"How did you realize you were cursed? Did you notice any unusual changes in your body, or was it something you discovered by accident?" I asked.
Yao Long pondered for a moment and replied, "This is a long story. Since you want to know, I'll share what I remember..." With that, Yao Long began recounting his past experiences.
At that time, I received a mission from Mr. Death, instructing me to search for a long-missing Yin Master. I was following leads that brought me to the Jiangnan region. There, based on the information I had gathered, I arrived at a secluded valley.
It was late autumn, and the leaves on the mountain had already turned yellow. A thick layer of fallen leaves covered the ground, making it difficult for me to detect the hidden dangers beneath. Moreover, I was young and reckless, completely unaware of the risks involved.
In such circumstances, I fell into an ambush set by the Yin Master and was surrounded by several of his followers. After a fierce battle, I managed to escape from them, but I was gravely injured. Coupled with hunger and cold, I soon lost consciousness and collapsed on the desolate mountain.
When I regained consciousness, I found myself in a small village with only about ten households. The woman who saved me belonged to a Barbarian Family; she appeared to be in her forties and had a teenage girl by her side.
Upon seeing me awake, she prepared some herbal medicine for me to take. Without thinking much of it, believing I had encountered a kind-hearted person, I drank the concoction she offered. To this day, I still remember how incredibly bitter that herbal medicine was, as if it were made from a pile of insect innards.
But as the saying goes, "Bitter medicine is good for the disease." After taking the medicine, my injuries began to heal rapidly.
Seeing that my condition had improved, I intended to thank her before leaving. However, the woman was nowhere to be found. I thought to myself, "It would be rather impolite to leave without saying goodbye after she saved my life."
So, I decided to wait for her return so that I could express my gratitude before departing. But after waiting for three days without seeing her or her child reappear, I began to worry about their well-being. Concerned that something might have happened to them, I ventured out to inquire with the villagers in hopes of finding any news about them.
Since I had been recuperating indoors during my recovery period and hadn't stepped outside until then, it struck me that the village seemed to consist entirely of women; even the children were girls—there wasn't a single man in sight. Furthermore, during my inquiries, I noticed that many of them bore strange marks on their faces or arms as if they were infected with some virus; their skin appeared unnaturally dark and unsettling.
Aside from that peculiar detail, they seemed like ordinary villagers without anything particularly unusual about them. Despite my efforts to gather information about the woman who saved me, none of the residents seemed to recognize her family at all; whenever I mentioned them, they shook their heads repeatedly.
I felt a twinge of unease in my heart, but with the mission at hand, I couldn’t afford to linger any longer. So, I decided to leave a note, hoping to return someday to express my gratitude.
Afterward, I returned to the woman’s house. As I sat in the dimly lit room, preparing to write my note, I suddenly sensed an unusual presence behind me. I quickly turned around, and what I saw would haunt me for the rest of my life.
There stood the woman at the door, holding her child who appeared to be around ten years old. At that moment, her eyes were devoid of pupils; instead, two centipedes crawled in and out of her hollow eye sockets. The child in her arms was lifeless, covered in various poisonous insects that made my stomach churn.
Seeing this, I instinctively wanted to attack her, but before I could act, she suddenly appeared right in front of me with a speed that took me by surprise. Before I could defend myself, she roared and knocked me unconscious in an instant.
After that, everything went black. When I finally regained consciousness, I found the woman sitting calmly beside me while I lay on her bed.
Startled, I sat up abruptly and looked at her warily. “Who are you? What have you done to me?” I quickly checked my body but found nothing unusual.
Noticing my tension, the woman said, “You’re fine; you just had a nightmare. You fainted in the mountains while I was gathering herbs and happened upon you. Now you’re all better.” She smiled kindly as if everything that had happened was merely a figment of my imagination.
But I clearly remembered waking up earlier and even asking the villagers about her. Yet with her words, it felt as if I had truly just experienced a bad dream. Still on guard, I pressed on, “What about your child? You mentioned having a child around ten years old…”
The woman replied, “What child? I’ve never been married… Wasn’t it just a nightmare you had? Now that you’re better, let me take you back…”
With that, she handed me my luggage. I quickly checked my backpack and found everything intact; it didn’t seem like she was after my belongings.
Since I couldn’t find any evidence to prove that I had indeed been there, I prepared to thank her and leave.
Just as I was about to go, she shared some techniques with me to help guard against bandits in the mountains. At that time, filled with youthful arrogance and confidence in my own abilities, I intended to refuse her advice. However, when she saw my reluctance, she used a strange form of sorcery that rendered my body completely immobile and out of control.
She saw me lying on the ground and smiled at me, saying, "Young man, this mountain is not peaceful. You should learn some skills to protect yourself. There are many people like me in these mountains; be careful not to let them take your life."
Seeing this, I had no choice but to accept her kindness. After that, I left the village without giving it much thought and continued with my mission.
Sighing, Yao Long expressed some regret. He said, "It was only later, during another bath, that I accidentally discovered the curse on my body. At that moment, I felt utterly hopeless... After inquiring from various sources, I learned that this was indeed a type of Gu Technique from the Miao Family..."
