Chapter Seventy-Three: Mo Mo
An hour later, the soldiers of Breaking Cloud Camp retreated on their own. The first clash, though devoid of weapons, still resulted in some casualties.
Lindor approached and reported, "My lord, you saw the situation earlier. If we do not release General Wu, next time Breaking Cloud Camp comes, it will be with real weapons and intent."
Lin Feng nodded and asked, "Based on the earlier conflict, what do you think our chances are?"
Lindor's expression turned grave as he replied, "Breaking Cloud Camp is one of the strongest factions at the border, with a hundred Armored Soldiers. To be honest, we of Horizontal Blade Camp are no match for them. If their Armored Soldiers charge at us, we will have no chance at all."
"I understand. Tell the brothers that there may be a bloody battle today; those who wish to leave should do so now."
After Lin Feng finished speaking, he returned to the dungeon. Chang Long was nearing the end of his interrogation of War Maniac.
After more than an hour of torture, War Maniac appeared somewhat subdued and exhausted. When he saw Lin Feng, he did not shout but instead quietly stared back with deep-seated hatred.
Lin Feng had no time to pay attention to that; he looked at Chang Long and asked, "Chang Long, is everything settled?"
Chang Long's eyes were bloodshot; it seemed that facing a villain like War Maniac had taken its toll on him. He replied excitedly, "My lord, all the robberies were carried out under the guise of our citizens impersonating demons..."
Lin Feng interrupted impatiently, "What about the case of General Qiu?"
"He confessed," Chang Long said, unable to contain his happiness.
"Very good. Have the testimonies been confirmed? Have they been signed?" Lin Feng smiled, but that smile was colder than ice and snow.
"I'm in the middle of writing, just need to finish the last statement for the case."
Lin Feng said quietly, "The Breaking Cloud Camp is about to attack. We don't have much time. As long as General Qiu's case is signed and confessed, we can let the others go."
"General Qiu's case is already finished," Chang Long replied.
"Then let's close the case," Lin Feng instructed.
"Alright."
Chang Long approached the person writing the statement and urged him to hastily finish the last sentence before summarizing it. He then took the statement to War Maniac and said, "General Wu, please sign here."
War Maniac, seasoned from many battles, revealed a slight smirk. He slowly replied, "What's the rush? This statement is several pages long; I want to read it thoroughly from start to finish. What if you added something to frame me?"
Chang Long knew that War Maniac was just stalling for time and sneered, "It seems General Wu has been comfortable for a while and has forgotten what just happened. Do you need me to help you relive that experience?"
Seeing the torture instruments in Chang Long's hand, War Maniac's face twitched involuntarily. After a moment of silence, he said, "Fine, give it to me. I'll sign."
Watching War Maniac finally sign on the lengthy statement, Lin Feng let out a sigh of relief. He could finally kill this man in good conscience to avenge Li Daye, which would also ease his own heart and eliminate a threat to Tang Jiner.
With the evidence in hand, Lin Feng commanded, "Chang Long, take everyone out to face the enemy. I'll handle the rest."
"Yes, my lord." Chang Long bowed and then left with his men.
War Maniac looked up at Lin Feng with a cunning smile and asked, "Li Daye, did my subordinates break in?"
"Lin Feng turned around, quietly looking at War Maniac and said, 'Not bad, your elite troops are attacking my Horizontal Blade Camp.'
War Maniac couldn't help but break into a triumphant laugh. 'Li Daye, you can't kill me. Even if I confess today, no one in this borderland can take my head. Once I'm out of here, I will surely tear you to pieces.'
'Too bad you won't have the chance,' Lin Feng said with a chilling expression, drawing out the Moon City Sword and stepping closer to War Maniac. 'Evil deeds bring evil retribution, War Maniac. Today is your reckoning.'
War Maniac's smile suddenly froze, fear creeping into his eyes. He widened his gaze and exclaimed, 'What... what are you going to do? Do you dare to kill a court official? That's a death sentence!'
Lin Feng stood before War Maniac, placing the Moon City Sword against his neck. 'Do you know my name before I kill you today?'
'Aren't you Li Daye?' War Maniac replied, puzzled by Lin Feng's sudden question.
Lin Feng showed a look of surprise. 'Under normal circumstances, only you know that I am called Li Daye. This is a top secret of the Tang Empire; today, you can only die.'
'You...' War Maniac was left speechless, frustrated at being toyed with by Lin Feng even in his last moments.
'Go to hell and accompany General Qiu and Brother Li Daye in death.'
Just as Lin Feng was about to strike, a clear voice came from behind him.
'Lord Lin, please hold your hand.'
Lin Feng turned around to see a graceful woman in a white dress standing before him. The dress was embroidered with orchids; it was Mo Mo.
'So it's Miss Mo. What brings you to such a filthy place?' Lin Feng asked with a puzzled expression."
“War Maniac has already confessed, and his crimes deserve punishment. If Lord Lin kills him privately, it would be tantamount to plotting against a court official. Lord Lin is a highly valued subordinate of the General, with a bright future ahead. One must not act impulsively and disappoint the General's expectations.” Mo Mo spoke softly, her voice quiet and sweet.
Lin Feng thought to himself that if he let War Maniac go, given his relationship with Jiang Wannian, he might not be able to convict him. In that case, it would be his own life at stake. Moreover, Tang Jiner would also be implicated. Lin Feng made up his mind and said, “Miss Mo, this matter does not concern you. Please leave this filthy place.”
Mo Mo did not leave; instead, she moved gracefully and suddenly appeared right in front of Lin Feng. She said, “The General sent me to Dongping County to keep an eye on you. War Maniac is already a dead man; exchanging the head of a doomed man for the life of a subordinate of the General is something the General would never agree to. I command you to stand down in the name of the General.”
“Miss Mo, you must know that Breaking Cloud Camp is currently preparing to attack the camp. If they rescue War Maniac, it would be like letting a tiger return to the mountain. I am eliminating a threat for the General.”
Mo Mo remained calm and replied lightly, “Lord Lin need not worry about anyone breaking into the prison. The camp is under my watch; you can rest easy.”
Although Lin Feng had heard that Mentor was formidable, he had never seen Mentor in action. He couldn't help but laugh and said, “Miss Mo, you have great confidence. There are a hundred Armored Soldiers outside, and Zhu Chui is secretly commanding them. I would advise you to step aside; I wouldn’t want this scoundrel’s blood to stain your fine clothes.”
“Lord Lin, are you disregarding the General's words?” Mo Mo frowned slightly.
“I am eliminating a threat for the General and feel no guilt in my heart. This matter will end here; I will take responsibility before the General afterward.”
Mo Mo suddenly shouted, “The General is already very angry knowing about your reckless actions. Your presumptuousness has caused much trouble for the General. Reinforcements will arrive soon; Breaking Cloud Camp is not a concern. Will you not put down your sword?”
“The General absolutely cannot lead troops here; internal strife among our forces would only benefit the demon clan. Only by killing this man can we resolve the issue at its source. I will bear this alone. If it comes to it and they want my head, I will accept it.”
With that, Lin Feng swung his sword toward War Maniac's neck. Before he could exert force, he felt darkness enveloping him. When he opened his eyes again, he found himself on a vast Snowfield.
The Snowfield stretched endlessly before him, covered in a blanket of white snow as far as the eye could see. The cold wind howled past him, sending shivers down Lin Feng's spine.
Standing on this desolate expanse of Snowfield and gazing up at the vast sky above, Lin Feng suddenly felt so insignificant. Then a wave of drowsiness washed over him; unable to resist, he collapsed into the snow and fell into a deep sleep.
Lin Feng did not know how long he had been asleep, but when he woke up again, he found himself lying on his own Soft Couch. The winter morning sunlight streamed through the window, but Lin Feng felt it was a bit blinding.
Suddenly, Lin Feng remembered something and sprang up from the couch. "Damn it, Mo Mo took me down! I don't know what kind of sorcery she used."
He hurried towards the camp. After a night of chaos at the Horizontal Blade Camp, there was no training scheduled for today. The camp was eerily quiet, with few people in sight.
"Where is everyone? They can't all be dead, can they?" Lin Feng thought to himself, feeling a twinge of fear.
"Hu Bing, Lindor, Chang Long? Where are you guys?"
As Lin Feng walked, he called out loudly.
