Chapter 189: Entering Baytai
"I am a bit curious, why does the Ouyang Family value me so highly?" Lin Feng asked, a puzzled expression on his face.
Elder Ouyang smiled and said, "As business people, we assess the potential of future strong individuals. It seems that Lin Commander is unaware of his own worth. Our Ouyang Family has predicted that in the coming Centennial, six individuals will dominate the Jiuzhou Continent. Lin Commander is among them. How could we dare to treat such a person lightly?"
"Oh? Who are the six?" Lin Feng inquired. "The Guan Family, Xiao Mi, Cold Rain, Qi Wan'er, and the Four Great Masters?"
Elder Ouyang shook his head. "Among the Four Great Masters, only the Guan Family possesses significant financial power and will hold a prominent position in the future Centennial. The other four are at best merely high-ranking figures."
"My cultivation is not on par with the Four Great Masters, and I lack a powerful background. If they are not included, how could I possibly be among them?" Lin Feng was even more confused.
"It is rumored that Lin Commander has entered the Divine Ruins. Just this alone is enough for you to be considered one of the future dominators of the continent," Elder Ouyang said wisely, as if he knew Lin Feng was pretending to be oblivious.
"I see. I just don't know where this rumor originated."
Lin Feng neither denied nor confirmed it but instead asked, "I want to know who ranks first among the six?"
"That is, of course, a secret."
Elder Ouyang replied without hesitation. When he saw the disappointed expression on Lin Feng's face, he revealed a cunning smile and added, "However, since we regard Lin Commander as a friend, there need be no secrets."
"Haha, that's great," Lin Feng said with a bright smile.
"Our Ouyang Family believes that among the younger generation, Master Da is undoubtedly the foremost."
Lin Feng nodded upon hearing this. "Master Shenyu. He truly deserves to be first."
"Then what about the second?" Lin Feng asked immediately.
"The second is naturally Mo Pinglan from the Yunlu Xian Sect. The Ghost Map of the Demon Clan, the Magic One of the Demon Sect, and the Eternal Thought from Pujue Temple belong to the third tier. After that, disciples of the Master of the Divine Ruins fall into the fourth tier, the Sword Saint is in the fifth tier, and the sixth tier consists of the Four Great Masters."
"I see," Lin Feng understood.
Elder Ouyang continued, "To be honest, we initially placed Lin Commander, Princess Jian'an of the Tang Dynasty, General Wind Spirit of Wind Nation, He Rongsheng from Azure Cloud Sect, Lin Miaomiao of Ethereal Body, and the Crown Prince of the Great Zhou in the Seventh Rank. Among these individuals, the one with the weakest cultivation is the Crown Prince of the Great Zhou. However, considering the strength of the Great Zhou, he was included. As for Lin Commander, due to insufficient cultivation and his connection with Divine Ruins, he was removed from the Seventh Rank."
Seeing Lin Feng deep in thought, Elder Ouyang chuckled, "These are merely speculations from our Ouyang Family. The reality may not necessarily be so. You can take it lightly and not take it to heart."
"The Ouyang Family indeed has hidden talents."
After some pleasantries, they took their leave. Lin Feng watched Elder Ouyang's disappearing figure and couldn't help but let out a long sigh. His inner garments were soaked with sweat; although today's negotiations seemed easy, Lin Feng had endured immense pressure.
Elder Ouyang was a powerful cultivator at the Master Realm; facing his coercion and threats could have led others to their demise on the spot.
Yet Lin Feng had no other choice. He took out a piece of rice paper and slowly unfolded it:
Lin Feng:
You have been in the Northern Frontier for over a month now. I wonder how you are doing and if you can handle the situation there. Due to the demon clan's full-scale assault, our southern region has completely fallen. The demon clan has captured several major counties in our Tang Dynasty and is now poised to attack Chang'an.
Due to consecutive battles, our army has suffered heavy losses. The Tang Dynasty's treasury is beginning to run dry; if this continues, our soldiers will have no food to sustain them, no weapons in hand, and no armor for protection—how can we face our enemies?
Among the Demon Army, there are also some barbarian tribes. Since its founding, our Tang Dynasty has never faced such an existential crisis as today.
Lin Feng, if one day our Tang Dynasty falls, my only hope is that before I die, I can meet you one last time.
If not for life and death, I would not write in this lifetime.
Tang Jiner.
This letter had been received by Lin Feng for several days. He had read it many times and kept it tucked in his pocket. Each time he read it, he couldn't help but fall into deep thought.
Lin Feng gazed towards the direction of Chang'an, murmuring, "Princess, you have shown me kindness, and I, Lin Feng, will surely not betray your trust."
That evening, Lin Feng took the token gifted by the Guan Family and found their branch office. The next day, he headed to the border to trade with Elder Ouyang.
The silver and Xuanjia he obtained were immediately dispatched by the Guan Family's people at the fastest speed to the capital of the Tang Dynasty, Chang'an.
Watching the caravan depart in a grand procession, Lin Feng said, "Princess, I hope these supplies can alleviate the urgent needs of the Tang."
Two days later, Lin Feng set out alone for Baytai. That was the territory of the Ouyang Family. It was rumored that Baytai was one of the most prosperous places on the Jiuzhou Continent. After receiving silver from the Ouyang Family and ensuring smooth trade, he decided to see this so-called thriving metropolis.
Lin Feng summoned Liu Quan and Chen Guang, briefed them on his plans, and then left Yanmen City under the guise of a secret mission.
Baytai boasted a prosperity akin to that of Chang'an's Gaojing but with a different flavor. There were no bustling crowds or clattering carts here.
The people of Baytai were in a state of quiet leisure. Along the Great Dao stood century-old shops without any hawking voices. Strollers ambled along, entering shops that caught their fancy.
Truly a place of immense wealth in Jiuzhou, steeped in thousands of years of history. The elegance of its people and the historical ambiance of the city were not mere imitations; they stemmed from their true essence.
Only in such a place where one is free from worries about food and clothing, living a life of abundance and contentment, could such an atmosphere be cultivated.
Baytai was a metropolis of goods, showcasing a dazzling array of products. It was divided into areas for mortals and those for Walkers. Even items from demonic clans or Buddhist sects could be found here.
Lin Feng was wandering around when he noticed a group of people ahead, dressed in loose clothing with long, slender swords at their waists. They had shaved heads and sported strange hairstyles. Their short stature and peculiar, aggressive gazes made them stand out.
"What kind of people are these? So arrogant?"
"You don't know? They are the Samurai from the Eastern Kingdom. Rumor has it they came across the sea."
As he listened to the murmurs, Lin Feng approached. He saw the Samurai surrounding two young girls, their eyes filled with lewdness, desire swelling on their faces.
"Damn it, people from the Eastern Land."
Lin Feng walked over and asked, "Hey, what are you guys doing?"
He couldn't help but laugh; having watched too many war films, he found himself joking inappropriately.
The Eastern Samurai began jabbering at Lin Feng aggressively, pushing him back.
"What are you even saying?" Lin Feng couldn't understand them at all.
The leader of the Samurai was furious, gripping the hilt of his sword. Quick as lightning, Lin Feng seized his right hand, rendering the Samurai unable to move.
As they were locked in this standoff, two more Eastern Samurai closed in. One of them said, "Duhen-kun, don't be impulsive. Killing here in Baytai would be detrimental to us."
"Baka!" The Samurai was infuriated to the extreme. He wanted to draw his sword and turn Lin Feng into minced meat but found himself unable to break free from Lin Feng's grip.
The two Samurai continued to persuade Duhen-kun while glaring at Lin Feng. "How dare you provoke Duhen-kun? You need to apologize right now."
"Apologize? Sure."
Lin Feng sneered and bowed to the Eastern Samurai, saying, "What the hell are you doing? Are you dead? How did you become such a beast?"
"Baka."
Even the two samurai who were trying to mediate could hardly contain their anger. The warriors who had bullied the two girls released them and drew their swords, charging forward.
Lin Feng looked around and spotted an alley not far away. He leisurely made his way toward it, with the Eastern Samurai hot on his heels.
After a short while, Lin Feng clapped his hands and walked out of the alley, looking relaxed. Passersby couldn't help but glance inside; the samurai were all lying on the ground, battered and bruised.
"They sure make a lot of noise but fight like cowards," Lin Feng remarked as he casually walked away.
At that moment, a tinkling voice called out, "Young Master, please wait."
Lin Feng turned to see a young woman in a green dress approaching. He recognized her as one of the two girls who had just been surrounded.
"Hello, is there something you need?" Lin Feng asked politely.
The Green-Dressed Woman replied, "Thank you for your help earlier. My sister wants to thank you in person."
Lin Feng looked over and saw the other girl not far away. There seemed to be a faint mist surrounding her face, making it hard to see her true features.
"It was nothing; I just couldn't stand those Eastern Samurai," Lin Feng said dismissively.
As he turned to leave, the Green-Dressed Woman blocked his path and insisted, "Young Master, my sister insists on thanking you in person. Please, I beg you."
"Alright," Lin Feng said, seeing her somewhat pitiful expression and not wanting to make things difficult for her.
The girl in green led Lin Feng closer and said, "Sister, this young man has brought me here."
The young woman smiled gently and slightly bent her knees, saying, "Thank you for your help, young man."
"No need to be polite..."
As Lin Feng spoke, he found himself very close to the young woman and couldn't help but exclaim, "It's you?"
This was the same woman he had encountered at the Azure Wind Mountain Range when he met the Red-Butt Macaque. He remembered that the Stone Pearl he possessed had a significant connection to her.
"Oh? Do we know each other?" the young woman asked.
"I don't think so. My name is Lin Feng. What about you?" Lin Feng smiled as he asked. At that time, he was just an inconspicuous person, so she certainly wouldn't remember him.
"My name is Ling Er," the young woman replied.
Just as Lin Feng was about to speak again, several Constables arrived and restrained his hands. Confused, Lin Feng asked, "What are you doing?"
"An outsider has accused you of robbery," one Constable said.
"Robbery? You've got it wrong."
"We have witnesses and evidence. Are you still going to deny it? Take him away."
"Hey! Are you serious? It was those Eastern Samurai who were bullying a weak woman, and I helped her out!"
"You've just admitted your crime. Very well. Come with me to the Prison to sign some documents."
"When did we ever admit that?"
"Since you've already admitted it, let's not waste any more time. We should wrap this up quickly," the Constable urged.
"Is this how you officials in Baytai handle cases?"
"If you want to suffer a bit before signing, that's fine too."
"Suffer? I'm quite curious to see what that looks like."
Lin Feng sneered. If he were to end up in prison and endure torture, wouldn't Elder Ouyang have to pay a hefty medical bill? Not too much, just cheat him out of a hundred thousand taels, that would do. (To be continued...)
