"What are these people doing?! Why are there human bones? Are they involved in some kind of murderous scheme?!" I couldn't help but exclaim as I looked at the pile of bones carelessly discarded in the corner.
Yao Long leaned down to examine the bones closely and said, "Could it be that they used some kind of Gu Technique to kill people and then used the corpses for refining?"
Just as he finished speaking, we heard a creaking sound from behind us as the door opened, and the light from outside cast a shadow of a figure at our feet.
From the shadow on the ground, I noticed that the person standing at the doorway was holding a rectangular object that resembled a knife.
Seeing this, Yao Long quickly stood up and drew his Azure Spirit without hesitation, aiming it at the door. His reaction was swift; he completed this series of movements in a very short time, even before I had a chance to turn around.
"Who is it?!" Yao Long questioned warily.
I turned to look and saw a frail man standing at the entrance. Due to the numerous candles outside, the light was much brighter than the flickering flame in my hand, making it impossible for me to see his face in silhouette. However, the gleaming knife he held was particularly eye-catching, with red liquid dripping from its blade.
Noticing Yao Long's readiness for action, the man hurriedly raised his hands and explained in a flustered manner, "You... you mustn't misunderstand, it's... it's me..." Realizing he was stammering, I knew he must be the same man who had brought us here earlier.
"Don't act rashly," I whispered to Yao Long, gently pressing down his raised hands. Then I smiled at the man at the door and asked, "What's wrong? Is there something you need?"
I intentionally emphasized my tone to test him.
"I... I..." He was about to explain when the woman who had helped Yao Long earlier stepped out from beside him. She interrupted him, saying, "If you can't get your words out, let me help you..."
She smiled at us and continued, "I had him cut some pork earlier because I thought you must be hungry since you hadn't eaten anything. The dish is just ready; I wanted to call you..."
Her expression froze halfway through her sentence as her eyes fixated on the pile of exposed white bones behind me and Yao Long. "You’ve found out?" Her demeanor shifted immediately, and her voice turned serious.
I thought to myself, "This is bad; something is going to happen. They might want to kill us to silence us..." With that thought in mind, I slowly pulled out Jiang Ling from my backpack and demanded, "Who are you people?! What’s going on with these bones?!"
Upon hearing my question, the woman slightly curled her lips into a sinister smile. She looked at the frail man beside her and softly commanded, "Kill them."
She suddenly pushed the frail man inside and slammed the door shut with a loud bang.
In this cramped room of just over ten square meters, the candlelight in my hand flickered wildly in the darkness, casting eerie shadows on the faces of the three of us. "It seems we've fallen into a trap once again..." I thought, ready to stab Jiang Ling into my chest and engage in a desperate struggle with the frail man before me.
Seeing this, Yao Long stopped me, calmly saying, "Don't rush; it's not time for you to act yet..."
Before he could finish, the frail man's body suddenly began to swell, followed by a series of tearing sounds as his clothes ripped apart.
Hearing this, I quickly raised the candle in my left hand to see what he was doing.
As the candlelight rose higher, a burly man appeared before me. His clothes had been completely torn apart by his expanding body, and black, hair-like protrusions were sprouting from his skin, writhing across his surface.
"This man has also been cursed; it looks like he's heavily poisoned. Look at those centipede legs growing around him..." Yao Long said as he tightened his grip on Azure Spirit.
Only then did I realize that what was sprouting from his body wasn't hair at all but countless centipede legs covering him entirely like a living suit of black armor.
Seeing Yao Long preparing to attack, the man opened his mouth wide, revealing insect-like pincers as he lunged at Yao Long. "Hmph, just what I wanted..." Yao Long muttered softly. Instantly, a brilliant blue flame enveloped his bow, and then an arrow formed from coagulated blood shot forth, carrying blue fire toward the monster.
The creature attempted to dodge but had no time to react at such close range; it was pierced through the head by the arrow and fell lifelessly to the ground.
"Quick, let's get out of here!" Yao Long urged as he leaped forward and stomped down on the corpse's head with a powerful kick, crushing it. Yellow pus oozed out, and some poisonous insects crawled out from within.
Hearing this, I dared not hesitate and hurriedly followed Yao Long toward the door. He reached the door without stopping and kicked it with force, shattering the decayed wood. Without looking back, he charged outside while I closely followed him.
However, we never expected that as soon as we stepped outside, we would be blocked by several burly men. They stood at the entrance with their arms crossed, their bodies sprouting insect-like appendages.
Seeing this, I hurriedly stopped in my tracks, my heart racing. "What kind of cruelty is this Gu Technique? It turns a living person into such a state, no different from the abominable biochemical experiments that the world despises!"
As I pondered, I noticed Yao Long standing fearless ahead. Before the burly men could act, he steadied himself and shot several arrows, taking them down one by one.
At the moment he released the arrows, I caught a glimpse of his arm; the original wound seemed to have cracked open again due to the exertion, blood slowly dripping down from his arm.
"Can you still hold on?!" I asked Yao Long anxiously.
"I'm... I'm okay..." he gritted his teeth, forcing himself to endure. From his expression, it was clear that he was suffering immense pain.
"Let's not fight anymore; we need to find a way to escape this village..." I urged, pulling Yao Long to run. Just as we lifted our feet, a woman's voice suddenly called out from behind us, "Wait!" Instinctively, I turned around and saw the woman from earlier standing behind us. Her expression had changed from before; now she looked troubled. "Can you take me with you?"
Both Yao Long and I were taken aback for a moment. Then she continued, "Actually, I've been waiting... waiting for people like you to appear..."
