"It seems I underestimated you; you have some skills," said a former member of the Death Apostle, who suddenly sprang up from the ground like a carp. Blood poured from his severed arms, but he appeared completely unconcerned.
"Bring her over!" he shouted to those behind him. As he called out, two staff members in uniforms escorted a person toward us from a distance.
The person being held in the middle had long hair that fell over her face. Judging by her physique, she seemed to be a woman. She struggled continuously, trying to break free from her captors, but no matter how hard she fought, she couldn't escape their grasp.
Seeing this, a thought flashed through my mind: "Could this be Hu Fang?!"
Beside me, the Death Apostle furrowed his brow and muttered, "This can't be..."
At that moment, the two staff members had brought the woman closer. One of them grabbed her hair and yanked it back.
"Ah!" she cried out in surprise, revealing a delicate face. "Hu Fang!" I felt a chill run down my spine and quickly warned the Void Spirit within me, "Don't harm that woman!"
The Void Spirit scoffed, "Since when do you give me orders?" It began to gather power, channeling most of its strength into Jiang Ling and activating the You Long on the hilt of the sword.
The former member of the Death Apostle seemed intimidated by my sudden surge of power. He panicked and said, "Don't act rashly! Your friend is in my hands. If you dare to move again, I'll take her life!" As he spoke, one of the staff members escorting Hu Fang pulled out a dagger and aimed it at her throat.
The Death Apostle shouted angrily, "Fan Wu! When did you become so despicable? You used to just play tricks; now you've resorted to this? If you still consider yourself Yang Master, let that woman go! You can take my life instead!"
Meanwhile, the Void Spirit impatiently interjected, "I don't care about your grudges; I just want to know if I can kill you now."
Hearing this made me fear what extreme actions the Void Spirit might take. I quickly focused my attention on regaining control of my body, but to my dismay, the Void Spirit's power was now too overwhelming for me to suppress with sheer will. The Void Spirit saw through my intentions and said within me, "It's useless; don't waste your effort. Unless I want to, there's no way you can suppress me."
"What do you want then?" I asked anxiously.
The Void Spirit sneered, "I simply can't stand this person before me. Once I kill him, everything will be fine." With that, it raised the sword as if ready to strike.
In that instant, both Fan Wu and I shouted simultaneously, "Don't move!" Fan Wu took two steps back and warned, "Don't act recklessly; I really will kill her!" He gestured to the staff member beside him.
Receiving the signal, the staff member holding the dagger slowly pressed its tip against Hu Fang's throat. At that moment, Hu Fang let out a pained scream and gasped desperately, "Shen... Shen Xu... save me!"
Seeing blood begin to flow from Hu Fang's throat made my heart race with urgency; I wanted nothing more than to rush forward right then. Suddenly, an idea struck me. I turned to the Void Spirit and said urgently, "I have a plan! Let me out now!"
Void Spirit said lightly, "I know what you want to do. You just want to use that brief moment of time when I awaken to save someone..."
"Since you already know, then let me out quickly!" I replied, showing some impatience.
But Void Spirit responded, "What if you don't let me out afterward? I don't intend to trust you. After I kill him, then..." Void Spirit was about to take action.
At that moment, Fan Wu across from us began to provoke Void Spirit repeatedly. "What's wrong? Are you afraid to move? I knew you were a coward. Since that's the case, I'll give you two choices. One, you kill Death Apostle, and I'll release your friend. Two, you kill me, and my subordinates will kill your friend."
However, Void Spirit paid no heed to his so-called choices and simply widened his eyes, speaking in a slightly angry tone, "Oh? Is that so? You're the first person to call me a coward; I must admire your courage..."
As soon as he finished speaking, Void Spirit quickly gathered power into his legs and with a loud bang, launched himself forward, closing the distance to Fan Wu in less than a second.
"Now let's see who the coward really is!" Void Spirit exclaimed as he struck Fan Wu with two swift sword strikes. Before Fan Wu could react, two slender black energy blades extended from his waist and chest, slicing him into three pieces.
The two staff members behind me saw the situation was dire and attempted to kill Hu Fang before fleeing. Unexpectedly, Void Spirit turned around and kicked the one holding a dagger, sending him flying.
The other person saw this and turned to run. "Looks like these two are normal people," Void Spirit thought before saying to me, "Are you satisfied now?"
For a moment, I didn't know how to respond and could only mutter a thank you.
Void Spirit brought Hu Fang over to where Death Apostle and Yao Long were. "It's up to you now." He then turned back to face the dismembered body of Fan Wu and the monster formed from the remains.
"What's this? Is he not dead yet?" I asked. Void Spirit replied, "He is dead, but that thing isn't." Just then, we saw the flesh-and-blood monster extend numerous soul threads from its body, pulling Fan Wu's corpse into itself. At that moment, the monster erupted in alternating blue and red flames that engulfed its surroundings.
"I can't guarantee we can defeat this thing now; it has gathered too much of my power..."
At that moment, the monster's form began to change; it started shrinking as if drawing inward. In an instant, it transformed into an oval-shaped sphere slightly taller than an adult.
"It seems like it's giving birth to something!" I said to Void Spirit.
"I can feel it too." With that, Void Spirit had no intention of waiting any longer. He leaped into the air and thrust his weapon, Jiang Ling, directly into the center of the oval flesh sphere.
In that moment, he exclaimed in alarm, realizing the danger, and attempted to pull out his sword to evade the object. However, no matter how hard he tried, the sword felt as if it were firmly fixed inside, refusing to budge. Around him, slender Soul Threads began to emerge continuously.
Seeing the situation turn dire, the Void Spirit had no choice but to release Jiang Ling from his grasp and leap backward, escaping from the fleshy mass. As I distanced myself from the mass, the flesh surrounding it began to peel away and fall off. A humanoid figure gradually emerged from within the flesh.
"They weren't lying to me; this thing really can grant me a second life! The feeling of rebirth is incredible!" Accompanying his words, the remaining chunks of flesh that had not yet fallen off suddenly scattered apart as if they had exploded.
"How is he alive again?!" I stared in astonishment at Fan Wu, who had completely revived.
"You ask me? Who should I ask? Since he's alive, I'll just kill him again!" The Void Spirit charged forward once more, aiming to reclaim Jiang Ling from Fan Wu's grasp.
As Fan Wu noticed my approach, he remained unfazed and casually tossed Jiang Ling aside. At the same time, a massive amount of Soul Threads erupted from his hands, but this time they were different—moving at incredible speed with an exceptionally high density.
With nowhere to escape and seeing the Soul Threads about to strike me, I heard a swift "whoosh" behind me as a blue-glowing arrow zipped past my side, hitting the center of the swirling Soul Threads. Instantly, azure flames engulfed all the Soul Threads, reducing them to ashes.
Upon witnessing this, the Void Spirit turned around only to see Yao Long collapsed on the ground, seemingly exhausted from unleashing that last arrow.
Yet, the Void Spirit felt no gratitude; he simply remarked flatly, "Nice shot," before rushing toward the fallen Jiang Ling.
Picking up Jiang Ling, the Void Spirit infused power into his sword with one hand while concealing his other hand behind his back, slowly gathering a Black Sphere in his palm. I could sense that this Black Sphere was different from what Li Zhisheng produced; rather than expanding with more power infused into it, this sphere remained small and gradually condensed into a point.
Meanwhile, seeing the blue flames of the burning Soul Threads approaching him, Fan Wu hurriedly severed them. "You can still use such abilities? Looks like I need to kill you first!" he declared as he lunged toward the incapacitated Yao Long.
The Void Spirit, noticing this, shouted at Fan Wu, "Hey! I'm right here; do you want to run away?!" When Fan Wu ignored him completely, the Void Spirit dashed forward and positioned himself in front of him. "The one who wants to kill you is me, not them! For some reason, I just feel compelled to kill anyone associated with Yang Master. Maybe it's because you all are just too annoying!"
With that, the Void Spirit suddenly became fierce and swung his sword upward. Caught off guard, Fan Wu was slightly slow to dodge and felt a large chunk of flesh sliced off his arm by the passing Slash Mark.
Irritated, he summoned forth the azure energy of the Void Spirit, transforming it into a teal sword in his hand. "Since you're so eager to die, I'll oblige!" He swung the sword formed from the essence of the Void Spirit toward me.
At that moment, most of the power had already been gathered in his concealed hand behind him; thus he had no strength left to evade. Just then, an intense burning sensation surged through me. I felt a sharp pain in my chest before being thrown backward.
"Oh, Void God, don’t try to be a hero before fully awakening; if you die, it'll be quite troublesome for me."
Hearing the voice, Death Apostle suddenly looked up, "Gu Kai! How could it be you!"
I struggled to stand up from the ground, and Void Spirit glanced at the person in front of me, "Who are you?"
Before Gu Kai could speak, Fan Wu, frustrated after his attack was blocked by Gu Kai, shouted angrily, "Who are you! Don't ruin my plans!" Suddenly, Fan Wu raised his right hand and struck Gu Kai's chest. In an instant, a crimson Soul Thread pierced through Gu Kai's body, emerging from his back.
Seeing that Fan Wu's hands were immobilized, Void Spirit didn't care about Gu Kai's fate at all. Instead, he unleashed the powerful force he had been gathering in his hands.
A beam of black light, the size of a thumb, shot out from my palm and instantly pierced through both Gu Kai and Fan Wu.
Fan Wu let out a painful howl and staggered backward, nearly collapsing to the ground. At that moment, Void Spirit spoke to me from within my body: "This strike has infused all the remaining power. If he doesn't die now, we might be waiting for our own demise..." I felt my body regain control as Void Spirit's power gradually faded away.
"Gu Kai! What are you doing..." I hadn't finished when I felt something hit my abdomen, but there was no pain. "I just came to help you put on a show! Don't get in the way!" Gu Kai whispered as he pressed close to me.
Then I felt his hand suddenly push against my abdomen with force, sending me flying. He turned to the collapsed Fan Wu behind him and said, "Death Apostle is my prey; don't interfere!"
