"Stop playing games and drop your weapon!" The man holding Hu Fang warned me, his knife inching closer to her throat.
I gripped Jiang Ling tightly, ready to summon the Void Spirit at any moment, hoping to use that brief moment of stasis to save Hu Fang. "Alright, alright, don't get agitated. I'm dropping it now..." I glanced at Jiang Ling, the dark blade shimmering with an eerie Black Light under the moon.
Just as I was about to act, a flash of green light flickered in the distance, followed by a beam of green energy the thickness of a fist shooting toward the man holding Hu Fang, piercing through his head in an instant.
Since I was standing on top of a truck, I didn't need to dodge; I watched as the beam shot straight through beneath me, penetrating the truck and a nearby SUV behind it.
In an instant, the man with the shattered skull collapsed into the snow with a thud, sending up a flurry of snowflakes. "Gu Kai?!" I muttered in shock.
Hu Fang was too stunned by the sudden turn of events to speak. She stood frozen in place, as if her soul had left her body, unable to comprehend what had just happened.
At that moment, from the darkness ahead came Gu Kai's voice. He approached me with heavy footsteps crunching on the snow. "Stop dawdling and finish what you need to do before leaving. This isn't a place to linger. There are still plenty of Yang Master’s people back in town. If they see someone missing for too long, they'll definitely send someone out to look for you. That would be real trouble."
He reached the side of the truck, and in the light from its headlights, I saw he was holding a bloody severed head. The face was grotesque and mangled; it belonged to the man who had been hiding in my and Hu Fang's vehicle earlier.
"You... you killed him?!" I stammered, facing Gu Kai who looked like a hellish judge.
Gu Kai wiped some blood off his face. "I originally wanted to avoid getting too involved with Yang Master’s people, but you keep causing trouble for me. If it weren't for..." He suddenly stopped mid-sentence as if he had stumbled upon some crucial clue but was unwilling to share it.
I quickly pressed him, "Because of what?!"
He glanced at me and changed his earlier demeanor, impatiently tossing the severed head onto the roof of the truck. "Why does it matter? Just hurry up and leave. If Yang Master’s pursuers catch up, you both will be dead."
He sheathed the sword that glowed with a green light, and in an instant, a dark green mist enveloped the surroundings, causing him to vanish from my sight.
"Hey..." I felt he seemed to know the truth about everything, so I reached out to stop him, but it was too late. "Who is he? Why is he helping us now? Isn't he our enemy?" Hu Fang asked me, looking bewildered.
Hearing Hu Fang refer to Gu Kai as an enemy made me think, "That's right, back at Meng Zhuang's home, didn't he injure us? He even sent a subordinate disguised as that old woman to try to kill us. Yet now he keeps appearing to help me in times of crisis. He once told me he has his own stance... Given the current situation, Gu Kai definitely cannot be Yang Master’s person, but he isn’t friendly with Li Zhisheng from the Yin Master Family either. In fact, even Li Zhisheng doesn’t seem to know much about him. He is neither Yin Master nor Yang Master, yet he seems to understand the Void Spirit within me perfectly. Could it be...?"
A thought flashed through my mind: "Feng Shui Master? Could he be a Feng Shui Master?! But his style of doing things doesn't seem like that of a Feng Shui Master..." I muttered to myself.
Seeing me lost in thought, Hu Fang shouted from beside the truck, "What are you thinking about?! That strange person just told us to leave quickly! Hurry up!" She seemed a bit anxious.
I snapped back to reality at her voice and nodded in response before raising my sword and striking down at the massive stone tablet on the truck. However, I had forgotten that my body no longer possessed the power of the Void Spirit. With all my strength behind the strike, I heard a loud clang! The Jiang Ling in my hand was knocked back, sending a jolt through my hands and causing blood to flow from where my grip had split open.
Hu Fang sensed something was wrong and quickly moved around to the back of the truck, grabbing onto its edge and peering out. Seeing me clutching my hand while the stone tablet showed no signs of damage, she exclaimed, "Oh no! Are you okay? You can't break this thing? Let me try!"
With that, Hu Fang climbed up from behind the truck and was about to summon her Void Spirit to smash the tablet when I hurriedly stopped her. "Your Void Spirit is unstable right now; I'm afraid you'll lose control again. My own Void Spirit power is running low too, and with the situation regarding my arm's mark, we shouldn't use our powers recklessly."
Hu Fang stomped her foot in frustration. "Then what are we supposed to do? We can't just chip away at such a big stone!"
"I have my methods," I replied as I put Jiang Ling away in my backpack and pulled Hu Fang down from the truck into the driver's cabin.
Sitting in the driver's seat, I turned on the lights and looked around. Seeing that the vehicle hadn’t been damaged by that beam of light earlier, I said, "Good thing it’s still intact. We can raise the cargo compartment at the back of the truck and see if we can topple the stone tablet over and maybe break it..."
After hearing this, Hu Fang looked at me with a skeptical expression. "Do you even know how to drive a truck...?"
I casually replied, "No..." and then started the engine, making a racket in the cabin.
After a moment, I accidentally bumped into something, and the dump truck's rear began to emit a series of mechanical sounds, followed by the slow lifting of the dump.
"I hope this works..." I muttered as I leaned out of the window to look back.
As the dump gradually rose, it collided with the large stone tablet inside, producing a series of loud thuds.
Just as I was listening intently to the sound of the stone tablet, I suddenly felt a chill breeze blow across my exposed neck. This wind was different from the cold air around me; it felt as if something was standing beside me, blowing a cool breath against my neck.
Suddenly, I shivered violently and instinctively tried to pull my head back into the cabin. But before I could do so, a cold hand grasped my neck, forcefully slamming my head against the door, leaving me unable to move.
In that dazed moment, I caught sight of countless red soul threads writhing from the sleeve of that hand, inching closer and closer to my face...
