In an instant, the spirits before me were completely absorbed by the Void Spirit. I could clearly feel that the Void Spirit was now entirely different from before; its power had increased significantly. Because of this, the Slash Mark that had been unleashed behind me was no longer a threat.
The Void Spirit controlled my body and squeezed the hand that was blocking the Slash Mark. With a loud crash, the Slash Mark shattered, releasing a cloud of black smoke.
It raised my hands and muttered to itself, "Why can’t I recover even fifty percent of my power? Is it because I haven’t absorbed enough?"
Just as I was about to ask a question, a howl echoed from afar, reminiscent of a wolf's cry. This time, however, the howl was filled with anger and aggression.
"Quick, go help them!" I commanded the Void Spirit.
But the Void Spirit seemed indifferent to my words. It controlled my body and slowly picked up the Jiang Ling that was stuck in the ground. "Do you not trust your friends? They’ll be fine against such things..." As it spoke, I turned to look at the center of this circular area. The tall stone statue I had first seen still stood there, surrounded by numerous snake heads slithering out from the holes around it, hissing as they flicked their tongues.
"Why would someone gather so many Vengeful Spirits here? Even for refining souls, it seems unnecessary to go through such trouble..." The Void Spirit continued, controlling my body as it tightened its grip on the Jiang Ling and hurried towards the statue.
As we approached, I suddenly leaped up onto the top of the statue and raised the Jiang Ling above my head. Using my downward momentum, I swung downwards to create a Slash Mark that cleaved straight down from the top of the statue.
Just as it seemed about to split in two, the Slash Mark suddenly halted, blocked by something. With a thunderous explosion, it shattered the statue into pieces.
Immediately, thick smoke billowed around us, and a strong smell of blood filled the air, as if the snakes inside the statue had been blown apart.
"What is happening? Do you know something?" I asked the Void Spirit amidst the fog.
At that moment, however, the Void Spirit grew cautious. It did not speak but conveyed its thoughts to me: "From what I remember, those spirits can absorb human souls and energy, and they can reflect attacks back at their assailants. Yet they rarely attack humans directly."
"Because their method of attack is merely to absorb souls and energy, and they must deplete their own physical energy in the process of absorption to fully convert the attacks they receive along with the absorbed souls and energy. This poses a certain danger to the spirits themselves, much like my earlier attack."
"If I hadn't attacked first, forcing them to deplete their energy, it would have been difficult for me to absorb them..."
"It's strange, though. Why would anyone deliberately refine such a unique entity? Firstly, spirits do not possess strong offensive capabilities; they are merely vessels for absorption, conversion, and storage of energy. Secondly, unlike ghosts, they cannot exist for long periods; their lifespan is generally only about a year, and controlling them is quite challenging..."
After listening, I sensed that the Void Spirit was gradually becoming tense. I could even feel my hand gripping the sword starting to sweat slightly.
At that moment, a figure began to emerge from the thick smoke. The figure was undoubtedly human in shape, but through the haze, I sensed a hint of danger.
"It seems this thing ahead is no good..." the Void Spirit muttered, placing Jiang Ling in front of it while gripping her tightly with both hands. A semi-transparent black shield formed around us, enveloping me within.
"What's wrong? Is there something you're afraid of?" I mocked the Void Spirit.
However, the Void Spirit ignored me this time and quickly infused power into Jiang Ling. In an instant, a Red Dragon appeared on my arm, and the sword gradually shifted from black to red.
Just as the Void Spirit completed all its preparations and noticed that the shadow in the smoke remained still, I raised my hand and swung my sword down toward that shadow. A pitch-black Slash Mark cleaved through the smoke, flying straight toward the figure.
Just as the Slash Mark was about to hit the figure, it suddenly vanished before our eyes. At that moment, a raspy male voice came from behind us: "When there's a path you refuse to take, hell has no door; you come knocking on your own."
Hearing this, the Void Spirit immediately turned around and swung its sword without hesitation, not intending to give the opponent any chance to breathe. But unexpectedly, the figure moved with incredible speed and dodged even at such close range.
At that moment, the figure had already escaped from the smoke. Thanks to the flickering firelight nearby, I finally got a clear look at him. Although he had a human appearance, his face and exposed skin were covered in festering sores that occasionally oozed an unknown yellow pus, making him look utterly repulsive.
"Looks like you're quite poisoned; the fact that you've survived this long must be thanks to those spirits..." the Void Spirit said with a hint of sarcasm.
The man, his face already a grotesque mess, was impossible to read. I could only hear him rasp, "It's not because I'm poisoned, but because this body is utterly broken... It seems your body is in pretty good shape; why don't you let me use it?"
As he spoke, he gathered a dark green sphere in his hand and hurled it at me. The Void Spirit reacted swiftly, using Jiang Ling to slash through the air twice, creating a cross-shaped Slash Mark that split the dark green Black Sphere into four pieces.
Just as he neutralized the attack, the Void Spirit assumed an offensive stance, ready to strike. But at that moment, the four pieces of the dark green sphere suddenly exploded in mid-air with a loud bang. Instantly, countless drops of foul-smelling Green Liquid poured down towards me.
Seeing this, I was taken aback and panicked. However, the Void Spirit remained calm. He controlled my body, quickly channeling power into my legs and dodging the noxious Green Liquid with incredible speed.
Despite the Void Spirit's quick reflexes and agility, a single drop of the Green Liquid struck the back of my left hand. In that instant, an unbearable sting spread throughout my body, as if my left hand were being corroded away.
I looked down to see that where the liquid had touched my left hand, a hole had begun to form. The Void Spirit, noticing this, quickly drove Jiang Ling into my hand and forcefully pried away the part contaminated by the Green Liquid. The pain was so intense I nearly lost consciousness…
