"Is he... already dead?!" I muttered regretfully to myself. Just then, the creature beside me, covered in snake heads, let out a series of low moans. The sound resembled a baby's cry but also had a hint of a nightingale's song.
Hearing this, I quickly turned to look at the creature and realized that it was not alive at all, but rather a massive stone statue. Within the statue resided several monstrous snakes, which poked their heads out through the holes in the sculpture, continuously flicking their blood-red tongues.
"What is this Demonic Mark..." I pondered, when suddenly the snake heads protruding from the statue opened their mouths simultaneously, releasing streams of dark green smoke.
Seeing this, I hurriedly pulled Hu Fang back. From a distance, illuminated by the fire burning behind the statue, I noticed that the green smoke transformed into humanoid shapes upon touching the ground, drifting like phantoms and slowly approaching me and Hu Fang.
"Could it be that the shopkeeper was turned into one of these things?!" I murmured to myself, gripping Jiang Ling tightly, ready to summon Void Spirit at any moment.
But just then, a howl from a wolf echoed behind us. I quickly turned around to see the Azure Scaled Beast blocking our way back down. It bared its bloody maw, covered in fresh blood, and kept roaring at me and Hu Fang.
"How did this creature end up here? Could Yao Long and Li Zhisheng already..." I dared not think further and kept reassuring myself, "It must have been a cave-in that separated them from this monster. They must have escaped by now..."
However, Hu Fang lowered her head, her expression grim. "It seems Yao Long and Li Zhisheng are already dead..."
"Don't say that! They definitely..." I stopped mid-sentence as I sensed something unusual about Hu Fang. It felt as if a powerful force was stirring within her.
I wanted to stop her, but it was too late. In an instant, she was enveloped in red flames that gradually morphed into arcs of lightning flickering around her.
"Is this Hu Fang's Hatred?!" In my desperation, I didn't think twice and reached for the talisman to stick it on her. But before I could touch her, she kicked me away with a swift motion.
"Hu Fang! You can't use Void Spirit yet; don't act recklessly!" I shouted as I struggled to get up from the ground. However, the force of her kick was too great; even with Void Spirit protecting me, I was still severely injured. Before I could stand up fully, I spat out a mouthful of blood.
Wiping the blood from my lips and steadying my mind, I looked at Hu Fang again. She was charging towards the Azure Scaled Beast. The beast roared defiantly in response, baring its bloody fangs as it advanced toward Hu Fang.
Seeing this scene, my heart tightened as I thought, "Hu Fang has never experienced any battle; even with a powerful Void Spirit, she might not win!"
As I pondered, just as I expected, Hu Fang rushed forward and swung her fist at the monster's head. However, the Azure Scaled Beast had no intention of engaging her directly; it swiftly dodged Hu Fang's punch and then spun around violently. Its thick tail struck Hu Fang's back, sending her flying.
Before Hu Fang could hit the ground, the Azure Scaled Beast charged after her, opening its massive jaws to bite down. At that moment, I realized I couldn't wait any longer and quickly flipped Jiang Ling, intending to summon the Void Spirit.
But just as the situation became critical, a blue light suddenly flashed from the dark mine and struck the Azure Scaled Beast with a loud bang.
The creature recoiled in pain, taking several steps back, which gave Hu Fang a chance to escape.
"Grandson, your grandpa is still alive!" Yao Long appeared at the mouth of the mine, wielding Azure Spirit. His clothes were tattered, and his face was covered in blood. He spotted me in the distance, crouched on the ground with my hand on my stomach, preparing to stab myself with Jiang Ling. "Shen Xu, are you alright?!"
Seeing that Yao Long was unharmed relieved me somewhat, but I still couldn't see Li Zhisheng. Anxiously, I asked, "I'm fine; what about Li Zhisheng?!"
No sooner had I spoken than a pitch-black spear shot out from the mine and pierced through the Azure Scale Monster's body. "I'm not dead yet!" Li Zhisheng shouted as he wiped blood from his face and stepped out of the mine.
"We'll handle this beast; you deal with what's behind you!" Li Zhisheng said as he conjured a dark spear in his hand and hurled it at the Azure Scaled Beast again.
Upon hearing him mention what was behind me, I immediately felt something was off and hurriedly turned around. To my shock, I saw several figures made of dark green smoke standing behind me. At that moment, they had human faces that were grotesquely twisted and wore eerie smiles directed at me.
This sight sent chills down my spine, but I didn't freeze in place; instead, I scrambled to the side and quickly reversed Jiang Ling, plunging the blade into my chest without hesitation. In an instant, time froze. I pulled Jiang Ling from my chest and sprang back to my feet in one fluid motion.
Taking advantage of the time freeze before it dissipated completely, I gripped Jiang Ling tightly and dashed toward the dark green figures, intending to finish them off. However, just as I reached them and was about to swing my sword, one of the dark green figures grabbed my sword hand tightly.
Suddenly, a chill ran through my heart as I thought, "Wait, how could the time freeze disappear so quickly?!" At that moment, I felt the dark green "being" was absorbing my power by gripping my hand.
The Void Spirit, hearing my confusion, let out a cold laugh and said, "The time freeze has not vanished; these entities are neither ghosts nor souls. They are spirits..."
After hearing this, although I was puzzled, I had no time to ask what it meant by spirits. I summoned all my strength and yanked my arm free from its grasp. Taking a few steps back, I swung my weapon, Jiang Ling, at those so-called spirits, unleashing several Slash Marks.
To my surprise, instead of retreating from the Slash Marks I had unleashed, they leaned forward with eerie smiles on their faces.
Seeing this, a flash of realization struck me. "Wait, I've seen this situation before. Could they also absorb my power?!"
With that thought in mind, before the Slash Marks reached the spirits, I quickly swung my sword again with greater speed to intercept the previous Slash Mark.
Instead of getting angry at this action, the spirits only seemed to grow more delighted, their mouths stretching into wide grins that sent chills down my spine.
