Chapter 56: The Battle Against the Old Ghost King and Tao Tie
Lin Feng walked across the dark Desolate Star. He saw mortals trembling in fear, lost and despondent. Too many had already died, their blood staining the earth.
Some cultivators charged into the crowd of mortals, slaughtering those defenseless beings without mercy. Countless more fell to the ground, lifeless.
"Stop! What are you doing?" Lin Feng shouted in anger.
The mortals killed by the cultivators inexplicably rose again, moving like walking corpses across the land. They attacked anyone they encountered, biting and clawing.
Anyone who was injured by them, whether dead or alive, became just like them—mindless.
"What... is happening?" Lin Feng was stunned, frozen in place. How should he act?
"The moment you were unconscious for ten days, a thick cloud suddenly covered the sky," Wind Spirit explained. "Then, many powerful cultivators on the ground underwent a transformation; they began to kill indiscriminately, losing all rationality."
"Those who were killed by them became mindless as well. After twenty days, the number of dead has only increased. Now, we don't even know how many truly survive on Desolate Star."
"Have my senior brothers also become like this?" Lin Feng asked.
Wind Spirit nodded, wiping away tears from her eyes. "At the moment darkness descended, Big Senior Brother, Second Senior Brother, Third Senior Sister, Li Jing, and Fire Vein all turned into such beings. They attacked me, trying to kill us both. I couldn't bear to fight back against them, so I took you and fled. I opened a hole in the Void to heal and waited for you to wake up."
"Do you know who did this?" Lin Feng asked in a low voice, revealing a chilling intent to kill.
Wind Spirit shook her head. "I have no idea. Lin Feng, what should we do? Is there still hope for Big Senior Brother and the others?"
"First, we need to find them."
Lin Feng and Wind Spirit traversed Desolate Star in search of their senior brothers. Three days later, they found Dugu Po in Zhongzhou. Dugu Po's eyes were bloodshot; he attacked anyone he saw. The entire Zhongzhou had already fallen into chaos.
"Second Brother..."
Lin Feng let out a mournful cry as he rushed to Dugu Po's side. He embraced Dugu Po tightly, calling out in anguish, "Second Brother, it's me, Lin Feng. Please wake up."
Dugu Po stared blankly at Lin Feng. The moment Lin Feng loosened his grip, Dugu Po suddenly struck out, leaving several bloody marks on Lin Feng's body.
Within those bloodstains lay a strange power that attempted to invade Lin Feng's body. However, it was all burned away by Lin Feng from within.
"What on earth is this monstrous thing?" Lin Feng asked in confusion.
"I was once harmed by the Eldest Brother as well. But I couldn't help them burn away the strange power within them. That power has merged with their very lives," Wind Spirit replied.
"It seems we can only find the source of this problem."
Lin Feng looked at Dugu Po. The once refined man had now become a shadow of his former self, neither human nor ghost. Lin Feng felt an unbearable pain in his heart. He clenched his fists and roared in anger, "Who is behind this? I, Lin Feng, swear to tear you apart!"
In the end, Lin Feng bound Dugu Po and took him away. He then sought out the Eldest Brother and Third Senior Sister. Third Senior Sister had also arrived in Zhongzhou and was taken away by Lin Feng.
Two days later, Lin Feng found the Eldest Brother in Wind Nation Imperial City.
Seeing the Eldest Brother now with blood trickling from his mouth and in tattered clothes, tears streamed uncontrollably down Lin Feng's face as he choked out, "Eldest Brother, it's me, Lin Feng. I'm sorry I'm late."
The only response came from Master Da's sharp claws.
Lin Feng grasped Master Da's hands and bound him. Just as he intended to take him away, Master Da suddenly spoke: "Junior... Brother."
Hearing this, Lin Feng felt as if he were dreaming, overwhelmed with mixed emotions as he replied, "Eldest Brother. You're awake?"
Master Da wore a bitter smile. "I can only hold on for a moment."
"Senior Brother, what is going on?" Lin Feng asked.
"I can't tell for now. You should quickly find Tang Emperor. She seems to know everything," Master Da replied.
"What? Where is she?" Lin Feng inquired.
Master Da lost his composure and lunged at Lin Feng once more.
"I'm sorry, Senior Brother."
Lin Feng knocked Master Da unconscious with a punch and then took him away. Together with Wind Spirit, he began searching for Tang Jiner. The vast land made it difficult to find someone from the Legendary Realm.
Lin Feng spent ten full days traveling back and forth between Zhongzhou and Yang Prefecture countless times. Finally, he discovered Tang Jiner within a closed formation in the Great Zhou Imperial Palace.
Tang Jiner, Mo Mo, Cold Rain, Qi Wan'er, and a few others stood inside the formation. This formation was sustained by the aura of the Great Zhou Emperor. Outside the formation, a mountain of powerful cultivators clawed and attacked the formation desperately.
"It's over; the formation can't hold much longer," Cold Rain said gravely.
"Is this era really coming to an end? Before dying, I still can't see Lin Feng as I wished," Tang Jiner said sorrowfully.
"Princess, wait. I will do my best to escort you out," Mo Mo said.
Tang Jiner shook her head. "If the world is doomed, what does it matter if we survive? How long can we live anyway? We have held on until the end; there is no hope left."
"If we can't wait for Lin Feng to arrive, we might as well self-destruct our cultivation and perish together with this enemy," Qi Wan'er declared resolutely.
"Alright."
Tang Jiner and Mo Mo nodded.
Bang...
The formation of the Great Zhou Royal Family had held for several dozen days, but finally, it could no longer withstand the pressure and was destroyed in that moment.
"It’s time," Cold Rain said, preparing to unleash his cultivation.
"Wait, Lin Feng is here," Mo Mo suddenly spoke up.
Lin Feng appeared. He seemed like a deity, smashing a bloody path with a single punch, unstoppable as he made his way to the center of the formation. He stood protectively in front of Tang Jiner and the others.
"Get lost."
Lin Feng's roar echoed like thunder, spreading outwards from him like ripples in water. That one word carried divine might, overwhelming like a massive wave, directly annihilating countless cultivators and reducing them to ashes.
Tang Jiner and the others knew Lin Feng was powerful, someone who could ascend to the Imperial Realm of the starry sky. However, witnessing Lin Feng's terrifying strength firsthand left them all stunned and speechless.
Around them were countless cultivators at the Legendary Realm, with some even at the Sage Realm. Yet they were all wiped out by just a single word from Lin Feng?
But then something strange happened; all the fallen cultivators resurrected and charged at them once more.
"Let’s leave this place first," Wind Spirit suggested.
"Okay."
As Lin Feng led Tang Jiner and the others to escape, two formidable figures blocked their path. Lin Feng looked at them in shock and exclaimed, "Old Ghost King, Tao Tie, how are you back alive?"
Lin Feng forced a smile. After much effort to kill them both, they had now inexplicably returned to life. How was he supposed to fight this? What on earth was going on?
"Spirit, you take them and leave quickly. I’ll hold them off," Lin Feng said.
"Alright."
At this moment, the Wind Spirit decisively led Tang Jiner and the others away in haste.
Roar...
Tao Tie and Old Ghost King let out strange cries as they charged towards the Wind Spirit.
"Stop right there! I won't allow you to run wild here."
Lin Feng stepped in, intercepting Old Ghost King and Tao Tie. (To be continued...)
