As I spoke, frustrated, I threw the cushions from the sofa at him. What a joke! This house was something we had worked so hard to buy. Now they thought they could just claim it with a few words?
Li Jingzhang covered his shoulder where I had hit him and continued, "It's not about the house; it's about borrowing money. My dad has already given my brother 100,000 yuan, and now they want to borrow another 100,000 from us."
I was almost laughing in anger at their shamelessness and favoritism. I flatly refused them, firmly telling him that I would not lend them any money. Because once it was lent out, it would never come back, just like his and Father-in-law's biased behavior. In the end, they would only tell me that we were all family and shouldn't hold grudges.
After saying that, I returned to my room, locked the door, and hid all the bankbooks, cards, and valuables in the house. Outside, I could hear Li Jingzhang and his father whispering. I didn’t know what they were saying and didn’t want to listen; I simply buried my head under the covers and went to sleep.
The next day, I got up early and took Xuanxuan to register for school. Everything should have gone smoothly. However, when the registrar heard the address I provided, they frowned.
"I'm sorry, but the slots are already full," the registrar said.
I was taken aback. Full? How could that be?
"Excuse me, did you make a mistake? We haven't used our slot; how can it be full?" I hurriedly replied.
"No mistake; the slots are indeed full," the registrar said as they pulled out a list and pointed to a name on it.
"Look here, it's Li Jing, not the name you want to register."
I was stunned.
The name on the document was indeed Li Jin's father. But who was Li Jing? That wasn't Xuanxuan's name.
"Comrade, is there a mistake? I registered my son's name, not Li Jing," I said urgently.
"There’s no mistake. The property deed has Li Jin's name on it, so the quota belongs to Li Jing, who is Li Jin's daughter," the registrar replied indifferently.
I felt as if I had been struck by lightning. The property deed had Li Jin's name? How could that be? It was clearly my name on the deed.
"Comrade, are you sure there's no mistake? My name is clearly on the property deed," I said, my voice trembling.
"There’s no mistake. The property deed has Li Jin's name on it. If you don’t believe me, you can go back and check," the registrar said before calling out the next name.
Dazed, I took Xuanxuan home and dug out the property deed to take a look. There it was, boldly written: Li Jin and Wang Qin. My heart felt like it was being gripped tightly by an invisible hand, painful enough to make it hard to breathe.
I recalled the years spent with Li Jingzhang, remembering those nights working overtime just to provide a better future for this family. I still vividly remembered the mix of anxiety and excitement when I decided to use my dowry and savings for the down payment on the house. I remembered how I cared for my father-in-law when he fell ill, and how those sacrifices were taken for granted by the Li family.
And now, all of that had turned to dust. The names on the property deed felt like a resounding slap in the face, shattering all my illusions. My hands trembled as anger and disappointment intertwined within me, nearly tearing me apart.
I closed my eyes, trying to calm myself down.
I turned and walked toward the study, where all the documents related to the house were stored. I quickly and eagerly flipped through each piece of paper, not letting a single word escape my attention.
