After listening, I politely said, "We're just here to pay our respects. Could you tell us what happened up there?"
The old man looked us over and scoffed lightly, saying, "Paying respects? I don't think so. You don't have any offerings or wreaths, not even a stick of incense. What kind of grave visit is this? I advise you to leave quickly; there's been a death up there, and you don't want to get involved in any trouble."
Upon hearing this, I felt a chill run down my spine. I thought to myself, "Why would there be a death at the cemetery? Could there be something hidden here?" With that in mind, I asked the old man, "Sir, could you please tell us exactly what happened up there?" I pulled out two hundred yuan from my pocket and smiled as I handed it to him.
Seeing the money, the old man quickly glanced around before accepting it. He cleared his throat and spoke in a softer tone, "Since you are so sincere, I'll tell you. You see, I'm a worker here. Last night I was on duty, and everything was normal until something strange happened..."
He looked around cautiously again and pulled me and Li Zhisheng aside, speaking in a mysterious tone. "You might not believe me, but I really saw a ghost last night..."
Hearing this made me secretly delighted. "This is like finding something after searching everywhere; we came here to look for ghosts and stumbled upon one so easily."
I decided not to interrupt him and let him continue. The old man cleared his throat again and went on, "Last night, just like usual, I was patrolling the cemetery. Just as I was about to head home after finishing my rounds, I suddenly heard a woman's voice behind me. It was such a sorrowful sound, crying uncontrollably—it really tugged at my heartstrings."
His vivid description almost brought tears to his own eyes. Seeing this, Li Zhisheng and I exchanged glances; I whispered in disbelief, "Could it really be that dramatic?"
Li Zhisheng also showed signs of impatience on his face and urged the old man, "You've taken the money; just get to the point!"
The old man hurriedly replied, "Alright, alright! Don't interrupt me; I'm getting to the main part. When I saw that woman, I thought she was there to pay her respects too. I wanted to comfort her from behind, but just as I approached her... guess what I saw!"
At this point, even I couldn't hold back anymore and snapped impatiently, "What are you waiting for? Just tell us already!" Li Zhisheng shook his head helplessly and added, "Did you see a ghost?"
The old man snorted and said, "It's not that easy for you to guess! When I saw that woman crying like a river, it was strange because there was no tombstone in front of her—she was kneeling on an empty patch of ground and crying non-stop. No matter what I said to her, she ignored me completely. But just as I was leaving, she called out to me: 'Old man, could you do me a favor...'"
At this point, the old man couldn't help but shiver slightly, as if recalling the girl's words, feeling a chill run down his spine.
He straightened himself and continued, "At that time, I thought she was lost and wanted me to take her out. I didn't think much of it and agreed. But who would have thought that one sentence from her would send me into a cold sweat? She said, 'I'm so hungry, can I eat you?!' When she said that, her whole face contorted, and her voice sounded like those zombies in the movies—terrifying."
"What happened next?!" I pressed on.
"Well, luckily for me, I had the guts to just run. I dashed all the way out of the Amusement Park, and that's how I managed to shake off that Demonic Mark..."
Hearing this, a doubt suddenly arose in my mind as I scrutinized the frail old man before me. Judging by his appearance, he looked to be at least sixty or seventy years old. There was no way he could have run; I even felt he would struggle to catch his breath after just a few quick steps. However, I didn’t interrupt him and continued to listen.
"After that, I didn't dare come back here all night. It wasn't until this morning when I returned that I found the police had cordoned off that area above, which was exactly where I saw the girl last night. So, I advise you all to leave quickly and not linger here; you might attract some bad luck." With that, he waved us off and turned to leave.
Seeing this, I grabbed him firmly. "Wait a minute, old man. Since you were already on guard when you came up here, how did you know someone had died inside?"
The old man paused for a moment, his expression shifting slightly before returning to its original form. He forced a smile and said insincerely, "You’re too curious for your own good, buddy. That's not good... Actually, I've only heard about it from others at the Amusement Park; they were the ones who called the police... Alright now, you all should hurry along. I've got work to do; if I'm caught loitering around, they'll dock my pay."
After hearing his explanation, I felt it was best not to press further. I could only silently watch him shuffle away with unsteady steps. At that moment, I noticed that one of his legs seemed injured; he walked with a noticeable limp.
I pulled Li Zhisheng aside onto the main road and said to him, "Don't you think that old man is a bit strange?"
Li Zhisheng nodded. "Not just a bit strange; I think most of his story is fabricated. From how he described things and how he spoke about himself in the story, it all seemed off."
"I noticed that too..." I replied. "First of all, he's always making us guess or hesitating in his words. It looks like he's searching for an opportunity to concoct a lie for himself. Plus, he ran all the way down from the Amusement Park..." As I spoke, I looked up at the stairs stretching upward and continued, "Just look at those stairs—do you think an elderly person could run straight down from up there? If it were me at night trying to come down from there, I'd be worried about tripping over myself! And what's more, that old man's leg is injured..."
Li Zhisheng listened to my analysis and said, "You really observe closely; I didn't even notice there was something wrong with his leg. However, since someone has died here, it's very likely that there's something supernatural involved. I believe this matter is definitely connected to that old man. Let's follow him and see what he's up to."
After hearing this, I nodded and stealthily followed the direction the old man had gone…
