directly."
"My lord, if your compatibility isn't sufficient and you inject Vital Energy after wearing it, it could cause you serious harm."
"It's fine; just do it."
"Alright."
Chang Long, feeling helpless, could only obey the command. He helped Lin Feng quickly don the High-Level Battle Armor. The High-Level Battle Armor was more than ten times heavier than the Low-Level Mystic Armor, but once worn, with Vital Energy flowing and the chakra activated, Lin Feng found his movements much quicker than with the Low-Level Mystic Armor, and the strength and defense were incomparable.
The shoulder plates of the High-Level Battle Armor were shaped like two wolf heads, which was exactly the style Lin Feng liked. The entire armor was silver, with lines that were far more fluid and elegant compared to the low-level black armor, exuding a sense of dominance.
On the forearm guards, there were long, sharp fangs that glinted coldly. The battle boots also concealed hidden blades, ready to catch enemies off guard.
Wearing the armor for the first time, Lin Feng felt it was incredibly intricate. When disassembled, each piece felt overwhelmingly heavy. If it weren't for his astonishing physique, even taking a step would have been difficult. However, once all parts of the armor were combined and infused with Vital Energy, activating the chakra within, Lin Feng suddenly felt a surge of power coursing through his flesh and blood, bringing him warmth.
Soon, he felt filled with boundless strength, as if he could tear apart mountains and rivers.
As he walked, he realized that the armor was not cumbersome at all; it felt as light as clothing. Once he integrated with it, they became one.
Lin Feng shot out of the house like an arrow, leaping effortlessly and throwing punches that distorted the air.
"The ingenuity of humanity is truly astonishing."
Lin Feng marveled at this remarkable creation; with his formidable physique combined with this armor, he felt confident enough to face a Fate Realization cultivator in battle.
Chang Long watched Lin Feng move with such ease, utterly astonished and speechless.
"Chang Long, what's wrong with you?"
After just a few movements, Lin Feng felt an endless supply of energy coursing through him. Habitually, he patted Chang Long on the shoulder. Chang Long immediately tensed up and instinctively dodged away.
It was then that Lin Feng realized what had happened, but it was too late to retract his hand. Fortunately, Chang Long managed to avoid him in time; Lin Feng's hand seemed to lightly strike against the wall of the wooden house behind Chang Long.
With a loud crash, a massive hole appeared in the wooden house, and then the entire structure collapsed with a thunderous sound.
The two individuals stared at the fallen wooden house, exchanging glances.
Chang Long looked at Lin Feng with immense respect and said, "So it turns out you are a highly skilled Armored Soldier. I have truly embarrassed myself. With your level of control, you could easily be my master."
"Is that so? This is my first time wearing the Xuanjia," Lin Feng replied.
Chang Long, with disbelief on his face, responded, "You jest. When I wore the Xuanjia for the first time, it took me three whole hours just to walk. To step onto the battlefield requires months of training. To scale walls and move as you do would take a year of hard work."
No matter how Lin Feng explained, Chang Long believed he was intentionally downplaying his abilities and unwilling to reveal his background. Lin Feng, feeling helpless, could only take off the Xuanjia.
After Chang Long returned to continue his training, Lin Feng couldn't help but take out a jade stone to test his compatibility. As he continuously infused Vital Energy into it, the jade grew brighter and brighter until the green light transformed into white light, with energy becoming increasingly dense.
Finally, with a loud bang, the jade exploded.
