Blooming in Adversity 6: Letter Storm

He was right; I was indeed a bit petty. I should have let today's incident slide, but I just couldn't help myself. They were pushing me too far, thinking I was dead. However, for the sake of the two elders, I wouldn't ruin Ma Hongkuan's career. There aren't many professions for soldiers. Destroying his career would be equivalent to ruining his life. Ma Hongkuan still had some conscience and wouldn't do anything too outrageous. 0

That night, he slept on the floor of the living room. The next morning, I woke up early, packed all my belongings, and planned to find a hotel. When I returned, Ma Hongkuan had already prepared breakfast. 0

" Fen, it's time to eat," he said. 0

Panpan and Niu Xinran were there too. When they saw me, their expressions immediately darkened. Panpan even moved her bowl to the other side of the table. Ma Hongkuan cleared his throat gently and said, "Panpan, that's Auntie's food; you should share a little with her." 0

Panpan huffed and didn't move. Niu Xinran lightly patted Panpan's back and looked at me defiantly. I ignored them and walked straight out the door. 0

I found the nearest hotel and booked the cheapest room—three days for twenty-one dollars. After buying breakfast and returning, I reached the door only to see my luggage had been opened. 0

My admission notice was torn down by Panpan and folded into a paper airplane. 0

I felt my expression change and quickly strode over to snatch the notice back. Panpan was startled by me and burst into tears. 0

Niu Xinran heard the crying and rushed out. “ Fen, what are you doing!” 0

I ignored her and carefully placed the notice back in its original position. Niu Xinran rushed over and pushed me aside, saying, “ Fen, how dare you scare Panpan!” 0

I gritted my teeth. “That’s my admission notice. Why do you think you can touch my things?” 0

Panpan sat on the ground, crying loudly. Niu Xinran comforted her gently, “Panpan, don’t be afraid, Mommy is here.” 0

She turned to me and said, “It’s just a piece of paper, right? Is it really that important?” 0

“It is!” I shouted. “That’s my life!” 0

Niu Xinran scoffed, “Your life?” 0

“ Fen, have you forgotten? Your life has already been ruined.” 0

“Does it matter if you get married or go to school?” 0

I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down. “ Niu Xinran, you don’t need to provoke me.” 0

“Trying to bait me won’t work,” I added. 0

Niu Xinran chuckled lightly, “ Fen, you’re just a pitiful creature.” 0

“I’ll be waiting for you to come back and beg me.” 0

She carried Panpan away. 0

I returned to my room, tidied up my things, and planned to leave a letter for Ma Hongkuan. I wanted to tell him that I had gone back to Annulment and that I had been accepted into another university. From now on, we would part ways. 0

As I took out the stationery and began to write the title, there was a knock on the door. 0

Ma Hongkuan's voice came from outside, " Fen, are you in there?" His tone was urgent, as if he had been running around. 0

When he saw me, he sighed in relief. "I'm glad you're okay." 0

" Fen, come back with me." 0

I frowned. "How did you find this place?" 0

Ma Hongkuan sighed again. "You disappeared, and I searched everywhere for you. When I couldn't find you, I thought I'd try here." 0

He stepped into the room and started to help me pack my things. I cautiously hid the partially written letter. 0

Ma Hongkuan's attention was drawn to my bag. He opened it curiously, and a silver bracelet fell out. 0

His expression changed dramatically as he sternly asked, " Fen, how do you have this?" 0

I was confused. "What's wrong?" 0

"This is my engagement token from when I was a child! How could it be with you?" 0

Ma Hongkuan's eyes widened in anger, as if I had committed some unforgivable crime. 0
