Gu Sheng stared blankly at Ruyan's hairpin every day.
At night, he numbed himself with alcohol.
Zhou Cuiping watched from the side, her fists clenched tightly.
"Gu Sheng, do you still not forget Ruyan?"
Gu Sheng glanced at her but said nothing.
Zhou Cuiping ground her teeth in frustration, unable to vent her feelings. She could only endure. She was the heroine; she had to be magnanimous.
Half a year passed in the blink of an eye.
Zhou Cuiping still had not married into the General's residence. Every day, she pondered how to change her situation. After much thought, she decided to approach Lady Li.
So every morning, she would come to pay her respects.
Lady Li did not want to see her, so she waited under the sun. For three consecutive days, Lady Li did not summon her.
"I am the heroine; I must endure!" Zhou Cuiping constantly reminded herself.
Finally, Gu Sheng arrived.
"Sheng'er, why are you here?" Lady Li asked happily.
"Mother, please meet Cuiping first; she has been waiting for a long time," Gu Sheng sighed.
"Alright."
This time, Lady Li finally agreed.
After Zhou Cuiping entered, it was clear that Lady Li was no longer as resistant to her presence. The relationship between her and Gu Sheng also showed signs of improvement.
However, just a few days later, Gu Sheng began to treat her coldly again.
Zhou Cuiping could no longer bear it.
"Gu Sheng, what do you mean? Why are you being so hot and cold with me?"
"Cuiping, I'm sorry. It seems I've fallen for two people at the same time."
Gu Sheng looked tormented.
"What?"
Zhou Cuiping's eyes widened, her heart a mix of emotions.
As a Transmigrated Girl, she couldn't believe she was outdone by a beautiful and understanding woman who was already dead!
"Cuiping, give me some time. I will sort everything out," Gu Sheng promised.
What could Zhou Cuiping say? She could only nod in response.
The Su and the Meng complained, "My son is such a disappointment!"
Meng sighed, "Don't say that; my son Ke is just confused for a moment."
"It's been so long since Xiaoxiao went missing; who knows when she'll come back?" Su lamented.
"The master has sent someone to look for her. I believe Xiaoxiao will return," Meng said firmly.
Meanwhile, Su Xiawei was enjoying her days leisurely.
"Sister, what delicious food are we having today?"
Su Da Bao asked eagerly.
"Braised pork, sweet and sour ribs, Spicy Chicken Cubes..." Su Xiawei listed off a series of dishes.
"Sister, you're the best!" Su Da Bao exclaimed, hugging Su Xiawei and giving her a kiss on the cheek.
"Oh dear, it's all drool!" Su Xiawei teased playfully.
"Sister, I'm off to sell meat!" Su Da Bao said as she slung the meat over her shoulder and ran off.
Su Xiawei shook her head with a smile and continued cooking.
Su Xiaoxiao was teaching Xiao Maodou how to read.
Zhou Cuiping felt a heavy gloom every day. The servants in the mansion all knew she was not favored, and her treatment became increasingly neglectful. "I am the main character; I must endure!" she constantly reminded herself.
Finally, she awaited her moment of glory—she was pregnant.
Gu Sheng was both happy and conflicted. "Mother, what should I do?" he asked, his face twisted in pain.
"You useless thing, you can't even handle your own woman!" his mother, the Su, snapped angrily.
"Mother, please help me," Gu Sheng pleaded, grasping the Su's hand desperately.
"Enough. Go back for now; I need to think about what to do," the Su replied impatiently.
"Alright," Gu Sheng said as he left.
The Su summoned Zhou Cuiping. "From now on, you will be a concubine in the Gu Mansion."
"Miss Zhou, you either become Sheng'er’s concubine or you will be our Gu Mansion's concubine; there is no third option," the Su said coldly.
Zhou Cuiping had no chance to resist and was sent back to her small courtyard. Gu Sheng understood his mother's decision and did not voice any objections. He went to find Zhou Cuiping.
"Cuiping, I’m glad you’re carrying my child, but Ruyan lost her life for me; I cannot betray her," he said gently as he embraced her.
"I know, I understand, and I am willing to endure everything for you."
Zhou Cuiping remained just as gentle. She did not compromise. She still had a chance to turn things around. Zhou Cuiping had been contemplating how to make her comeback. Finally, the opportunity arrived. General Gu fell ill, and no medicine could cure him. Zhou Cuiping took out a miraculous herb from her space. General Gu was saved. The Su's attitude towards her began to change, even suggesting that she be recognized properly.
"Cuiping, why didn't you use those ginseng and spiritual mushrooms when Ruyan needed them?" Gu Sheng asked, his face filled with anger.
"I... I didn't think of it at the time," Zhou Cuiping defended herself.
"Did you forget, or did you choose to let her die?" Gu Sheng looked disappointed.
"I really didn't think of it," Zhou Cuiping continued to argue.
"Who are you trying to fool?" Gu Sheng was completely enraged. The two had a falling out. After giving birth to a daughter, Zhou Cuiping left. She firmly believed that her life should not be like this. She had a more brilliant future ahead of her. Gu Sheng felt nothing about Zhou Cuiping's departure. He had long seen through her; she was nothing but a malicious woman. A woman like that was not worth his longing.
The Su family arranged a marriage for Gu Sheng. The bride came from a family of martial generals, skilled with a whip, and her martial arts were on par with Gu Sheng's. After they married, they fought every day. However, the Su family did not concern themselves with this. She had completed her mission; the rest of the journey was for her son to navigate on his own.
After leaving the Gu Mansion, Zhou Cuiping intended to find a target in the capital. Unexpectedly, she was found by the Zhou family. Over the years, the Zhou family had faced bandits and their fortunes had declined. Now, they were living by doing hard labor. It was only when life became unbearable that Old Man Zhou brought the family to the capital to search for Zhou Cuiping.
Zhou Cuiping initially planned to escape, but the Zhou family kept a close watch on her, making it impossible to flee. So, she devised a plan to run away in the dead of night. However, before she could even make it out the door, the Zhou family discovered her attempt.
Old Man Zhou was ruthless. He bound her tightly and carried her back home. "Zhou Cuiping, you eat my food, drink my water, use my things, and still want to run?" he glared at her menacingly.
"Dad, I was wrong! I won't dare to run again; please spare me!" Zhou Cuiping began to plead for mercy. But how could Old Man Zhou let her off? "You wanted to escape, didn't you? Then I'll make sure you can't!" He picked up an axe and swung it down fiercely.
Zhou Cuiping let out a scream and fainted. She was sold off, bound by a death contract. She kept trying to escape but was continuously caught and brought back.
Then came a brutal beating. In the end, Zhou Cuiping had a leg broken and was sold off. Her life was truly tough. Zhou Cuiping didn’t even know how many times she had been sold. With her leg shattered, her space withered, and she couldn’t take anything out from it. All her support was gone. She could only become a beggar, waiting by the roadside for alms.
“Miss, could you move aside? I have no space here,” a nearby beggar began to shoo her away. Zhou Cuiping had no choice but to limp away.
“How did I end up like this?” Zhou Cuiping wondered, feeling increasingly frustrated. After all, she was a Transmigrated Girl, the main character! But why had she fallen to such depths? Zhou Cuiping couldn’t make sense of it.
Meanwhile, the Zhou Family returned to the village with their meager silver coins. They couldn’t afford to buy land and could only rent from others to farm. Life was extremely difficult.
“Eldest, Second, Third Son, Fourth Son… go buy me a few girls; otherwise, we can’t go on living like this,” Old Man Zhou commanded as he sat on the kang, directing his sons to go out.
“Father, we have no money left,” the Elder Zhou replied with a troubled expression.
“Take all the silver from home; the more, the better,” Old Man Zhou instructed.
“Alright!” The sons responded eagerly.
However, as soon as they stepped out, they were captured by the officials.
Human traffickers faced the death penalty upon capture. Old Man Zhou never expected that his attempt to steal chickens would lead to losing both his son and his men. Without his son, Old Man Zhou had no choice but to work the fields himself. But at his age, he was no longer able to do hard labor. Thus, he could only go to town to find odd jobs.
Life became increasingly difficult. Elder Zhou and his brothers turned into bullies in the village, and not a single girl was willing to marry them; they all remained bachelors. Su Xiaoxiao married the son of the martial arts alliance leader and lived a very happy life. Su Xiawei and Su Da Bao also settled down in the capital.
Xiao Maodou was very clever and became a Top Scholar, excelling in both civil and military affairs. He held Vice Minister Su in high regard and often visited him to play chess and fish together. Gu Sheng struggled in the court, feeling disheartened, spending his days drinking and reminiscing about Ruyan. He frequently quarreled with his wife, having small fights every three days and larger ones every five.
Su Xiawei and Su Xiaoxiao ventured through the martial world, living vibrant lives, though they were overwhelmed with too many children, leaving them busy from dawn till dusk. Zhou Cuiping froze to death on the streets during winter. In her final moments, she still thought about escaping, but she had no chance left. She died, and her space vanished.
"What a pity, such a good golden finger just disappeared like that," Su Xiawei scoffed.
"Sister Weiwei, let's go to the next world," Mu Xiaotuan appeared, pulling Su Xiawei away.
