I was taken aback. How could it be that I was experiencing another episode when all the doors and windows were securely closed? Was there something wrong, or had the Evil Spirit here grown stronger during this time?
As I pondered this, a chill ran through me. I knew that I might be affected by something, yet the feeling of fear spread uncontrollably within me.
At that moment, Li Zhisheng and the Death Apostle beside me sensed my unease and quickly retreated into the darkness of the room.
I wanted to speak, but my mind slowly lost control. Words hovered on the tip of my tongue, yet no matter how hard I tried, they wouldn’t come out. Just then, I felt the moonlight shining on me becoming warm, radiating an orange glow as if the morning sun were bathing me in its light. It felt exceptionally pleasant; even the cries from outside transformed into laughter.
In that instant, I felt as if I were in a hall, enveloped in happiness and warmth, making me reluctant to escape. "This is an illusion; I can't be deceived. Wake up!" I kept repeating to myself in my mind.
But it was futile. A soft and serene female voice echoed faintly in my head, soothingly telling me, "You are safe now. You can stay here forever; no one can harm you. I will protect you..."
The voice was gentle and sweet, completely overshadowing my original consciousness. "Yes, it’s so beautiful here; why would I want to leave?" I thought as I looked down to see myself sitting at a luxurious dining table adorned with exquisite tableware and tempting dishes.
Before me stood a golden candlestick with a white candle flickering gently in the darkness. Despite its dim light, it was enough for me to see the food laid out before me.
I salivated at the sight of the food and eagerly reached out to take a bite. Suddenly, a skeletal hand shot out from beside me and grasped my wrist tightly.
"What are you doing?" A familiar voice rang in my ear. I turned to see a monstrous figure standing before me, its face unrecognizable.
Instinctively, I tried to push it away, but the creature reacted faster than I could. It snatched Jiang Ling from my hand and used the hilt of the sword to deflect my arm before plunging Jiang Ling into my chest.
In that moment, instead of pain or fear, I felt comfort and happiness wash over me.
However, just moments later, a heavy force surged through my body, and that peaceful sensation vanished in an instant. The monstrous figure before me morphed into Li Zhisheng's likeness.
His hand remained frozen in the moment of plunging the sword into my chest. "Is your willpower really that fragile? You were defeated so easily?"
A long-forgotten voice echoed in my mind, "Void Spirit?! What is happening to me?" I looked at my hands in confusion.
The Void Spirit explained, "It seems that your soul was just tainted by something. It affected your thoughts and perceptions. If it weren't for this person in front of you awakening me to break the influence on your soul, you would have likely turned into a complete lunatic by now."
As the Void Spirit finished speaking, time around me returned to normal. I grasped the sword, Jiang Ling, embedded in my chest and, despite the pain, pulled it out. I looked at the puzzled Li Zhisheng and asked, "What... what just happened to me?"
Li Zhisheng sighed in relief, seeing that I seemed to have returned to normal. "You seemed to have another episode. You were mumbling on the balcony about the sun and some goddess or something. Then you started grabbing your own arm as if you wanted to bite it. If I hadn't stopped you, you would have already chewed off a piece of your own flesh."
Hearing this, I felt a chill run down my spine as I glanced around. There was no lavish feast anywhere; the sunlight streaming through the window was still pale and cold. Moreover, I could feel the mark on my arm growing, seemingly about to extend over my shoulder. So, I quickly took a deep breath and focused on calming my mind.
After a moment, the power of the Void Spirit gradually faded from within me. "Why am I having these episodes when all the doors and windows are tightly shut..." I muttered to myself.
At that moment, Death Apostle slowly emerged from the shadows into the moonlight. He glanced at the bloodstains on my chest and said, "During the last episode, we weren't even in town yet. I think we misunderstood this illness from the very beginning..."
Death Apostle trailed off mid-sentence, prompting me to ask, "What misunderstanding?"
But he didn't respond; his body trembled slightly before he suddenly collapsed onto the ground, murmuring, "What... what is this..." His words became increasingly incoherent, making it impossible for me to catch what he was mumbling.
"What’s going on?! Why is Death Apostle having an episode too?!" Li Zhisheng exclaimed in surprise.
At that moment, Yao Long rushed forward in a panic, trying to help Death Apostle up. But just as he reached out his hand, a flash of insight struck me like lightning, jolting my entire body awake.
"Yao Long! Don't touch him!" I exclaimed, rushing in front of the Death Apostle to block him.
Yao Long was startled by my sudden move and instinctively took a few steps back, quickly raising his bow and aiming it at me. He asked warily, "What are you doing?! Are you really Shen Xu?"
Seeing this, I waved my hand to signal him to lower his bow and said, "I've returned to normal now, don't worry... I stopped you because I suddenly realized that this illness seems to be contagious!"
Before Yao Long could respond, Li Zhisheng and Hu Fang behind us spoke in unison, "Contagious?"
I explained, "That's right, contagious! The only possibility I can think of is that aside from Yao Long, everyone else here has never been to this place. So they couldn't have contracted this Demonic Mark. But I fell ill on my way here, and I think it has something to do with that girl I encountered at the hospital..." I turned back to confirm with Li Zhisheng, "Li Zhisheng, did you come into contact with that girl?"
"You mean you met her?" he replied. "I think I might have. Why? Do you think it's because of contact transmission? But I'm fine..."
"Then my guess must be correct..." My expression turned serious as I pointed at Li Zhisheng. "You were fine before, but now it's different because you've already been infected!"
