At that moment, all my previous assumptions were nearly overturned. I stood there, staring at the three corpses in front of me, feeling numb. "Liu Zhong asked me to escort the transport because he was worried about an insider. Now it seems almost certain that the insider is Meng Zhuang. The time I disappeared at the hotel was likely when he switched the two vehicles. Isn't this the swapped vehicle right in front of me? But why are there three corpses inside? Who are these three people?!"
Suddenly, two urgent honks from a car pulled me back from my thoughts. I quickly turned around to see the vehicle that had approached from behind stopping just behind me, seemingly checking if we needed help.
Worried that the driver might see the bodies in the trunk, I hurriedly snatched the door lock and keys from Meng Zhuang, who was sitting on the ground, and locked the trunk door tightly again.
Then I turned around and pulled Meng Zhuang up. He was still in shock, and I could feel his body trembling violently as I held his hand. I thought it would be useless to question him now; for the moment, I needed to find a way to leave and make plans because my intuition told me that the person in white I had seen just before the crash was likely nearby, watching our every move.
I patted Meng Zhuang to help him regain his composure and walked toward the car parked behind us. Just as I reached the driver's side, a man leaned out of the lowered window and asked, "What happened? Do you need help?"
I sized him up; he looked to be in his early thirties. "We had an accident, and we lost our phone. We're stuck here with no place to go," I replied, glancing back at Meng Zhuang still standing there.
The man in the car examined me for a moment before suggesting, "How about I call the police for you?" Initially, I thought he would take us to the nearest city for shelter, but hearing this made me worry that we wouldn't be able to explain everything clearly when the police arrived. So I said, "Look, I'm injured and my friend is in shock. How about this: I'll give you some money if you can take us to the nearest city so we can treat our wounds? We'll handle calling the police ourselves."
He glanced at Meng Zhuang standing in front of the car and pondered for a moment. "Alright then, since we're not far from Shijiazhuang, how about I take you directly to a hospital there?"
I nodded in agreement and reached out to pull Meng Zhuang along with me. However, as soon as I turned him around under the car's headlights, I saw his vacant eyes and pale face. A chill ran down my spine—could it be that what I saw earlier wasn't a person but a ghost? Was Meng Zhuang possessed by a spirit?!
Thinking this, I instinctively took a few steps back. But then I noticed that Meng Zhuang was merely trembling; it seemed he was truly just overwhelmed with fear. I stepped forward again and patted him gently. "Hey—hey—Da Zhuang, what's wrong?" But he remained unresponsive, staring blankly ahead.
Frowning, I turned to look in the direction he was gazing at and felt a shiver run through me. Not far behind our car stood that figure in white, illuminated eerily by the red taillights.
Fearing further complications, I quickly pulled Meng Zhuang into the stranger's car. Trying to maintain my composure so that the man wouldn't notice anything unusual, I said firmly, "Alright, let's go!" As soon as I finished speaking, the car started moving.
On the road, the driver asked, "Where are you headed? What happened to you? Were you drinking and driving?" Hearing his question, I thought to myself, "I can't possibly tell you we saw a ghost and ended up like this to avoid it." So, I made up an excuse: "We're just running some errands. It's all the navigation's fault for not directing us properly. We're not familiar with this place, and one careless moment led to the crash."
Then I turned the question back to the driver, "Where are you going? This road is so remote; aren't you worried about safety driving alone?" He sighed, "I don't want to be out here either. My friend just got married, and he insisted I drive a few drunk friends home. I had no choice. Plus, taking this route saves on tolls." He chuckled at that.
It seemed Meng Zhuang was right; this road indeed bypassed the toll station. I nodded in agreement, "Ah, the wedding customs are meant to be festive, but they really do put everyone through trouble." The driver sighed again at my words, "Who isn't?"
After that, I stopped talking to the driver. I glanced at Meng Zhuang sitting beside me and patted him gently, asking softly, "What's wrong? Are you still shaken up?" He rubbed his trembling hands together and stammered, "I... I can't help it. Who told me to... to be so scared?"
I was puzzled and asked, "You know you're scared yet you kept telling me ghost stories? Isn't that just asking for trouble?" He gave me a wry smile but didn't say anything more.
The ride continued in silence. After more than an hour, the car stopped in front of a large hospital in Shijiazhuang. I got out and pressed two hundred yuan into the driver's hand; he hesitated for a moment before accepting it.
Standing at the hospital entrance, I thought to myself, "I don't have any real injuries; coming here is just an excuse. First, I want to leave quickly because if we call the police now, things could get complicated. Second, because of that person in white, I'm very clear now that due to the suppression of my mark and Void Spirit being in a dormant state, it's nearly impossible for me to see ghosts. So it must have been a person; as for their intentions, I'm still in the dark. All I can do is leave as soon as possible."
With that thought in mind, I looked over at Meng Zhuang. He had regained some color; his face wasn't as pale anymore. At this point, I didn't want to keep pretending with him any longer. I asked directly, "What are your plans now? I'm sure you're too scared to call the police as well. So who made you do this?"
However, Meng Zhuang seemed intent on maintaining his act and deflected my question: "Shen, I'm just new at the company; I don't know anything! Look at me—I’m terrified! What could I possibly hide from you? I initially wanted to use this opportunity to impress everyone; who knew this would happen? Now my job is probably at stake."
I scoffed and pulled out the booklet I'd found in the car earlier, waving it in front of him: "How about this? Does it look familiar? Are you still not going to tell me the truth?!"
