I furrowed my brows, formulating a plan. I turned to Hu Fang and said, "I'll pull Qiangzi away; you take the chance to save your brother." After saying that, I exchanged a glance with Li Zhisheng, signaling him to help. Li Zhisheng understood and walked over to Qiangzi's side with me. Qiangzi looked at me and said, "What do you want? You're mistaken!" I smiled and replied, "I'm not mistaken; I'm here to catch you." With that, I lunged at Qiangzi, grabbing his hands and whispering in his ear, "Run!"
Qiangzi was taken aback for a moment but quickly released his grip on Tang Qian. He then sprang up, lifting me along with him. Although I knew Qiangzi wasn't very strong, I was still shocked by his sudden movement. But there was no time to think; I grabbed Li Zhisheng and turned to run, with Qiangzi following closely behind. Hu Fang and Tang Qian were caught off guard by our sudden reaction, and just as they tried to pursue us, we darted into a nearby classroom in the teaching building, disappearing from their sight.
Since we couldn't escape right away, we had no choice but to hide in a classroom on the first floor of the building for the time being. As soon as we entered, we heard Hu Fang calling out from outside, "Shen Xu! Where are you? Why did you leave me behind?" Hearing his voice, I quickly motioned for Qiangzi and Li Zhisheng to lower their bodies while I crouched close to the wall.
After a while, as Hu Fang's voice faded into the distance, Li Zhisheng whispered to me, "Could they be ghosts?" I lowered my voice and replied softly, "I'll explain later." Then I continued to crouch down and stealthily moved to the door to gently close it. Returning to them, I asked Li Zhisheng, "Weren't you guys just playing a round of the Four Corners Game downstairs?"
Li Zhisheng nodded thoughtfully. I continued, "If that's the case, then when I played a round and returned to the starting point, I was no longer there. After that, I must have entered what you call the Underworld Gate. It seems like the game is still ongoing there, and only one person has disappeared. That means at least three of us are ghosts besides me in that layer. Hu Fang's words inadvertently reminded me that the girl we first saw might really have wanted to help me. So it's reasonable to deduce that there are two other uncertain ghosts."
Li Zhisheng interjected, "So you're saying it's possible that Hu Fang and Tang Qian are possessed by those two ghosts?" I patted Li Zhisheng on the shoulder and said, "You're smart." Li Zhisheng didn't respond; it seemed he didn't even notice my gesture.
After a moment, Li Zhisheng continued asking, "But how can you be sure that Hu Fang and Tang Qian are definitely ghosts?" I chuckled smugly and replied, "You know a lot about strange arts and techniques, but you're not as sharp in these areas as I am. Remember when we had that argument behind another teaching building? Hu Fang was quietly hiding behind us without us knowing what he was doing. And why did Tang Qian make that phone call? Wasn't he always so negative? Plus, Hu Fang's excitement when he received the call—didn't you notice anything unusual?"
Li Zhisheng interrupted me again: "And what about Tang Qian? How do you determine he's involved? Just because of one phone call?" I scoffed dismissively: "Could it be Qiangzi? You can't even trust your own buddy..." My words trailed off abruptly.
Since we entered the classroom, Qiangzi had been silent, which made me uneasy. It seemed Li Zhisheng sensed something too; he quickly took over my words: "Qiangzi is my good buddy; how could I not trust him? I'll go check if they've left; staying here isn't a solution." With that, he stood up and headed toward the door.
Seeing him trying to find an opportunity to escape first made me rush after him: "I'll go take a look too." Together with Li Zhisheng, we cautiously approached the door. Just then, I felt a strong hand grab my shoulder. Fear coursed through me as I heard Qiangzi's voice from behind: "Where are you two going?! Hehe~" Li Zhisheng trembled slightly at the sound.
I dared not turn around and feigned calmness: "Nowhere; we're just taking a look." After hearing this, Li Zhisheng slowly opened the door without looking back and pulled me along as he jumped outside.
In that instant when we leaped out, I grabbed the doorknob instinctively. The classroom door slammed shut with a loud bang behind us, followed by eerie cries from inside. I silently thanked my luck but suddenly remembered: "If there are two Evil Spirits and we've confirmed that Qiangzi is one of them... then who is the other? Hu Fang or Tang Qian?" The thought sent a wave of panic through me.
Just as I was thinking, Li Zhisheng pulled me up from the ground and said, "There's no other way now. If we want to escape, we might really need that girl's help. From now on, we'll split up. You go find her for assistance, and I'll go save Tang Qian!" It was as if Li Zhisheng had already planned everything out, giving me orders before running off on his own.
I didn't dare to hesitate any longer. My arrogance had already led things to the worst possible outcome. If anyone died because of me, I could only atone with my life. Just then, I suddenly heard Qiangzi banging on the door, jolting me back to reality. There was no doubt that the door would be broken down soon. When that happened, it would truly be too late to turn back. Without further ado, I sprinted towards another classroom building.
In less than five minutes, I reached the classroom where we had played the Four Corners Game earlier. Since I needed to see that girl again, I thought I should first find the Peach Wood Doll and give it a try. Holding my phone like a headless fly, I anxiously searched the classroom but found nothing. Just when I was at my wit's end, the light from my phone swept across a corner of the wall, and there she was, standing there as if waiting for me to return.
I couldn't afford to ponder why I could see her again; I hurried over and explained my intentions. She merely smiled slightly and said, "You don't need to say much; I already know everything. It was I who brought you here. Your companions have all been possessed without exception."
I was taken aback and muttered to myself, "Even Li Zhisheng in such a short time...?!" Ignoring my shock, she continued, "You understand what kind of place this is without me having to explain further. If you want to save your companions, you must awaken the Void Spirit within you and use the Huo to close the Underworld Gate. Otherwise, not only will you fail to save your friends, but this city will also become the second Fengmen Village."
Upon hearing Fengmen Village, I was surprised that this matter was related to that infamous village. When she mentioned the Hao Yin on me, I asked, "How do I use the Hao Yin to close the Underworld Gate?" She lowered her head and replied, "It's not Hao Yin; it's Huo. Huo is Huo; Yin is Yin." Confused, I anxiously asked, "Stop speaking in riddles! Saving people is urgent now. Just tell me directly what to do." She slowly raised her head; her eyes were sewn shut with thread, and her nose had been cut off. Although I knew she meant no harm, seeing her like this made me instinctively take a step back.
She pointed outside towards the playground and said, "Sprinkle the blood of your Huo in the center of this school quickly—if you're late, it will be too late." After saying this, she took two steps back and vanished into the wall.
Her words left me baffled, but for the sake of saving others, I could only treat it as a last-ditch effort. I hurriedly ran down the stairs in threes and twos while contemplating how much blood would be appropriate when suddenly a fierce wind howled around me. Ghosts poured out of the buildings like a tide, forming two massive black waterfalls. At that moment, Li Zhisheng, Hu Fang, Qiangzi, and Tang Qian all appeared before me at once. With the light from my phone illuminating their faces, I saw their features twisted and grotesque with a heavy Killing Intent in their eyes.
I thought it was all over now; before I could react, Qiangzi lunged at me with great force. A gust of wind swept over me as he collided with me and sent me flying two meters away. As I hit the ground, a sweet taste filled my throat as blood surged from my mouth onto the ground. I thought to myself: "This should be enough now?" But before I could catch my breath, Li Zhisheng and Tang Qian charged at me as well.
I struggled to get up and dodge them but felt like my body had fallen apart from Qiangzi's impact; I couldn't rise at all. Instead, I rolled aside just in time to avoid Tang Qian and Li Zhisheng's charge. Seeing they missed their target only fueled their anger further. They turned around and took two big strides toward me. Then Li Zhisheng raised his hand and grabbed me by my throat before throwing me high into the air.
I prepared myself for death as I fell but caught a glimpse of Hu Fang below where I was headed. She grinned wickedly and raised her finger like a sharp spike aimed at my chest.
In that instant of falling downwards, my eyes widened as I watched Hu Fang's arm pierce through my chest; I wanted to scream but couldn't make a sound at all. Once Hu Fang saw she had succeeded in her attack, she withdrew her arm from my chest. With a heavy thud, I crashed onto the ground.
Blood gushed from my chest like a fountain, and my vision gradually became blurry. Yet, I felt no pain at all; instead, I felt an overwhelming warmth, as if I were lying under a cozy blanket in winter.
Around me, the frantic shouts of Li Zhisheng and Hu Fang echoed. "Yes, no one can stop you now. Perhaps, just as that girl said, a second Fengmen Village is about to emerge." With this thought, even though I felt a sense of unwillingness, there was nothing I could do.
Slowly, the surroundings grew brighter, and a blinding light enveloped me. This light brought a sense of peace and tranquility, and it seemed familiar somehow. "Is this the light of returning life?" I chuckled self-deprecatingly before slowly closing my eyes.
