Hu Fang and Li Zhisheng turned their heads in surprise to look at me, and I was equally stunned. However, the Psychiatrist seemed unfazed. After asking the girl a few simple questions, he turned to Li Zhisheng's Attending Physician and said, "She is mentally stable; there are no issues."
"That can't be right. Please check her again..." he said, pointing at the girl on the bed.
Upon seeing Li Zhisheng's Attending Physician, the girl displayed the same expression she had when she saw me. Terrified, she exclaimed, "And that doctor! He wants to hurt me too! Don't believe him!"
Li Zhisheng's Attending Physician looked at the wound on his hand, bewildered. "Me?! How could I want to hurt you? You bit me!"
Seeing this, the Psychiatrist also found it strange. He returned to the girl and began speaking softly with her. Their conversation revolved around emotions—family, friendship, love, and similar topics.
After a long discussion, I, Hu Fang, Li Zhisheng, and Li Zhisheng's Attending Physician waited silently nearby.
Once the questioning was over, the doctor stood up and addressed us. "This girl is almost certainly mentally stable, but we cannot rule out issues caused by brain trauma. You should take her to see a neurologist."
With that, the Psychiatrist left helplessly.
Li Zhisheng's Attending Physician said, "Since she has returned to normal now, I will help her treat her wounds..." He then went out to fetch some medical supplies.
At first, the girl resisted fiercely and wouldn't let the doctor touch her. Eventually, he had no choice but to call in an Anesthesiologist to administer a sedative so he could treat her wounds.
After examining her injuries, he sighed heavily. "It looks like there's no saving this arm; the nerves connecting her fingers seem to have been completely bitten off by herself. Amputation is necessary."
At that moment, the girl began to groggily wake up. The doctor looked at her and asked, "What happened to you? Why would you harm yourself like this?"
"I didn't harm myself! It's you! You all want to hurt me!" She tried to struggle again but was bound hand and foot, and with the effects of the sedative still lingering, she was powerless to escape.
"What have you done to me?! I have no grievances with you, why are you treating me like this?!" she screamed desperately.
I walked over and explained, "We didn't hurt you. We were trying to save you. You were hiding in the bathroom, biting your own arm. If we hadn't discovered you in time, you would have likely killed yourself. Those two can testify for us..." I pointed to Hu Fang and Li Zhisheng behind me.
Tears welled up in the girl's eyes as she said incredulously, "No... it can't be. You're lying to me. You must be lying! I don't remember hurting myself; all I remember is you hurting me! You're definitely lying!"
The doctor beside us, realizing that communication with her was futile, leaned in and whispered to me, "Please do me a favor. When she calms down, come to the duty room and let me know. I need to check on her hand."
I nodded in agreement. The doctor patted my shoulder and said, "Thank you..." before turning and leaving.
Seeing the girl's pained expression, I was at a loss for how to explain things to her. I quietly returned to Li Zhisheng's bedside. Just as I pulled up a stool to sit down, Li Zhisheng said, "I want to get some fresh air..."
I immediately understood he wanted to talk about something important. I signaled Hu Fang to come along. Together, we helped Li Zhisheng out of the ward.
The three of us sat on a bench in the corridor. Li Zhisheng got straight to the point: "The state this girl is in makes me doubt the truth of what she said before."
"Did she tell you about her background? That's quite normal considering we barely know her. Even if she has some secrets, it's only human nature. Plus, look at how pitiful she is; it seems she's suffering from some strange illness now. Can't you be a little less suspicious?!" Hu Fang replied to Li Zhisheng.
I waved my hand at Hu Fang: "No, what Li Zhisheng means might be different from what you're thinking. Let him finish." I gestured for Li Zhisheng to continue.
Li Zhisheng ignored Hu Fang's comment and focused on his thoughts: "When she was biting herself, it seemed like she didn't feel any pain. This suggests that it might not have been her acting at that moment but rather something else using her body. Additionally, anyone who got close to her seemed to be viewed as an enemy and attacked. Strangely enough, she wouldn't initiate an attack; it was almost like she was completely lost in her own world when 'acting up.' The doctor getting bitten was likely just a defensive reaction from her."
"But how does this relate to your suspicion? Why doubt her honesty?" I interjected.
Li Zhisheng shook his head: "No, I'm not saying she's lying; rather, her words may not reflect reality. Simply put, I suspect that her mother is not as she described; it should actually be the opposite!"
I was momentarily taken aback. "Wait, you mean... it wasn't this girl's mother who attacked her, but rather her mother was killed by her own bites while trying to save her?"
"Exactly!" Li Zhisheng affirmed. "From her reaction just now, it seems that her memories are the opposite of reality. Moreover, when she 'freaks out,' her thoughts appear to contradict her physical actions. Simply put, she doesn't feel pain when she bites herself; instead, it seems to bring her a sense of comfort, perhaps even some sort of satisfaction. Those who want to help her are perceived as enemies."
"The reason she believes that you and that doctor are trying to harm her after she comes to is likely due to this. In other words, she has entered a certain mental state where her actions are completely opposite to what is actually happening."
After listening to Li Zhisheng's analysis, I finally understood. "Although your explanation lacks concrete evidence, it does seem quite reasonable when considering the current situation. But what exactly caused her to become like this? She has never even been to that town..."
My mind felt like a jumbled mess, unable to grasp the connections involved.
"Right now, this is all I can think of. As for why she suddenly fell ill and whether it has anything to do with that town, we will need to investigate further to find out."
"Yes, I understand that, but my suspicion is that the town might be a kind of Onizuka..."
