Hearing this, Yao Long quickly got out of the driver's seat to check the situation. I sat in the car, using the headlights to look around and realized we were at the foot of a hill, surrounded by a blanket of white snow. The wind was picking up, howling through the air.
"Yao Long, how's the car? Is there any way to fix it?" I asked as I got out and walked over to him.
Yao Long was using his phone for light while inspecting the tires. "It doesn't look good. Three of the tires have been punctured by sharp stones. We can't drive anymore. Even if we change two tires, they would be punctured again in no time. We'll have to call someone to tow the car away. If we want to leave now, we'll have to walk."
After hearing this, I sighed and looked at the heavy snowfall. "In that case, there's no need for us to rush through the night. Let's rest in the car for the night and set off early tomorrow morning." With that, I signaled everyone to return to the vehicle.
We all stayed inside, running the air conditioning while occasionally complaining about the troubles of our trip. Time quickly passed until midnight; Yao Long fell asleep first due to exhaustion. Hu Fang and Li Zhisheng followed suit, leaving only me and Death Apostle trying hard to stay awake.
Sitting in the passenger seat, I pulled out my phone and checked the time—it was nearly midnight. "How am I going to get through this night?" Just then, a bone-chilling cold swept through the car, causing goosebumps to rise on my skin despite the air conditioning.
"What’s going on? Did someone leave a window open?" I muttered under my breath. I began checking the windows but found them tightly closed with no drafts coming in.
Next, I glanced over at Yao Long, who was slumped over the steering wheel, sound asleep. The driver's side window was also securely shut.
As I turned back to check the rear windows, that chilling sensation hit me again. This time, I distinctly felt that it was emanating from within the car and seemed to be coming from those who were asleep.
"What’s happening?" I shivered and was about to turn around when suddenly a hand landed on my shoulder, startling me so much that I jumped. But then I thought it might be Death Apostle who hadn’t fallen asleep yet. "What’s wrong, Dea—" Just as I started to speak, I froze.
The figure before me was not Death Apostle at all; it was clearly an Evil Spirit. Its face was covered in rotting flesh, with one eye hanging loosely beside its dark eye socket. It opened its mouth wide, revealing rows of sharp teeth as it lunged toward me.
Seeing this, without thinking twice, I threw a punch instinctively. However, due to the cramped space in the car, my fist struck Yao Long's seat instead. The force of my blow jolted Yao Long awake.
At that moment, not only Yao Long, but even Hu Fang and Li Zhisheng in the back seat were jolted awake. They slowly raised their heads...
Just then, I was shocked to discover that everyone in the car, except for me, had transformed into hellish Evil Spirits. They lunged at me like madmen. "How could this happen!" I wanted to scream, but for some reason, my throat wouldn't produce any sound.
"At that moment, a thought flashed through my mind: Am I dreaming?" With that thought, I pinched myself hard. The pain shot through my body instantly, yet before me were still four terrifying Evil Spirits, and I did not wake up.
Panic set in as I wanted to open the car door and escape. Just as I turned around, I suddenly noticed that outside the car, the sun was shining brightly. There was no snow on the ground; instead, it was covered with vibrant flowers and grass, looking warm and comfortable.
In stark contrast, inside the car, I felt an unbearable cold, as if I were trapped in a giant refrigerator.
Seeing this scene, I suddenly realized: "The inversion of perception and sensation; everything is the opposite of what I've seen before... Since I'm not dreaming, there can only be one possibility: I've been affected by that cursed town. But we haven't even reached the town yet; why am I being influenced..."
Unable to make sense of it all at that moment, I decided not to dwell on it. Instead, I focused on changing my mindset and tried to enter the state of using the power of Hatred.
However, Void Spirit had not activated; no matter how hard I tried, it was futile. As Hu Fang and Death Apostle transformed into Vengeful Spirits were about to pounce on me, I thought to myself, "If everything is reversed, then these Vengeful Spirits, these evil souls must be Death Apostle and Hu Fang. They definitely won't harm me!"
I struggled to maintain this mindset and suppressed my inner fear...
Moments later, it indeed had an effect. The four grotesque Evil Spirits, even revealing their bones, slowly transformed back into the forms of Yao Long, Death Apostle, Hu Fang, and Li Zhisheng.
At that moment, they looked at me with terrified expressions. "Yao Long asked me, 'What happened to you?!'"
I had completely regained my composure and felt a sharp pain in my hand. Looking down, I saw a large patch of skin torn from my arm, blood gushing out in streams.
"I can't believe this is happening to me. Who are you all...?" I suddenly realized that this was exactly the reaction of that girl from before. It seemed I had truly fallen under the spell of that town...
Thinking about it, I gathered my thoughts and asked them, "Did any of you feel anything unusual?!"
Everyone shook their heads, which left me even more confused. "This is strange. If it really was the influence of that town, then everyone should be affected, right? Why is it just me...?"
Furrowing my brow, I recounted what I had just seen to them in detail. Hu Fang said to me, "Just now, we saw you swinging your fist at the Death Apostle. If it weren't for the chair blocking you, you would have hit him by now... Then, when you realized you missed, you started biting yourself. The wounds on your arm were caused by your own bites..."
Hearing Hu Fang's explanation, I began to understand what had happened. At that moment, Li Zhisheng interjected, "Wait a minute. If I remember correctly, that girl wouldn't recover unless it was a specific time. How did you come back to your senses?"
I thought for a moment and replied, "I just tried to keep myself calm, and gradually I came back to reality. As for why I could recover, I'm not sure... What puzzles me is why it only happened to me while all of you are fine..."
After I finished speaking, everyone fell silent, which struck me as odd. Just then, a terrifying thought crossed my mind: "Could it be that I'm still trapped in that twisted illusion?! Who are these four people in front of me...?"
