Chapter 197: Northern Frontier - Good News
After several days of skirmishes, the Wind Army launched a full-scale attack on the fifth day of battle.
In the early morning, a thick fog enveloped the area.
Armored vessels filled the entire River Noodle, resembling a massive shadow pressing through the mist toward the ferry.
The Tang army's sentinels immediately sounded the alarm, their voices trembling as they shouted, "They're coming! The Wind Army is launching a major offensive!"
As the alarm rang out, Lin Feng was the first to burst out of his tent. He looked at the multitude of armored vessels on the sea surface, far greater than just a few days prior. At that moment, Lin Feng understood that the Wind Army had delayed their attack not only to test their patience but also to await more armored units from Wind Nation.
Seeing the enormous shadow before them, fear gripped the hearts of everyone in the Tang army, and they tightly clutched their weapons in anxiety.
"All commanders, take your positions immediately and prepare to slay the enemy!" Lin Feng roared at the Tang generals.
As the first row of armored vessels reached the shore, before they could even stabilize, a large group of Armored Soldiers leaped from the decks and surged toward the land.
"Xuan Bow Crossbow, prepare! Fire at will!"
With Lin Feng's command, a flurry of arrows whistled through the air. Thousands of arrows etched with forceful patterns rained down like dark clouds upon the advancing Wind Nation Armored Soldiers.
The front line of Armored Soldiers had barely steadied themselves when they were struck. Some fell dead on the spot, while others tumbled into the river's depths. Yet some continued forward, wading through water in an attempt to breach the Tang army's defenses.
Lin Feng had dug deep trenches filled with mud and traps. The Wind Army's Armored Soldiers struggled within these trenches, rolling and tumbling while facing deadly fire from Xuan arrows.
The Wind Spirit had not anticipated that the Tang army would dig such deep trenches filled not only with mud but also with spikes and other hazards. Seeing many of their Xuanjia damaged and realizing that breaching the Tang camp to disrupt their formation was nearly impossible in such a short time, the Wind Spirit quickly ordered the Shield Bearers to assist the Armored Soldiers in their assault.
The Shield Bearer, wielding the Magic Shield, moved with incredible speed. He charged forward and positioned himself in front of the Armored Soldier. As a result, the casualties among the Wind Army's Armored Soldiers significantly improved.
"The Armored Soldiers are advancing, aiming to eliminate the Wind Army's Shield Bearer."
"Understood."
Just as the Tang Army's Armored Soldiers were about to move out, they caught sight of a golden figure streaking past them like a flash of light, moving at an unbelievable speed.
"What was that? So fast!"
When the Armored Soldiers regained their composure, they saw Lin Feng clad in Golden Armor plunging into the trench they had dug. He wielded a Ninth-Rank Sword in each hand, attacking anyone in his path.
The soldiers of the Tang Army had never witnessed a Commander-level figure engaging in battle. Watching Lin Feng navigate through the enemy ranks as if they were nonexistent ignited their fighting spirit.
"Brothers, how can we let the Governor take down the Wind Army all by himself? I won't do it alone; will you agree?" Chen Guang rallied loudly.
"We won't agree."
"Then let's charge together! Kill one to break even, kill two to profit!"
The Tang Army's Armored Soldiers shed their fear. Each one seemed to have gained immense courage. Initially hesitant about the trench, they now felt no apprehension.
The Tang Army's Xuanjia also became mired in mud as they clashed with the Wind Army's Shield Bearer. Despite having the Magic Shield for protection, the Shield Bearer's combat effectiveness was far inferior to that of the Armored Soldiers.
In a single encounter, countless Wind Army Shield Bearers fell. The Armored Soldiers behind them watched their comrades collapse nearby and were filled with rage, charging forward at full speed.
Just as the two armies' Xuanjia were about to collide, Lin Feng suddenly ordered, "All Xuanjia retreat. Withdraw immediately. Xuan Nu, prepare to shoot."
"Sir, I'm not done killing yet. Today's battle has been quite enjoyable. It seems the Wind Army isn't as terrifying as rumored."
"Stop the nonsense and retreat when I say so!" Chen Guang shouted angrily.
All the Armored Soldiers of the Tang army immediately retreated. Just as they reached the open ground, Lin Feng commanded loudly, "Xuan Nu, fire!"
Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh...
The towering Xuan Nu, as thick as a man's arm, launched its bolts from a crossbow that was half the size of a house. Each shot unleashed a Thunderous Roar.
The massive bolts struck into the ranks of the Wind Army's Armored Soldiers, piercing through their bodies directly.
The Wind Army's Armored Soldiers let out piercing screams, suffering countless casualties, and it seemed they were on the verge of annihilation.
At that moment, the Wind Army's Xuan Nu arrived just in time, and the second batch of Armored Soldiers landed as well. At Wind Spirit's command, the Xuan Nu unleashed terrifying Vital Energy Power toward the Tang army's position.
The fearsome Xuan Nu rendered all Walkers below Master Realm unable to protect themselves. In the first wave of Xuan Nu fire, hundreds to thousands fell dead on the Tang side.
Then came the second wave of Xuan Nu raining down.
"Attack."
After Lin Feng spoke, a beam of golden light shot from him; it was Spirit Monkey. It instantly grew to half the height of a mountain, radiating blinding golden light.
This golden light enveloped all the Tang soldiers. The bolts from the Xuan Nu fell into this golden aura and vanished with a faint sound, unable to penetrate the protective glow emanating from Lin Feng.
Seeing that the Xuan Nu of Wind Nation had lost its effectiveness, Wind Spirit exclaimed in surprise, "What a powerful defensive Spirit Monkey!"
The Wind Spirit unleashed all her cultivation, activating the royal forbidden technique. An endless Imperial Aura surged from the royal lineage of the Wind Nation, forming substantial golden beams of light that flowed into her body. In an instant, the Wind Spirit's cultivation reached the Master Realm.
With the Golden Sword in hand, she swiftly traversed the void, closing in on the Spirit Monkey, engaging in a life-and-death duel.
Lin Feng, worried for their safety, commanded, "General Chen, hurry and assist."
"Yes."
Chen Guang wasted no time unleashing all his cultivation, charging into the aerial battle with his own manifestation. The Wind Spirit, having received the royal inheritance and activated the royal enhancement forbidden technique, maintained an astonishing level of power for a brief moment. Facing one person and one monkey, she showed no signs of losing ground.
Lin Feng had no time to concern himself with the battle in the Void; at this moment, it was a fight for survival where any strategy was futile—only the brave would prevail in this narrow encounter.
Lin Feng summoned Longing Tears, unleashing a flurry of Ninth-Grade Flying Swords that descended upon the Wind Army with terrifying might. At this point, Lin Feng was at the Enlightenment Realm, unlike during his Fate Realization phase. He could only utilize the inherent power of the Ninth-Grade Treasure. Now, however, he could draw upon Earth Qi to greatly enhance the might of the Ninth-Grade Flying Swords.
The power of Longing Tears overshadowed Xuan Nu as it rained down upon the Wind Army, causing countless Feng Army soldiers to perish.
At that moment, all Master Realm generals of the Feng Army mobilized, wielding Ninth-Grade Treasures and charging forward with their manifestations. Lin Feng had anticipated this situation.
The number of Master Realm generals in Tang's army was far fewer than that of the Wind Army. Lin Feng did not allow them to engage directly; instead, he personally activated the Mysterious War Chariot and Xuan Nu's might.
Master Realm wielders controlling these formidable weapons multiplied their power. Waves of terrifying force spread through the air like a tide, temporarily preventing the Master Realm generals of Wind Nation from advancing.
Although the Wind Spirit held an advantage, it was nearly impossible for her to defeat both Spirit Monkey and Chen Guang in such a short time. Activating forbidden techniques also inflicted tremendous backlash upon herself.
Looking below, countless Wind Army soldiers fell lifelessly to the ground without escape. The Wind Spirit decisively retreated, using her supreme Divine Ability to shield the entire Wind Army as she led them back to safety atop their battle armor.
"They're retreating! We won! We won!"
Fifty Thousand Troops faced with the general's army of one hundred fifty thousand, successfully repelled the enemy's fierce attack. The Tang soldiers were invigorated and excited, almost unable to believe it.
Especially the Flowing Cloud Sect’s Northern Frontier Soldiers, who had witnessed the might of the Wind Spirit’s direct troops, were left powerless after being thoroughly beaten, making it even harder for them to believe what had just happened.
“Long live Lin Commander!”
Someone shouted out loud. All the Northern Frontier soldiers roared from the depths of their hearts, “Long live Lin Commander!”
Standing on the deck, Wind Spirit looked at the cheering Tang army across from her and revealed a hint of a helpless smile, saying, “In this battle, I fear we have lost.”
The vice commander Mulan protested, “Your Highness, why do you say that? Our main force has yet to engage. Although our vanguard troops have sacrificed themselves, our numbers still far exceed those of the Tang army.”
Wind Spirit replied calmly, “The Northern Frontier Flowing Cloud Sect forces were already severely weakened by us and lacked fighting spirit, ripe for slaughter. Yet now, under Lin Feng’s command, they have displayed such astonishing combat effectiveness. The enemy’s Lin Feng is an excellent leader, skilled in military strategy and adept at winning over the hearts of his troops. Being defeated by such a remarkable leader is not a disgrace.”
“Convey my orders: everyone prepare to retreat.”
“Your Highness, we have slain nearly half of the Tang army’s Northern Frontier Soldiers, and now only these fifty thousand remnants remain. Are we really going to let go of this opportunity to completely defeat them?” Mulan looked at the blood spilled by the Wind Army, feeling unwilling to give up.
Wind Spirit said solemnly, “If the remaining Northern Frontier Soldiers were as weak as the previous Flowing Cloud Sect forces, we could indeed send our troops to eliminate them.”
“However, the current Northern Frontier Army possesses incredible fighting strength. They also hold the advantage of terrain, making them easy to defend but hard to attack. If we were to take the crossing and kill ten thousand enemies, we would need to sacrifice thirteen thousand of our own soldiers. This battle is not worth it.”
“Yes, my lady.”
Though reluctant, Mulan could not defy Wind Spirit’s orders. She commanded all Wind Army troops to fall back and maintain a safe distance from the Tang army.
“Mulan, while bravery in battle is important, it is crucial to understand why you fight and who your enemy is.”
"I'm not sure I understand, my lord."
"Several of my royal brothers have declared war on the Tang Dynasty, forcing me to take over this mess. However, the Tang is not our true enemy. The Three Great Empires of Humanity and the Tripartite Balance are at play here. Now, two great empires are fighting while the Zhou watches from the sidelines."
"I have a vague feeling that ever since our father was suddenly gravely injured and then passed away, the Tang has been entangled with the demon race. Now we find ourselves inexplicably battling the Tang; all of this feels like part of a conspiracy."
Upon hearing this, Mulan was taken aback and exclaimed, "Princess, do you mean to say that this is all part of Zhou's scheme?"
"While there is no concrete evidence, it is likely true. Therefore, our most important task is to maintain the military strength of our Wind Nation," Wind Spirit pondered.
At that moment, Mulan understood everything and felt immense admiration for Wind Spirit. (To be continued...)
