Chapter 11: The Fallen Red Petal
Just as the sword lunged toward Lin Feng's chest with astonishing speed, a red figure, like a falling petal, suddenly descended.
The water-blue sword pierced through the red petal and then tore through Lin Feng's clothing, embedding itself into his flesh.
Fortunately, the red petal had provided some resistance, and Lin Feng's physique was remarkable. The water-blue longsword could only penetrate his flesh but could not advance any further.
"Just a little more."
He Rongsheng felt a surge of unwillingness as the incantation continued to operate, and vital energy flowed into her hands once again. Then she forcefully pushed the Blue Longsword.
In that brief moment of change, Lin Feng finally managed to grasp the blade of the Blue Longsword. This was a Ninth-Grade Treasure, sharp beyond compare. It sliced through Lin Feng's hands, slowly pushing deeper.
Lin Feng gripped the sword blade tightly, unable to suppress the blood that spilled from his mouth.
"Still just a little more."
He Rongsheng did not expect Lin Feng's physique to be so formidable, his grip even more powerful. If it had been anyone else's hands that touched her Blue Longsword, they would have been severed in two.
As He Rongsheng prepared to channel more vital energy, Lin Miaomiao struck her fist against He Rongsheng's chest. With a resounding thud, a tremendous force sent He Rongsheng flying along with the sword.
As He Rongsheng was propelled away, the Blue Longsword was pulled from Lin Feng's body, splattering blood everywhere.
Lin Miaomiao's eyes were filled with intense killing intent as she wielded the Purple Twilight Sword, fully unleashing her cultivation. A vast amount of vital energy gathered behind her, forming a desolate landscape.
Before the anomaly could fully take shape, Lin Miaomiao brandished the Purple Twilight Sword and charged at He Rongsheng, who had fallen out of the house.
He Rongsheng hurriedly retreated, saying as he backed away, "I am killing this scum today for your sake. One day, you will understand my intentions."
Lin Miaomiao remained silent, her mind focused solely on one thought: to kill this man. The Vital Energy within her coalesced into a desert, and Lone Smoke rose, signifying the Solitary Moon City and the Manifestation of Divine Powers—Desolate Smoke in the Desert.
The Manifestation of Divine Powers often represented the final and most powerful strike of a Fate Realization practitioner. Lin Miaomiao had no intention of holding back in her pursuit of He Rongsheng.
"Even if you treat me this way, I will not meet you in battle," He Rongsheng declared.
With that, he produced a jade slip and crushed it. A brilliant green light flashed momentarily before fading away, along with He Rongsheng's voice.
"Azure Cloud Sect. He Rongsheng."
For the first time in her life, Lin Miaomiao felt such intense killing intent towards a name. Worried about Lin Feng's injuries, she immediately turned back.
At that moment, a sudden appearance of red petals lost their crimson glow, revealing their true form—a young girl dressed in a red gown, looking innocent and delicate.
"Magenta?"
"It's you?"
Lin Feng and Lin Miaomiao exclaimed simultaneously.
Magenta's face was extremely pale, cold sweat streaming down her delicate features. Blood continuously trickled from the corner of her mouth. Trembling, she asked, "Young Master, are you alright?"
"You fool, asking me if there's anything wrong when you're hurt like this!"
Lin Feng sighed. Ignoring his own injuries, he picked up Magenta and carefully placed her on Lin Miaomiao's Soft Couch. Then he turned to Lin Miaomiao and said, "Miaomiao, saving people is your strength. I'm leaving her to you."
"What about your injuries?" Lin Miaomiao asked, looking at the blood-soaked fabric on Lin Feng's chest.
Lin Feng gritted his teeth against the pain and replied, "It's just a flesh wound. You know I’m tough; saving her is more important."
"Don't worry. I need to loosen her clothes a bit; you should step outside."
"Alright."
Lin Feng walked out of the room and with a wave of his hand, the door to the opposite room flew open and landed against Lin Miaomiao's shattered door, blocking everything inside.
Thinking back to the earlier peril, if it weren't for Magenta risking her life to block that sword for him, his own life would have been in jeopardy. He Rongsheng's strike was indeed overwhelming, piercing through Magenta's Cultivation-illusioned petals and could have penetrated Lin Feng's flesh as well.
A chilling anger rose within Lin Feng as he muttered to himself, "He Rongsheng, you are indeed strong. But this Journey to the Central Plains is just for your farewell."
The hatred could only be buried deep within his heart, waiting for an opportunity. The Azure Cloud Sect was the foremost sect in Zhongzhou and even across the Nine Provinces. Challenging them directly would not only fail to avenge him but would also lead to his own demise.
At that moment, Elder Lin and Elder He rushed over upon hearing the commotion, asking what had happened. Lin Feng didn't want them to know about these matters; besides, even if they did know, what could these two elders do to help?
"It's nothing. I lost my focus while practicing my swordsmanship and injured myself," Lin Feng said lightly.
The two elders could tell that Lin Feng was not being truthful, but they were not particularly concerned about an unnamed disciple from a monument. Elder Lin said, "Be more careful in the future. Did Lin Miaomiao get hurt?"
“Miaomiao, it’s nothing. She has already fallen asleep,” Lin Feng replied.
“In that case, you should rest early as well.”
After exchanging a few words, the two elders left. Along the way, Yue Zhuofeng seemed somewhat distracted, knowing that today’s commotion was related to He Rongsheng.
Lin Feng waited outside for nearly an hour and a half before Lin Miaomiao finally opened the door.
“How is she?” Lin Feng immediately asked.
“She wasn’t injured in any vital areas. I used some spiritual herbs to stabilize her condition. She needs to rest,” Lin Miaomiao replied.
Lin Feng let out a sigh of relief. “That’s good to hear.”
Lin Miaomiao looked at Lin Feng and asked, “Who exactly is she? Why would she risk her life for you?”
“Honestly, I didn’t expect her to act like that either,” Lin Feng said as he carefully described Magenta's background.
Lin Miaomiao listened quietly, and after a moment of silence, she said, “It’s astonishing that such a peculiar sect still exists in this world. She saved your life today, which is a great favor to both of us. However, gratitude aside, there are some things that cannot be compromised. What about you, Lin Feng?”
“That goes without saying. So I intend to keep my distance from her,” Lin Feng responded promptly.
Lin Miaomiao nodded and fell silent for a moment before saying, “In that case, when she wakes up, we should treat her as our friend. There’s no need for her to demean herself by becoming a servant.”
“Is that… really okay?” Lin Feng asked.
"Everything depends on your mindset. I believe in you," Lin Miaomiao said with a smile.
"That's good to hear," Lin Feng replied.
"What I mean is that she is just my friend. And you cannot be alone with her, cannot have her do things for you, cannot laugh with her too often—there are many things you simply cannot do. Do you understand? If you violate this, I might just hit you," Lin Miaomiao said, pretending to be stern.
"You don't need to act like a tiger; I will listen to you," Lin Feng answered with a laugh.
Lin Miaomiao pondered, "Actually, we should find her another partner. That way, we can completely solve her problem and also repay her in some way."
"That's a good idea. Sima Shangshan seems like a decent guy."
"Although he listens to his family a bit too much, he really is a good person. Is it him?"
"Yes, it's him."
The two exchanged smiles and began to devise a plan to bring the two together.
The next day, Yue Zhuofeng went out early and chose a large courtyard in the capital, paying a year's rent upfront. He returned home in high spirits and instructed everyone to start moving.
There weren't many servants at Lone Moon Villa, and they were all busy and flustered. After five hours of work, they finally got everything sorted out. Just as they were about to leave for the core capital of the Great Zhou Empire, a young man blocked the entrance of Lone Moon Villa.
"What do you want?" Yue Zhuofeng asked with an annoyed expression.
The boy looked up and quietly said to Yue Zhuofeng, "My name is Xiao Ran, and I am here to challenge Lin Miaomiao."
“Ranking on the Stele Fifteenth place for Xiao Ran?” Yue Zhuofeng asked in surprise.
“Indeed,” Xiao Ran replied.
On the stele, Xiao Ran ranked among the lesser-known Foundation peak Cultivators. This generation had an abundance of young powerhouses. In the past, there were only about ten well-known Foundation peak Cultivators. With Xiao Ran’s level of Cultivation, he would have easily made it into the top ten in previous times.
This generation was referred to as a golden age for the youth. It boasted rare physiques like the Eye of Destiny and the Ethereal Body, along with other powerful young Cultivators.
This generation could rival that of the Solitary Moon City Sword Saint, and in some ways, they even surpassed it.
Yue Zhuofeng said solemnly, “Do you understand the consequences of failure in this challenge?”
“I do, but I came here with unwavering confidence,” Xiao Ran stated.
At that moment, Lin Feng, Lin Miaomiao, and Lu Wushuang stepped out. Upon realizing his intentions, they were slightly taken aback; they hadn’t expected someone to challenge during the Jiuzhou Gathering Conference.
After their initial surprise, upon learning that Xiao Ran was from the Azure Cloud Sect and a junior disciple of He Rongsheng, a glint of killing intent appeared in Lin Feng and Lin Miaomiao’s eyes.
Yue Zhuofeng turned to Lin Miaomiao and said, “Miaomiao, you can refuse. There’s no need for unnecessary contests before the conference.”
“No, I accept his challenge,” Lin Miaomiao replied calmly.
Lin Feng noticed the killing intent and displeasure in Miaomiao’s eyes. He said, “Miaomiao, you must treat today’s challenge as a simple contest. The mountain ahead is too steep; we can only carve our way slowly.”
Lin Miaomiao understood what Lin Feng meant. She replied, “I understand. However, swords and blades have no eyes; getting hurt is inevitable.”
"That's only natural," Lin Feng replied, reaching a consensus.
Yue Zhuofeng saw that Lin Miaomiao had made up her mind. He sighed and then looked at Xiao Ran across from him. "Since you insist on challenging, according to the rules, it needs to be reported to the Governor."
"I already visited the Governor before I came here and left my mark."
"In that case, let’s begin. We will compete right here in Lone Moon Villa, since it will also be a place of relocation."
Yue Zhuofeng said nothing further but quietly walked into the villa. He reached the center of an open area, holding a dark iron long sword in his right hand. With both hands clasped in a fist, he addressed Lin Miaomiao, "Xiao Ran, disciple of Azure Cloud Sect, please enlighten me." (To be continued)
