"Don't play dumb with me!" I snapped. "You know where the gold and bodies are; if you don't cooperate now, even divine intervention won't save you!" With that, I signaled Li Zhisheng to pull out my phone from my pocket and show him the video I had just recorded.
Li Zhisheng understood and took my phone out, placing it in front of Liu Zhong. "You like playing tricks? Let’s show you what real ghosts look like!" As my words fell, Li Zhisheng pressed play.
Time ticked by as the video displayed those three invisible 'people.' Liu Zhong's eyes were glued to the screen as if his eyeballs might pop out; beads of sweat rolled down his cheeks.
Just as Liu Zhong on screen pulled out a knife, the video abruptly stopped. Li Zhisheng put the phone away and returned it to my pocket. "Have you thought it over now?!" I asked.
"I... if I tell you everything, can you save me?" Seeing a hint of fear in Liu Zhong's tone made me hurry to respond: "If you tell me everything, maybe I'll save you; but if not, then I definitely won't save you. The choice is yours."
"The gold is in the basement of this building; the bodies are..." Liu Zhong started but suddenly stopped midway. Just as I was about to press him further, he transformed into someone else entirely—grinning grotesquely and emitting a voice that didn't belong to him at all: "Save him? Does he deserve your help?!"
At the moment Liu Zhong let out that strange sound, his strength suddenly surged. With a powerful swing of his arm, he threw both me and Li Zhisheng aside.
As soon as he tossed us away, Liu Zhong hurriedly rolled to his feet, yanked open the door, and fled outside. I wanted to get up and chase after him, but the blow to my head had left me seeing stars, and I couldn't keep up. Li Zhisheng, rubbing his head, said, "This is going to be a big problem!"
"It's already a big problem; it's just going to be harder to handle now..." I said as I dialed the police. Before long, the officers arrived at the company. I handed over all the evidence I had and followed them to the station to give a detailed statement. As I was leaving, I repeatedly urged them to find Liu Zhong as quickly as possible.
To my surprise, just as I was about to leave the police station, a young officer rushed past us with a panicked expression. Moments later, we overheard him telling his superior, "We just received a report of a madman who brutally murdered his wife and children..."
Upon hearing this, I thought to myself, "This so-called madman must be Liu Zhong. It seems those three ghosts are taking revenge on him by possessing him and forcing him to kill his own family to relieve their hatred." Li Zhisheng also realized that the person might be Liu Zhong and said, "The only way to stop Liu Zhong now is one..."
He glanced at me, and I suddenly remembered the book that could dispel ghosts. With that thought in mind, we hurriedly left the police station and rushed home.
As soon as we arrived home, I heard Hu Fang's voice from the living room watching TV. "Breaking news: A major murder case occurred in our city today. The perpetrator was extremely ruthless and continued to resist fiercely even after being captured, resulting in two police officers being seriously injured. The responding officers immediately opened fire and shot the suspect dead on the spot..."
Hu Fang looked at me and Li Zhisheng in confusion and asked, "What happened? Is everything okay?" She waved her hand in front of my face; when she saw we were unresponsive, she added, "Could this have something to do with you two?"
I nodded slightly. "Li Zhisheng, you explain it to her. I'm a bit tired and want to rest first..." Li Zhisheng seemed like he wanted to comfort me but held back his words; he simply patted my shoulder gently.
Once inside my room, I collapsed onto the bed. "Though this man deserves death a thousand times over, there were once shared hardships between us," I sighed. With that thought in mind, I lit a cigarette and lay back on the bed.
Watching the curling smoke drift away brought mixed emotions; I didn't know whether to feel happy or sad.
After a moment, I sat up and stubbed out my cigarette on the floor with my shoe before tossing it into the trash can. Then I turned around and fell asleep.
In the following days, the police visited me several times. After extensive investigations, they managed to locate the three bodies and subsequently uncovered three illegal Usury Companies linked to those deceased individuals, shutting them down in one fell swoop.
Following Liu Zhong's instructions, I indeed found half a ton of gold in the basement that had gone missing. After selling all of it off, I barely managed to pay back the bank loan.
As for Meng Zhuang, feeling sorry for him, I rehired him at the company and assigned him a decent position. After several months of restructuring, the company finally got back on track; I then handed it over to several long-time associates who had been with me from the start while I only occasionally checked in.
During this time, Hu Fang was busy with her writing projects while Li Zhisheng had some matters to attend to and was away for over two months before returning.
This morning, I sat alone in front of my computer anxiously watching as more marks appeared on my hands. Talking to myself, I said, "Wasn't Death Apostle supposed to help find Onizuka? Why haven't there been any updates? Did they forget? At this rate, am I going to have to play Supernatural Game again?!"
Just then, Li Zhisheng emerged from his room after hearing my words. He replied, "Not necessarily; if it comes down to it, we could visit some haunted places since I've finished my work too. Hu Fang has submitted her manuscript; we might as well treat it like a vacation."
Hearing Li Zhisheng's suggestion, I also thought it was a good idea and said, "It sounds feasible, but I don't know where to go. Do you have any good ideas?"
He pondered for a moment and replied, "Hmm... I heard there are quite a few haunted places in Guizhou. How about we check that out?" Before Li Zhisheng could finish his sentence, the door was suddenly flung open.
Hu Fang stumbled in, carrying two large bags. "Can someone come help me with this?" she called out. Li Zhisheng hurried over to assist her. As he took one of the bags, he exclaimed, "Why did you buy so much food? Are you preparing for an escape?"
"Escape? What are you talking about? I just noticed there wasn't much food at home, so I went to buy some. If you two big men weren't just lounging around at home all the time, would I need to do this?" Hu Fang replied, her face showing a hint of grievance.
Hearing her words, I quickly asked, "Aren't we the ones staying home? Just earlier, Li Zhisheng and I were discussing where to travel. Do you have any good suggestions?"
As soon as Hu Fang heard about traveling, her spirits lifted. "Great! I also want to travel. What kind of place are you thinking of going to?"
I grinned and said, "Somewhere with lots of ghosts..."
