Hong Yu inadvertently played a role in helping to break the ice between Yun Qingyu and Xin Yao.
Previously, Yun Lingchuan had asked Yun Qingyu if he liked the shadow guard Xin Yao, and now Hong Yu was asking Xin Yao if he had developed feelings for His Highness.
Xin Yao's mind was consumed by Hong Yu's words, leaving him momentarily blank.
Yun Qingyu watched Hong Yu's rapidly departing figure, his brows furrowing in thought. This guy sure runs fast.
Turning to Xin Yao, he intended to ask if he was full, but before he could speak, he saw Xin Yao kneeling on the ground.
"What are you doing?"
"Subordinate is doomed."
Xin Yao had been pondering Hong Yu's words for quite some time and finally came to understand his own feelings. It turned out that what he felt for his master was indeed love. He loved being by his master's side at all times, enjoyed sharing meals with him, relished listening to his voice—even if it was just giving orders—and cherished the moments spent chatting casually while pressing his master's head.
He loved playing chess with his master, even if he got his hands slapped for being too slow; it still brought him happiness.
He cherished every night spent sharing a bed with his master, inhaling the familiar scent as he drifted off to sleep.
Yun Qingyu quietly listened to Xin Yao's heartfelt confession without the expected anger; instead, his eyes brightened.
"Why? Damn it, did Hong Yu hit the nail on the head? Do you really like This Palace?"
Xin Yao blushed, lowering his head even further, his body tense as he muttered, "I should be damned. I gathered my courage and admitted that I like my master. But Hong Yu is right; this is a grave offense, and according to the rules, I should be subjected to the harshest punishments. For forty-nine days, until my last breath."
Yun Qingyu raised an eyebrow slightly and asked, "Who set these rules? Just because someone likes another person, they must endure such torment?"
She spoke slowly, "Although Hong Yu has a point, as a Shadow Guard—especially the leader of the Shadow Guards managing the Hidden Pavilion—I should remain emotionless at all times. However, with my noble status, beauty, strength, and extraordinary demeanor, it is only natural for you to develop feelings for me while we are together day in and day out. I can be lenient with you and allow you to like me."
Xin Yao suddenly looked up into Yun Qingyu's calm yet smiling eyes, his heart racing with surprise: She doesn't intend to punish me.
Yun Qingyu tapped the table lightly, her demeanor relaxed as she said, "Get up and eat. Don't mind what Hong Yu said. Didn't I tell you before? As long as it's something I permit, you can do it."
Xin Yao stood up and sat down at the table. Yun Qingyu added, "If you truly like me, then like me well. You must not waver easily or develop feelings for other women."
Xin Yao stood up abruptly and replied earnestly, "I won't like any other woman."
"I'm full," he said. It seemed Yun Qingyu wanted to say more.
But there didn't seem to be much left to say; she was not a woman who immersed herself in romantic feelings. The fact that Xin Yao liked her seemed only natural.
He was her Shadow Guard; being obedient to her, loyal to her, and then developing feelings for her was a logical progression.
Though Shadow Guards were not supposed to have emotions, having feelings might not necessarily be a bad thing. After all, once Xin Yao liked her, he would become even more devoted and obedient without distractions, willingly breaking free from the constraints of the rules. That feeling should be quite nice.
Seeing that Xin Yao was likely not in the mood to eat anymore, Yun Qingyu smiled and stood up. "If you're full, let's go to the military camp."
Xin Yao responded happily, his figure closely following behind, his heart growing softer with each step.
"Master allows me to like him, allows me to be by his side, but what if Master gets married? Once there’s a Consort, will Master think my existence is unnecessary and cast me aside?"
Yun Qingyu, hearing Xin Yao's murmurs of unease, stopped in her tracks. She turned to look at him, gently cupping his face in her hands and stroking it softly. "This Palace will not have a Consort. I promise to keep you by my side, so you need not overthink."
Xin Yao was taken aback by her words, pondering: Does Master know what I'm thinking?
Yun Qingyu slightly turned away, her expression unchanged as she spoke without hesitation. "Your emotions are written all over your face; it’s not difficult for This Palace to guess. You don’t need to worry about what others say."
"If This Palace says I want you, then I will always want you. If This Palace says it’s against the rules, then it is against the rules; what others say doesn’t matter."
These words completely calmed Xin Yao's heart. He looked at Yun Qingyu with gentle eyes and slowly nodded, saying, "What others say doesn’t matter. Xin Yao only listens to Master."
In that moment, Yun Qingyu felt quite pleased as she gazed at Xin Yao's obedient demeanor. Suddenly, she reached out and gently patted his head, softly saying, "Good boy."
Then she turned and left the residence. Xin Yao's heart raced a little faster; he stood alone for a moment, suppressing his excitement before quickly following after her.
