Lin Kedu stood in the same spot where she first met Bei Heng, silent and unmoving. She had been summoned here since early morning, and several incense sticks had burned down by now, while the Third Emperor stared at her without uttering a word.
It was only after a Heavenly Slave approached to replace the cooling teacup beside him that he finally spoke, “Where is Yuling?”
She hesitated for a moment, her response cryptic, “She goes back to where she came from.”
With a crash, the jade cup fell to the ground as Bei Heng's anger flared. “Five hundred years ago, Yuling was harmed by you, and five hundred years later, you still won’t let her go?”
Lin Kedu froze, looking at him in surprise. Her calm demeanor began to ripple, her eyes filled with astonishment and confusion.
“I told you, discovering the truth is not difficult.”
After Bei Heng finished speaking, he silently recited an incantation. The Bronze Mirror that had been resting on the table slowly floated into the air, its surface glowing brightly. Three characters could be faintly seen along the edge: Half-Life Mirror.
With a sweep of his long sleeve, Bei Heng's voice turned cold. “It can reveal past life memories. Lin Kedu, take your time to relive them.”
Lin Kedu clasped her hands together tightly, her fingers entwined betraying her tension. The mirror's image shifted, revealing the Crimson Sun Kingdom from five hundred years ago.
In the mirror lay a man draped in a dragon robe, reclining on a couch with an imposing presence that radiated authority even in his slumber.
Soon after, an Apricot Robe Woman entered, elegantly approaching the man. She leaned down and secretly kissed his cheek, her eyes revealing unmasked affection as her movements were gentle.
Bei Heng had stepped closer to her side while Lin Kedu's gaze remained fixed on the Apricot Robe Woman in the mirror. The shy look in her eyes was that of a young woman experiencing love for the first time.
As Bei Heng waved his sleeve again, the scenes changed frequently—within courtyards, gardens, and grand halls…
The man either admired the flowers or reviewed the memorials, but what remained unchanged was the gentle presence of the Apricot Robe Woman, soft enough to overflow with water, while he maintained his aloof and arrogant demeanor.
Lin Kedu quickly turned away, unwilling to continue watching. The swift motion of her turn was a reminder that the reality of the past was today's pain.
Bei Heng would not let her escape. He turned her body towards him and whispered, "What comes next is more exciting than what you told me."
The scene in the mirror shifted to the inner palace, where the man was styling the hair of another Red-Clad Woman with gentle hands, obsessively saying, "Yuling, in this life, I love only you."
Outside, the Apricot Robe Woman suddenly halted, leaning heavily against the outer wall. The weight of her phoenix crown made it hard for her to breathe. A maid beside her quietly asked, "Your Majesty, are you alright?"
"Don't!"
Lin Kedu stumbled back, as the shattered image in the mirror revealed the lies she had woven that day in the Tea House: wanting to be his beloved Yuling, she had pretended to be Yuling herself.
Now, faced with the truth, she felt as if she were naked before him.
Including her ridiculous dignity.
"My Empress, weren't you always audacious? Would you like me to remind you how Yuling died?"
His tone was laced with laughter yet chillingly frightening; his lips curled slightly upward while his gaze remained icy.
Trying to recall certain images, Lin Kedu covered her face and shouted, "No."
The images were obscured, but his voice seemed to penetrate her eardrums word by word: a weak woman like you sent to the military camp was nothing but a lamb entering a tiger's den. Did you not hear her desperate cries for help while sitting on your throne?
"It wasn't like that. I only wanted to send her away for a brief respite for the Crimson Sun Kingdom."
Little did I know that the next day, her ravaged corpse would be delivered to me.
"Lin Kedu, you're lying." Bei Heng pressed closer, his heavy footsteps forcing her against the wall.
In the ancient mirror, there was the scene of Yuling being forcibly coerced and sent into a carriage.
To use every dirty trick just because of love would never be forgiven.
"Where is Yuling now?" Why couldn't he discern her whereabouts despite observing the heavens?
For a long time, Lin Kedu remained silent, head bowed, before bursting into laughter. "Indeed, I hate that she could effortlessly win your heart. I never expected that you could still recognize her at a glance. Third Emperor, how could I possibly keep her?"
With a thud, Bei Heng swung his sleeve, and she collided with the nearby pillar.
In his fury, he held nothing back. The Third Emperor, who knew all the truths, would only love the enchanting Yuling even more and despise her venomous heart even deeper.
But perhaps this was for the best.
He wouldn't remember her because of love; instead, he would be unable to forget her because of hatred.
